Not sure how useful this is but I subjected you to an eeyorish "no bounce yet" post about Romney during the convention so I owe you a tentative high-five. Mitt ended up with the most modest possible bump after the GOP shindig ended; maybe this new poll is a sign that O won't fare any better.
Major, major caveat: The poll was conducted (via online interview) from September 2 through today, which means the sample contains lots of people who hadn't yet heard Michelle Obama or, especially, Bill Clinton speak. As I say, not that useful, but worth flagging as a marker for the more robust polls that'll trickle out tomorrow and Saturday.
The latest daily tracking poll found Republican Mitt Romney still clinging to a narrow lead of 45 percent to Obama's 44 percent among likely voters. Romney had led by 46 percent to 44 percent in Wednesday's poll.
“We’re not seeing a sort of glimmer, at this point, of a bump,” said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark…
“I do think we probably will see a small bump still. Maybe we won’t start seeing it until Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I think it will be very modest,” Clark said…
For Romney, Thursday’s poll was good news. He is holding steady so far despite rampant criticism of him at the convention.
Even if he gets an immediate bounce, remember that Romney’s about to unleash the heavy attack-ad artillery tomorrow. He could have done it earlier this week, but why waste money on ads before O speaks when there’s a chance they’ll be instantly forgotten if he performs well tonight? Better to let him have his moment in Charlotte and then unload to try to instantly neutralize his momentum. And what happens if O gets a surprisingly big bounce and the Romney fusillade fails to dent it? Well, then we’re going to an all-eeyore-all-the-time format here at HA, baby. Prepare yourselves. Gray skies at the ol’ blog homestead until September at least.
Here’s O admitting to an NBC affiliate that he made a terrible mistake with his “you didn’t build that” line — in his choice of syntax, not the underlying sentiment. Poor messaging is, now and forever, the only sin Democrats will happily confess to. Right, Nicholas Kristof?
BTW, folks, I really don’t get the concept of the “bounce”.
Is the American voter so shallow that they will suddenly decide to vote for Obama after Michelle’s and Bill’s speeches?
“Crap don’t bounce!” - Apologies to Robert Duvall.
i dropped some crap on the ground once.
it doesn’t bounce.
blessings, bobo
In this election, I think most voters have made up their minds. Obama’s entire presidency has been one big campaign. You either like the guy, or you don’t.
Jimmy Carter got a bounce, a large one if I recall correctly. He still lost in a landslide.
Dick Morris was saying that this has to be a completely negative convention, because Obama has nothing new at all to offer, no solutions even proposed. The only other all negative convention in modern times was the Pubs in 1992, when he was Clinton’s pollser, and the Bush41 got no bounce at all, also the only time in modern times that happened.
“Jimmy Carter got a bounce, a large one if I recall correctly. He still lost in a landslide.”
The debates against Reagan turned that one around. I also expect Mitt’s numbers to go higher after the debates as well.
No way!!! The Michelle “Black Racist/America Hater” Obama & the William Jefferson Clinton speeches are already forgotten. and...the POTUS Obama speech will be forgotten, the second he concludes delivering it!!! Shucks, the NY Giants & Dallas Cowboys football game last night wiped out the TV audience for the Clinton farce speech!!!
Well said. Even the so-called independents have independently made up their minds.
The speech excerpts don’t sound too great so hope that means no bounce for Obama, though he does lay out some ideas.....but nothing new we haven’t heard anymore.
Didn’t Kerry’s numbers drop by a point or two after the convention?
Oh yeah, don't forget to take the Wookie, Wookies’ Mom, with ya. Heck for that matter, take the ILLeagal Auntie Zututie and the ILLeagal drunk Uncle ObangYouAsYOUgo.
Tonight, at the DNC freak fest, a ILLegal crybaby from TX will speak about how 0pansy gave him the ‘dream’.
Some folks here my not like Romney and often talk about not voting......well, not voting for Romney this year, you are by default, voting for 0pansy.
Vote Romney/Ryan in NOV to save our Republic.
My guess is that bounces revolve around the 10% of the electorate that is either socially liberal and economically conservative or economically liberal and socially conservative. RINO's and DINO's changing who they support depending how on much compromise they can take on either social or economic issues.
[ Is the American voter so shallow that they will suddenly decide to vote for Obama after Michelles and Bills speeches? ]
Yes.
Romney will be starting up the add buys right after the convention, which is a great idea.
It’s hilarious to watch the Libs squirm. There’s no bounce because... shock!.... the DNC sucks. I hear these commentators gushing over Clinton and Michelle, saying this is the “best convention ever” “there has never been so much energy”, but even Dems I talk to say they aren’t impressed with the losers they walked out onto the stage on nights 1 and 2. A lib told me today, “Why the hell did they get Warren to speak! After that Indian crap, I wouldn’t have touched her with a ten foot pole. It’s like they want to lose”.
He tried to jump but fell off the cliff. lol
