First Lady Michelle Obama’s pitch to voters last night relied on the premise that she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet. She spoke movingly about their early years--about how a young Barack Obama drove a car that was “rusted out" and found his furniture “in a dumpster,” how they both came from families that had to “scrape by.” Her fairy tale--however well-delivered--was one great, big, colorful lie.
Both Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama began their adult lives with a leg up on the rest of America. They attended elite schools: Michelle went to Whitney Young, the public magnet school for Chicago’s upper class, while Barack attended Punahou, the private prep school for the top stratum of Hawaiian society. They were accepted to Ivy League schools despite undistinguished credentials, and both attended Harvard Law School.

Your body work comment caused me to reflect upon the personal
responsibility aspect of maintenance. We drive our vehicles into the ground and try to keep up with all the beginning rust outs by sanding, Bondo-ing, priming and painting. Up here in the Northern Tier, where they use salt on the roads, this is vital and worth at least 1-2 more years per vehicle. Without rust, even a car w/200k miles or more will get $1000 from a personal sale.

BTW, what jobs did Michelle hold while in HS and college? I worked at something or other from the age of 15. Had both a meal job and an off campus cashier gig while in school. Did my own linen laundry to avoid paying extra for it. Everyone in my dorm except the richest kids had some sort of job or self-employment gig going for spending money. Everyone worked in the summer.

Aw crap, I never knew she went there, now I have something in
common with that cow. I wouldn’t really say it’s for the “upper class”, since the upper class send their kids to private schools. Whitney Young is for kids who get good grades and test well, it’s got nothing to do with class, since there is no tuition.
It’s not strictly merit based though, since when I went there, there were plenty of dunces who apparently got in because their sister or cousin had attended.
Well... it was an odd wedding, of an odd couple.

She was actually head of the trust/escrow department. She not only managed the banks money but probably became 0 legal guardian as the result of her own father’s estate (He was no more a bookkeeper then the other ancestor was a goat herder)

I still think that is a lie, since Michelle and Barry attended Harvard at the same time he did, and they both moved in the same relatively small circle of black radicals, being mentored by the same black radical law professors, who helped them both get a job at the same law firm. To think that they never met before Obama came to Sidley & Austin, while he was giving speeches supporting the same professors that Michelle was holding sit ins to support, is just too much of a stretch.
Reminds me of the ‘how far we walked to school’ stories from decades ago. The older the tellers got, the further the distance.
I remember walking 20 miles in the snow uphill to get to school and walking 20 miles in the snow uphill to get home before dark to do the chores: milk the cows, hay the calves, chop wood for the stove, slop the hogs, feed the dogs, kick the cats, etc......

Nope, nothing to do with personal responsibility: I wouldn’t have done body work on the car if the nanny-state regulations in PA hadn’t forced me to. (Time priority — studies before auto-body work, and the car wasn’t really worth keeping up.) If the Obamas had gone to Penn Law instead of Harvard Law, they wouldn’t have driven a rusted-out car either: it wouldn’t have passed PA inspection back in those days.

I really can’t say, I don’t know if they made the standards public or not. I just remember when we were taking the admission test, certain students were just blowing it off, and talking about how they were going to get in anyway, because their cousin, or brother went there. Sure enough, some of those students were there on the first day of classes.
I think the deal was that they gave preference to people with family who had attended, as a backdoor way of increasing the minority presence at the school, without explicitly making the admissions race-based. After all, if 70% of the students are black, then most of their family members who would get preferential admission would be black too.
