Men, Who Needs Them? (New York Times Editorial)
New York Times ^ | August 24, 2012 | GREG HAMPIKIAN

Posted on 08/29/2012 11:23:17 AM PDT by nickcarraway

MAMMALS are named after their defining characteristic, the glands capable of sustaining a life for years after birth — glands that are functional only in the female. And yet while the term “mammal” is based on an objective analysis of shared traits, the genus name for human beings, Homo, reflects an 18th-century masculine bias in science.

That bias, however, is becoming harder to sustain, as men become less relevant to both reproduction and parenting. Women aren’t just becoming men’s equals. It’s increasingly clear that “mankind” itself is a gross misnomer: an uninterrupted, intimate and essential maternal connection defines our species.

The central behaviors of mammals revolve around how we bear and raise our young, and humans are the parenting champions of the class. In the United States, for nearly 20 percent of our life span we are considered the legal responsibility of our parents.

With expanding reproductive choices, we can expect to see more women choose to reproduce without men entirely. Fortunately, the data for children raised by only females is encouraging. As the Princeton sociologist Sara S. McLanahan has shown, poverty is what hurts children, not the number or gender of parents.

That’s good, since women are both necessary and sufficient for reproduction, and men are neither. From the production of the first cell (egg) to the development of the fetus and the birth and breast-feeding of the child, fathers can be absent. They can be at work, at home, in prison or at war, living or dead.

and see the male students. most are pansys who probably never had a fight ion their life and probably can;t even change a lightbulb, wear spanex, a helmet etc.

I think all of you are really pushing this metrosexual thing a little too far. i.e "generalizing". Most young guys today my age are not pussies or pansies.

I guess I would be a metrosexual in your eyes....

Spandex..I wear it when I road bike..go for a 100 mile "Century ride" and your inner thighs will look like it went through a belt sander/cheese grinder if you don't.

Helmet? Same thing. I had a nasty accident some years back several broken bones etc and the helmet definitely did it's job.

Change a lightbulb? I grew up on a farm and rebuilt/repaired farm equipment/mucked out cow s**t all the time.

Fights? A few over the years

And horror or horrors...I use a woman's hair conditioner (Garnier)....Have to. Take two showers every day (work out 2-2.5 hours at the gym every night with my gf) and we work out hard-weights and cardio. Come home drenched in sweat and have to take a shower or else the sheets get funky after 2 days. Use the conditioner because my hair gets really dried out due to washing my hair 2 times per day..don't want to use it but it is a necessity.

Do some other stuff you would laugh at (but don't prance or preen LOL) but my girlfriend could tell you I am not a pansy or a fairy...

I know guys who work on utility line crews and many if not most are now using moisturizers on their faces before going out to work because they don't want to look like the older guys before them who at age 45-50 faces are so grizzled and wrinkled from the sun. These guys are far from being metrosexual but don't want to look like a 95 year old man at age 45.

Times are changing and what men and women today are doing that is outside what you may have grown up with is not all bad.

More gibberish from crackhead land.

70% of the people in our prisons come from single-mother homes.

Amazingly enough, I’ve spent more time changing diapers, doing laundry, cooking, cleaning, holding, rocking, and cuddling with my daughters than my wife has. She’ll admit it, too.

Honestly? I think it’s silly. I love football but I don’t want to see a female player. I don’t understand why women/girls seem to think they HAVE to do everything a man does to feel “equal.” They can’t. I’ve never felt inferior to men in my life because I understand that different doesn’t mean somehow “less than.”

I googled this young lady and it seems manc’s opinion is borne out. They’re taking “special precautions” so she won’t get hurt. The game will inevitably suffer, but that’s OK, because she wants to play.

“There’s also the risk of injury.

After debating whether to let her join the team, her parents relented after speaking with Gatewood, who promised he would take precautions to keep DiMeglio as safe as possible.

The team runs plays out of special formations and limits the amount of time the ball is in her hands.”

She fears as well as I do that our daughter will never have the chance to marry a proper man.

The vast majority of men AND women today are decent and marriagable.

24/7 mass media makes it appear everyone is a slut/pervert/deviant for ratings and that is not the case. Lot of great people out there...more good than bad.

"If you and her were together I could imagine my misses really talking non stop to you about this. LOL"

Oh, I bet we could really get into it over a cup of coffee, LOL. But don't despair for your girl, there really are good masculine men out there still.

LOL. Never said I use moisturizer(and I don't) but I know many utility linemen that do because they don't want to look like this at age 45 and want to keep up their appearance for their wives...

If I’m not mistaken, I think some parents did try to sue because their girl got hurt playing football.

It’s either give her special treatment, or she’s going to end up with half the bones in her body broken.
