Reuters poll: No bounce yet for Obama

Not sure how useful this is but I subjected you to an eeyorish "no bounce yet" post about Romney during the convention so I owe you a tentative high-five. Mitt ended up with the most modest possible bump after the GOP shindig ended; maybe this new poll is a sign that O won't fare any better.

Major, major caveat: The poll was conducted (via online interview) from September 2 through today, which means the sample contains lots of people who hadn't yet heard Michelle Obama or, especially, Bill Clinton speak. As I say, not that useful, but worth flagging as a marker for the more robust polls that'll trickle out tomorrow and Saturday.

The latest daily tracking poll found Republican Mitt Romney still clinging to a narrow lead of 45 percent to Obama's 44 percent among likely voters. Romney had led by 46 percent to 44 percent in Wednesday's poll.

“We’re not seeing a sort of glimmer, at this point, of a bump,” said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark…

“I do think we probably will see a small bump still. Maybe we won’t start seeing it until Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I think it will be very modest,” Clark said…

For Romney, Thursday’s poll was good news. He is holding steady so far despite rampant criticism of him at the convention.

Even if he gets an immediate bounce, remember that Romney’s about to unleash the heavy attack-ad artillery tomorrow. He could have done it earlier this week, but why waste money on ads before O speaks when there’s a chance they’ll be instantly forgotten if he performs well tonight? Better to let him have his moment in Charlotte and then unload to try to instantly neutralize his momentum. And what happens if O gets a surprisingly big bounce and the Romney fusillade fails to dent it? Well, then we’re going to an all-eeyore-all-the-time format here at HA, baby. Prepare yourselves. Gray skies at the ol’ blog homestead until September at least.

Here’s O admitting to an NBC affiliate that he made a terrible mistake with his “you didn’t build that” line — in his choice of syntax, not the underlying sentiment. Poor messaging is, now and forever, the only sin Democrats will happily confess to. Right, Nicholas Kristof?

"Mitt ended up with the most modest possible bump after the GOP shindig ended;..."

Really? Accoeding to Rasmussen, Romney was down 2 at the beginning of Tampa, and up 3-4 after. Historically, a 5.5-point bounce is pretty impressive.

A knee-jerk reaction to financial news put Obama over the top in 2008; American voters are both shallow and ignorant.

I really don’t get the concept of the “bounce”.

In the past, it's been about getting people involved who have not been involved and changing minds of those who were on the fence and even of some who had been in opposition.

That isn't working this time because no one is watching. I understand last night (Wednesday) they had only about 10 million watch on all channels combined. They probably had a ton of drop-outs, too, since Clinton droned on nearly until midnight.

So, the old idea that the conventions are when people suddenly get involved is no longer true. "Conventional" wisdom has changed.

It will probably be the debates that get people involved this time around.

And, of course, there are the sitcoms, talk shows, latenight, comedy centrals, SNLs, even sports commentators, etc., that are all campaign ads for the liberal -- Obama -- throughout the election season.

The liberals believe they can take down anyone if they put on a full-court media press.

I believe that has become their strategy.

My solution?

At least some of the challenger's ads are going to have to make people laugh out loud when they view them. (And they have to be laughing at Obama or some foolishness related to Obama.)

I saw a disturbing article that Romney and his SuperPac have completely pulled out of Pennsylvania and Michigan. If they’re giving up those two, the path to victory is narrow indeed.

[ Is the American voter so shallow that they will suddenly decide to vote for Obama after Michelle’s and Bill’s speeches? ]

Yes.

Overwhelmingly, yes.

"This is dumb, its way to early to tell. Obama WILL get a substantial bounce, because the media will make it so. What really matters is how that bounce fades."

Well, if the media can see Obama gets a big bounce then why can't they also keep it from fading?

Since nobody watched the rat convention (been there, seen that before) the “bounce” won’t come until the Democrat newsrooms are done spinning Ubama’s speech as the greatest oratory since Lewinsky. I mean Clinton.

A few videos like this have convinced me that the intellectual depth of the average dimmicrat voter can only be measured with the aid of nanotechnology. Does one micron sound about right? Seriously these people are as unacquainted with reality as it is possible to be and still remain above room temperature. Those who have a two digit IQ are ignorant, ill informed and goofy. Those who have a triple digit IQ are worse!

Agreed.
The "vagina monologues" probably didn't even help him with womyn.
