In 1841,
Frederic Chopin turned out another polonaise, and this is one of his masterpieces. Its very difficult to play in that the fingering is very close together, and at one point there are three themes going at once, all of which have to be articulated clearly. The end is one of his very best wind-downs.

This is a video of a remote collaboration/production which contains musicians from Miami, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada, London, Ontario, Canada and various cities in Cuba. It is named, "La Salsa Es De Cuba" or "The Salsa Is From Cuba". Cubans claim that the Salsa is from Cuba. Puerto Ricans claim that the Salsa originated in Puerto Rico. Colombians claim that the Salsa is Colombian. I say that while the roots of the Salsa are in Cuba, it originated in New York. :-)
There are also various scenes from present-day Cuba.
If you don't dance to this Salsa or at least if this Salsa doesn't make you want to dance then you are a lost cause. Forget it! :-)
Warning to AZamericonnie: Batten down the hatches, secure everything on deck and prepare for severe hurricane winds and tsunami-like conditions! ( Don't break anything! )

One of the least played pieces of
Frederic Chopin is this orphaned prelude from 1841, separate from the set of 24 he had written earlier. What makes it different is that it points the way to Wagner, with Chopin changing key constantly and writing very long lines. Its rarely recorded or played. One pianist who champions this work is Adam Neiman, and it was a post-concert conversation about this piece that brought us together as friends. (Also our mutual interest in Ayn Rand.) We both love it, and Adam did a beautiful job.
The trickiest part is the cadenza at the end. My teacher said it should sound like a gentle rain on a tin roof. Under my fingers it sounded more like a herd of elephants. Adam advised me to play it very slowly and softly, and not try for speed.
This is a great piece.

This piece from 1841 is one of the best known and most beloved of the piano pieces of
Frederic Chopin and tops the list of Chopin favorites. Its in ternary format, with the opening and closing in A-flat and the middle section in F Major.
I saw Anton Nel, who teaches at the University of Texas at Austin, play this at a fund raising party for the Seattle Chamber Music Society a few years ago. At the transition between the two sections, Anton kept the pedal depressed on the octave Cs, thus carrying the A-flat Major harmonic underlay into the F Major section. There was just one problem: Thats not how the score reads. There is a clear pedal break there. I accosted him afterward during champagne and hors doeuvres and asked him about that.
Well, he said sheepishly, you caught me doing something very naughty. But you know why I did it, of course.
Yes. C is the common note in the A-flat Major triad and the F Major triad, I responded with my usual annoying erudition. It makes perfect sense, and I like the way it sounds. But that opens up a bigger question. Are the pedal markings in a Chopin score from the composer or some editor who thought he was being helpful? Can you trust the pedal markings?
Anton laughed. You cant even trust the notes in a Chopin score! Even in the urtext, there are misprints all over the place.
I went home afterward, pulled out the piece, played the transition the way Anton played it and marked up my score with the new pedal marking.
