Thursday night at the Democratic convention, President Barack Obama could continue relentlessly assaulting Gov. Mitt Romney, put the best face on his own record, or offer a substantive vision for the future. But no matter what themes he emphasizes, we know his acceptance speech will target groups that propelled him to victory in 2008 and remain critical to his re-election, especially Hispanics, women and young people.
The good news for Mr. Obama is that he has maintained his 2008 margin among Hispanics. The bad news is that less than half (42%) of Hispanic respondents said they were "very interested" in November's election, according to an Aug. 20 NBC/WSJ/Telemundo poll.
The news is worse among women. Despite a summer of Democratic attacks on the GOP for waging a "war on women," the president's "unfavorable impression" rating among women is up 11 points since April to 50% unfavorable/46% favorable in this week's ABC/Washington Post poll.
This has depressed his overall favorable/unfavorable rating to 46%/49%, only slightly better than Mr. Romney's 43%/48%. The percentage of women with a "favorable impression" of Mr. Romney is up eight points since April.
Then there are voters ages 18 to 29, among Mr. Obama's most important supporters in 2008. The roughly 23.7 million "millennials" who voted in 2008 were 18% of the electorate, up 2.9 million voters over the previous presidential race. They gave Mr. Obama 66% to Sen. John McCain's 32%, according to exit polls. This margin of roughly eight million votes was a major chunk of Mr. Obama's overall edge of 9.6 million.
But youthful enthusiasm for Mr. Obama has waned. In October 2008, 78% of voters 18-29 told Gallup they would definitely vote that year. Now it's 58%.

It is amazing how the Presidency ages people. carter aged 25 years in 4, right before our eyes. clinton, same deal. Both Bushes also aged quickly.
The only one in memorable history who wore the Presidential mantle like he was born to it was Ronaldus Magnus.
"Look here you youngin's, I've got another $10K to add to your burden this year and for the foreseeable future.
You're my adoring tax slaves."
People are tired of looking at and hearing the President speak but they are not of joking about him.
BTTT!
Were only legal hispanics polled? Most of these polls on “hispanics” are nonsense because there are so many illegals and they get included even though they can’t vote in our elections.
When the Toon was elected she was a reasonably attractive woman.
Now she's a pant-suited cankly moon-faced cow. Men age, but women age faster, unfortunately.
>>He’s a tired old Black guy with a failed record.
A wilted Saladin about to get tossed.
Just think, the America of the 1770's produced and educated a 33-year-old Author of America's Declaration of Independence!!
That document was said by Jefferson to be "an expression of the American mind" of 1776.
Oh, for some articulate and outspoken young man or woman today who can capture the ideas and philosophy of individual liberty in a manner which will excite current generations to defend liberty against those whose regressive "progressive" ideas are destroying our Republic.
Abraham Lincoln praised the principles and philosophy young Jefferson was able to incorporate into that remarkable and world-changing document in these words:
". . . it is no child's play to save the principles of Jefferson from total overthrow in this nation . . . . The Principles of Jefferson are the definitions and axioms of free society. . . . And yet, they are denied, and evaded, with no small show of success. . . . All honor to Jefferson - to the man who, in the concrete pressure of a struggle for national independence by a single people, had the coolness, forecast, and capacity to introduce into a . . . revolutionary document, an abstract truth, applicable to all men and all times, and so to embalm it there, that today, and in all coming days, it shall be a rebuke and a stumbling-block to the very harbingers [initiators of threatening change] of reappearing tyranny and oppression." - Abraham Lincoln, as quoted on P. 75, "Our Ageless Constitution."
The indoctrinated youth of this country gave us Obama. He’s the child of the radicals we’ve let teach our kids all these years. 8/9.6 million is 83.33% of his margin. The other 1.6 million were lost purely to McCain’s utter incompetence as a Presidential campaign. McCain lost like a man looking to lose.
Unless Romney figures out a way to incentivise states to go with educational vouchers we will never, ever get our Republic back.
Many speak of vouchers for school choice.
How about we take another long march through the institutions of this nation and purge the communists from our midst. Make them the pariah they used to be.
We should retake control of the schools. Expurgate these radicals, eliminate diversity and multiculturalism and all of that non-sense. Return the schools to the primary function of education in producing responsible citizens.
But the Fountain of Stupid is Still Overflowing
I agree with you: and the youth (products of esteem training and the like) would wilt at the first hint of any substance in their lives.
It's time to counterattack the left on all fronts, and to saw off the branch.
Cheers!
He got his aging out of the way first. Remember his quip about celebrating the 38th anniversary of his 39th birthday?
Besides, he went into the office knowing what he was there for, and it wasn't looking out for Number One, as is the usual case. He went to serve.
That’s hard to do. Ideas are the way to destroy them. Stop teaching bad ideas, don’t accept the basic premises of liberalism - that you cannot trust people with their own lives, that central planning works, that we need elites running our lives, etc.
Purge the idea and you kill it off for a long time. Keep in mind that this bad idea is the bad idea instituted well before earth life. Satan loves the idea and it’s his world.
