Komen controversy drags down San Francisco breast cancer walk participation

SAN FRANCISCO -- The last time Alice Heiman participated in the Susan G. Komen walk in San Francisco to raise money for breast cancer, she gathered a group of friends and made a big trip from her home in Reno to support a cause close to her heart.

This year, though, nine months after the national organization sparked outrage when it refused to fund Planned Parenthood, she's ignoring donation requests that keep popping up in her inbox and has no plans for a return trip.

She's not alone. Just days before Sunday's 5k Race for the Cure along the Embarcadero in San Francisco, registration is down about 50 percent from last year. Donations to the local chapter are down as well, nearly 65 percent, to $76,000 so far this year compared with $212,000 at this time last year.

And that's despite the fact that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure's San Francisco-Bay Area affiliate denounced within a day the controversial move in January by the Dallas-based headquarters to stop funding Planned Parenthood. The national board had cited a new rule that excludes funding groups under federal investigation. Planned Parenthood, which provides abortion services along with breast cancer screenings and other care, was the subject of an investigation launched by a Florida congressman who opposes abortion. Within days, however, the national organization reversed its decision after public outcry, fueled by social media postings that went viral.

Of course Planned Parenthood doesn’t care what happens to Komen. They got Komen to back down, and that was the important thing.

Komen ate PP crow and they still are getting dissed by the abortion lovers. What’s a mother to do.

Komen might as well walk away from PP again and say that they mean it this time. Appeasing bullies like this is stupid.

I think the thing people forget about is komen pissed off both groups who saw it as politically pandering both ways, so now they are loosing on both sides of this.

I like to think its the other way around. Lots of pro life folks found out that Komen was financing mass murder on an industrial scale and are withholding their money and support. Leave it to the legacy media to spin thIngs their way.

This column is bizarre. Komen donations are down because the organization supports Planned parenthood.

While not much of the Komen budget went to PP, it was definitely the principle in either case. In a saner world, Komen would have stood pat about not donating more to PP until PP could certify to Komen’s satisfaction that the funds were going only to mammograms (or any other anti breast cancer service that PP might add in the future). And Komen would have made it quite clear that it would accept only such conditions from PP and would not be bullied. This is the fly that makes the Komen ointment stink.

It would seem not that difficult to investigate.

Komen really ought to pull itself out of PP until and unless PP can guarantee the funds will only go to mammograms and the like. I know about “freeing up money” of general donations for the abortion side of their business, but that would be a minimum acceptable beginning.

It is not JUST financing Mass Murder which is really bad-—but, they are an organization fighting “breast cancer” that is funding abortions which are directly LINKED to CAUSING breast cancer.

How stupid and bizarre and evil.

But money is fungible. Any funds Komen provided PP for cancer screenings would have freed other monies for the murder mills.

They made a principled decision, then reneged.

That reversal will continue to hurt them--especially since there is research which shows an apparent link between artificially terminated pregnancy and breast cancer.

Yep, and that’s something PP really likes to dance around. Letting a woman get in a hormonal condition as in mid pregnancy then poof, removing the unborn baby, is an unnatural condition. Had she gone all the way to delivering the baby, she would be in less risk for contracting breast cancer. PP really seems to have no heart — if you ask PP about adoption it would be as if you spoke to them in Greek.

Yes, there is the fungibility issue. But darn it, if I buy those yogurts with the Komen caps, I at least want to know I didn’t donate directly to abortions. Now THAT would stink.

My wife’s a breast cancer survivor. We don’t give Komen a penny.

(Emphasis added)

What a strange article. Perhaps I am misinterpreting, but Author Julia Sulek's thesis here seems to be that people stopped donating to Komen because they were upset with its temporary suspension of support for Planned Parenthood. Did Sulek consider the possibility that former Komen donors did not realize that they were funding abortions until the controversy made that clear?

I think the "despite" in the quote above should be "because of."

These organizations really do *hate* women-—they want to inject their bodies with all these cancer-causing toxins to prevent natural processes so men can use them like toilet paper and never commit-—and they have the nerve to call themselves “pro-woman” .

People who control the language, control the appropriate “thoughts”. We need to start doing what the Pro-Life movement did-—and take back the language and quite using sugary words to cover the EVIL of such organizations.

PP is a woman hating organization which is trying to make women hate their biological offspring and actually get them to kill their own genetic offspring.
It is really evil. They also are for flooding the body with toxins which causes cancer and who-knows-what-else. Such evil organizations are IN the public schools also brainwashing boys and girls into the culture of death.

Contraception seems like such a tame thing next to abortion nowadays.

But anything that cheapens sex to the point that marriage itself doesn’t matter to the sex, is a baleful influence. If a woman asks a doctor for the Pill today, the doctor gets in dutch if he wants to know if the woman is single.

These people are so blind - they’re aware of the backlash from the pro-abortion crowd but it doesn’t even occur to them how incensed the pro-life people are, and that they’ve completely stopped their donations to that organization.
