"Reverend" Sun Myung Moon was crowned "Messiah" on March 13, 2004 in the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, DC.

Attending the Messiah Crowning ceremony were seventy-one people, including two senators, congressmen, dozens of ambassadors to the United States, and various other figures from the religious and political establishments of the nation and world.

And now he’ll meet God - and it won’t be him.

Well, that's one "self-professed Messiah" down.

One more to go.

Can't stop "hearing" this classic by the Imperials

http://www.smartlyrics.com/Song700495-The-Imperials-Oh-Buddha-lyrics.aspx

Well, Old Buddha was a man and I'm sure that he meant well
But I pray for his disciples lest they wind up in hell
And I'm sure that old Mohammed thought he knew the way
But it won't be Hare Krishna we stand before on The Judgment Day.

No, it won't be old Buddha that's sitting on the throne
And it won't be old Mohammed that's calling us Home
And it won't be Hare Krishna that plays that trumpet tune
And we're going to see The Son not Reverend Moon!

a powerful voice in the American conservative movement ...

What complete bullshit. Preying on peoples' ignorance, claiming to be a messiah, and using it to amass a vast fortune of investments are not "conservative values".

He's been ill ever since Neil Armstrong stepped on him.

The thing I’ll remember most about him is his follower Moonies asking for donations and handing out flowers in airports back in the 70s.

In all fairness, I will defend Moon solely on the grounds that he was not only a strident anti-communist, but put his money where his mouth was for decades and became and major pain in their rear end.

He was a big supporter of the Taiwan based World League for Freedom and Democracy, and CAUSA International (”Confederation of the Associations for the Unification of the Societies of the Americas”), and did a lot to get both evangelical and fundamentalist Christians working in an organized manner against communism throughout the Americas as well. He quietly countered a lot of the radical Catholic “liberation theology” in South America as well.

Even the North Koreans respected his clout, knowing that he could even reach to Pyongyang if they ticked him off.

Yes, Christians were well advised to keep a suspicious eye on him, because he did have an awful lot of wacky going on, but he was a big supporter of conservative Republicans in the US, and did much to give all religions influence in the UN, steering it away from communist oriented atheism.

All told, the immense good he did behind the scenes makes up for a lot of the weirdness.
