David Sartin.......The 49-year-old's only scrape with the law had been a single traffic ticket - until he visited a "dream marriage" website that boasted the "hottest Russian brides."
Now he finds himself sitting in a jail cell, waiting to be sentenced after pleading guilty last week in Beaumont to attempted kidnapping and brandishing a firearm in connection with a bizarre murder-for-hire plot involving a Ukrainian blonde half his age.
The scheme involved abduction, lead poisoning and a fortified room that Sartin added onto his home where he allegedly planned to imprison his would-be wife.
Before his life spun out of control, the small-framed man was living thriftily. His only income came from a disability check following two surgeries on his back which he injured while installing loading dock equipment, relatives said.
Then three years ago, Sartin clicked on a website that described itself as the spot to meet "beautiful Russian women and sexy Ukrainian brides to be." It said it was designed for those seeking true love with "Western men."
......He also tells of spending thousands more taking her on lavish trips across Europe, giving her funds for living and school expenses and paying for photo shoots and record productions to jump start her singing career (clips of her singing were posted on YouTube).
The money apparently came from about $400,000 he gained from a divorce settlement in 2006. His ex-wife, Betty Sartin, who was married to him for 11 years, said she had to split her retirement fund with him that she'd accumulated while working at Mobil. "I was 13 years older than him, and he played me for a fool. Now he's met somebody a little smarter than him," she said....

Who hasnt wanted to get a mail order bride and keep her in a fortified room for a couple of weeks?
The poor man - a victim of evil women, as they all are, one way or another.
The mark.
What could possibly go wrong?
that was an interesting movie.
It’s been a few years since I’ve talked w a co-worker who was smitten with some Brazilian beauty.
The set up was obvious to all but him.
Ive heard these stories before about eastern block women fronting for gangs and such, taking advantage of lonely American men.
On the other hand I work with a guy who did this and is married to a russian and they have a beautiful baby, so go figure.
Laz?
Just have to ask, have you ever considered adding a fortified room to your place for ‘secure undisclosed hittin’ that thing’?
;)
Admittedly, I did not read the entire piece, but I am struck by the tone of the writer. She seems to be implying that he was a model citizen until the evil website sucked him in and forced him to do bad things against his will.
poor man, my foot. The guy is a fool and a murderous fool at that...
$400K and living in a trailer!
What a maroon.
I’m sure his ex wife is laughing her a— off!
THere is nothing quite like seeing someone get what they deserve when they have behaved badly.
All women are evil ?
I know someone who married a drop-dead gorgeous woman from the Ukraine. He said he met her on a plane. hmmm... They’re still married and have at least one baby. Oh, and they have an extended family that moved here and he is supporting. LOL
Proverbs 5:18
Nobody reads instruction manuals anymore.
The men are either butt ugly, their personality sucks or they want an "yes" women who is subserviant to them or a combination of all 3 above.
Saw a show on this lst year on TLC. One guy was butt ugly/obese in his late 60's trying to woo a gorgeous, very early 20's Russian woman. Poor woman was desperate to leave Russia..the look of disgust on her face when she was with him was telling.
The guy was convinced she loved him. What man would even want to have such a woman like this under these conditions when she is so far out of his league?
That’s not their only scam. Eastern bloc (Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Albanian) gangs have been planting or bribing individuals working for maid services in the Chicago area in order to access homes and steal valuables. In Chicago and other parts of the country, they were involved in mortgage scams that cost victims (new home buyers or recently-arrived immigrants) and banks billions.
