Tampa 2012: In remarks to a chair as vacant as the one in the Oval Office, a Hollywood icon reminds us that the president is a failed employee of the people and it's time to let him go.
As performance shtick, it may not have come off perfectly. But judging from the reaction from those "left of Lenin," as 82-year-old Hollywood legend described it during a sort of surprise appearance at the Republican National Convention Thursday, it skewered our absentee president perfectly.
"Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic," tweeted "left of Lenin" film critic Roger Ebert as Eastwood ad-libbed Thursday night to an audience of millions and one empty chair. "He didn't need to do this to himself. It's unworthy of him."
Eastwood's point, though delivered haltingly, was that President Obama is unworthy of the great nation he disparages and apologizes for incessantly, and that our failed employee should be given his walking papers.
Ebert and others miss the point that it is what Obama has done to us that is sad and pathetic.

The audience obviously loved Clint and his message.
Tactically excellent, strategically stupid. GOP efforts should be directed at “Democrat policies” in general, of which Barack Obama is an epitome. The goal here is not just the presidency but the first conservative government since Calvin Coolidge’s day.
“Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic,” tweeted Roger Ebert”
This coming from an epic, hate-filled dickwad.
I’ll stick with Clint, thank you.

Obviously, Ebert is being critical of Clint’s age. Does Ebert deserves equal discriminator treatment?
equal discriminatory treatment
” “left of Lenin””
I gotta remember that one : )
Clint was excellent! His delivery was in the halting style of Jimmy Stewart. Excellent acting. I laughed and teared up at the same time.
"Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic,"
"Cher, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic,"
"Ellen Barkin, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic,"
That Roger Ebert, he's so evenhanded!
Nyuk! Nyuk! DNC heads exploding all around.....messy, messy, messy.
Eastwood saved the day . Rubio and Miit were also excellent .
The political class doesn’t seem to appreciate Eastwood’s bit, but I have a feeling it might have resonated far more than anything else the convention might have offered. Eastwood does have an iconic status in the culture, and he undoubtedly broke through to the heartland, using unforgiving Alinsky tactics on the Kenyan. Political operatives sometimes live too much in their tunnel-vision world of calculated speeches and focus groups and polls, and just are sometimes oblivious to cutting through the fog.
The local Fox affiliate barely mentioned the convention and then only halfway through the show, only to make Eastwood look insane.
Empty suit ping
Dirty Harry still looks pretty good for 82 years old....
He said what we’ve been wanting someone to say for years.
Clint nailed it, which is why the leftist media is attacking him. Rachel maddow really disgraced herself. For someone who thinks being a snotty smart-ass is a sign of intelligence, she showed a total lack of humor.
Indeed, laughter reduces Obama more than any specific criticism could.
The second thing this did was gig Obama---who is notoriously thin-skinned---and this will force him into campaign errors. You can argue it already has: Obama changed HIS schedule to now try and follow Romney to LA.
Oh, and third, do you remember what just a week ago consumed the media and blogosphere? Akin, Akin, Akin. Where is Mr. Akin now? Nobody cares. He's dropped off the media map as they attack Eastwood. But Eastwood's image is enduring . . . the empty chair. I just think it was a home run in every aspect.
