Thanks. My grandparents had a 56 very similar to the one in that photo on the farm in S. Texas. I loved that wagon.

Thanks for the Nelly Furtado 'Like a bird'. I had not heard that version before. You're right. It's beautiful.

Tino Rossi's song Tristesse (sadness), which is based on Chopin's "Étude #3 (opus 10)," was a hit in Europe in 1939. The lyrics describe waking up from a dream about a departed lover.

In the late summer of 1950, Jo Stafford used the same tune for her smash hit No Other Love.

The last major work of Frederic Chopin for 1842 was this final scherzo, one of my personal favorites because it’s the only scherzo I could play well. It’s thoughtful, which is a bit unusual for Chopin in a scherzo, where he prefers to go for the bravura.

The passage at 2:26 reminds me of a gentle rain shower. The “trio” section that begins at 3:50, a barcarolle, states the theme at first without any supporting harmony, and then Chopin layers on more harmonies as he repeats it. The end is one of his best.

Chopin: Scherzo #4 in E, Op. 54

Around 3:17 and following — yep from the video that’s clearly wrist action, not forearm action that Horowitz is using on those circular L.H. octave passages.

Last week I posted the Etude in B minor from the Opus 25 set, and that one is similar. It’s the octaves from hell.

I’ve tried it enough to realize it might take weeks to get it up to speed. God bless concert pianists who have that kind of patience.

The year 1843, when Frederic Chopin turned 33, was the last of his glory years. The first of this set of two nocturnes is one of his better pieces.

Chopin: Nocturne in F minor, Op. 55/1

The second has a bittersweet feel to it.

Chopin: Nocturne in E-flat, Op. 55/2
