School was out in Chicago on Monday and parents scrambled for child care after public school teachers staged the first strike in a quarter century over reforms sought by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and endorsed by President Barack Obama's administration.
Some 29,000 teachers and support staff in the nation's third largest school district were involved, leaving parents of 350,000 students between kindergarten and high school age to find alternative supervision.

Ugh ... If I were unable to read English, I might assume that was a picture of “Dykes on Bikes” protesting something ...
The parents “scramble” now but then they’ll scramble to the polls to vote in the same politicians who support the teachers’ unions and give them this power in November. They have only themselves to blame for this nonsense.
“Whermah gonna put mah babies!?”
Yep—that’s exactly what I’m thinking. Sometimes it’s so inconvenient to take them with you to the welfare office or bar.
I predict a big increase in “Knock Out” games.
Well, smaller class sizes IS part of what they are asking for, yes?
Rahm should pull a “Ronald Reagan” and FIRE all the striking teachers, offer to hire some thousand of unemployed recent college graduates, provide relocation assistance (as part of the $400 M the school turned down) and offer the “New Teachers” 6 months of a housing stipend until they can get settled.
THEN see how many of these former teachers can get a job. I mean they only turned down a 16% raise.
You cannot tell me that there are not people willing to work for the previous salary!
You are correct about the Chicago teacher strike. Obama will “become involved” in the negotiations and save the day for thousands of children and parents. As a side benefit, Rahm will look good because he could use his connections in DC to “the one” who will be the savior and peacemaker of the Chicago public school crisis.
The Teachers Union will benefit as well by appearing to bend and accept a little less because it is after all “for the children.”
They do not trust Rahm nor 0bama.They want to be paid in advance
to work for re-election.
Bingo! Now is perhaps the last feasible time for them to seek and get payback from (though I would argue they’re thinking of their previous efforts—ok, such as it was— in arrears, rather than any going-forward type of commitment to) Barry.

Yeah. I think this is their last chance in the near future to grab what they can.
Politically, we benefit, because parents like their free babysitting, and the typical union claims of being underpaid don’t garner sympathy, these days.
Being a corn-fed govt hack is no way to go through life.
I may have been laid off twice under the regime, but at least I can sleep at night.
-— In other words, in Chicago the public schools probably employ close to one support staff for every teacher ——
I used to head a school choice advocacy group, so I have a lot of stats rattling around,in my head.
One memorable stat: The number of administrators in the Washington D.C. govt schools is 100 times greater than in the D.C. parochial schools (measured per pupil).
And get this. The average cost per pupil in most cities is $15-20k per year.
If I gave you $400k to educate 20 kids next year, do you think you could outperform these hard working teachers?
Having been a teacher many years ago, albeit for a very short period of time, I have not doubt about my ability to “outperform.”
