You people are unbelievable! 9:OO AM on a Friday morning on one of the busiest streets in the world. Someone informs you that they just saw a man shoot someone around the corner. You approach, hesitantly, and the man turns on you with a gun. You’re initial reaction is to take cover and shoot to stop, but you don’t have time to take cover. You discharge 9 shots, your partner, 7, in about 1.2 seconds. You kill a murderer and bystanders are injured by ricochets off massive concrete planters that are there to prevent terrorist from driving truckloads of explosives into the entrance of the EMPIRE STATE BUILDING.

This is not the movies. Any of you ever been in that situation? I didn’t think so. As a retired member of the FINEST Police Department in the world, the NYPD, I’d like to inform you that the overwhelming majority of you would crap your pants in that situation. These officers, normally assigned to the 42nd Precinct in the South Bronx, have seen more and dealt with more than the average American would see if they lived 10 lifetimes. Did it go perfectly? No shootout is a textbook situation, but check the score; dead perp, no dead officers, no one seriously injured, in a possibly disastrous incident, in front of an entrance that sees over 10,000 people pass it every hour. Sit back in your comfy chair and dream that you could do a better job.

Yessir. I visit NYC on an occasional basis. I cannot see how a police officer in that situation could guarantee no harm to bystanders whatsoever.

Clearly the factual mistakes you make in your post given the luxury of watching the video and other photos, as often as you wish, discredits your position and judgement.

It is a good thing that you are no longer on the force.

If you are any indication of how NYPD trains, it explains a lot.

Doesn’t matter if they see more than many people in 10 lifetimes as you put it. These guys are touted to be professionals and blah blah blah. The point is, they are there in a position of public trust, armed, for the safety of the citizens. They failed miserably.

First off, NY has the stupidest requirement in the world for duty weapons. A 10 pound trigger? Really? What moron came up with that stupid idea? Heavier trigger = less accuracy.

Second... If NY was 2nd Amendment Friendly, the citizens would have been able to put the shooter down and most likely with much lower risk of incidental damage. Why? non LEO’s don’t have the blanket protection that LEO’s on duty have. Thus, they are more likely to look past their target and to the consequenses of what their shots may bring.

Third.. For most cops, carrying a gun is part of the job. To many, it’s a cumbersome tool that they have to rely on. They barely pass qualifications and they don’t spend nearly as much time on the range let alone going the extra mile to become proficient in stress situations. For concealed carry persons, it’s a choice to do so. Most people I know that CC are MUCH more proficient than their LE counterparts. Why? Because it’s not part of the job, it has much more meaning for us.

For the last point, I want to comment on this comment from you... “ As a retired member of the FINEST Police Department in the world, the NYPD, I’d like to inform you that the overwhelming majority of you would crap your pants in that situation. These officers, normally assigned to the 42nd Precinct in the South Bronx, have seen more and dealt with more than the average American would see if they lived 10 lifetimes.”

If these guys have seen more than the average American in 10 lifetimes, why haven’t they put that experience to use and learned from it? You say it was a good shoot. I say it was damned lucky. Those bullets didn’t ricochet. That was piss poor training and accuracy.

Oh, and NYPD ceased being the finest police department in the world decades ago. Nothing against the individual officers, but their leadership has been corrupted by political BS agendas that have put all the officers and the public at risk. As an example, I once again bring up the 10 pound “NY trigger” on the Glocks used by NYPD. This was put in place because of accidents. That is a very bad sign when you rely on a mechanical disadvantage to compensate for a lack of training. Again, this is on the leadership, not the officers on the beat. NYPD needs to do at least 2 weeks of stressed based training every six months. They won’t do it. Why? Again, politics. The money goes to supporting welfare leeches and other social programs that are bankrupting that city. This shooting is a direct consequence of that poor decision.

My recommendation to the officers of the NYPD... if you want to be the finest PD in the world again? Introduce stress based training on a frequent interval, even if it’s extra curricular in nature and let your leadership know that politics do NOT belong in law enforcement. As it stands now, you guys have a huge uphill battle.

You failed to mention the three innocent citizens who got shot directly. THat means they could have killed 3 innocents while killing 1 perp.

Why is it so easy for you to blow off the shooting off the bystanders?

The community here is telling you that police need to do better. It may be difficult. If the current officers can’t handle the difficulty, we need to train them or remove them and get some who can handle it. That’s what happens in other professions.

Don’t tell me it can’t be done when it is being done by our soldiers.

And the NYPD is not the finest police department in the world. That’s utter non-sense.

What is stupid is your post.

“You discharge 9 shots.”

What the hell for?
You cant place one shot from 8 feet away?

If I were mayor the first thing I would do is require
monthly range qualification.

Rule number 1.
DO NOT shoot the bystanders.

I was USMC mid 60s - trained for ten weeks at Parris Island, two weeks of infantry school, then three weeks of artillery school,
Spent the next three months in a mortar battery field training everyday, and then two more weeks of specialized training before Vietnam.
Got to Vietnam and it was like - holy $hit, training sure wasn't like this!
Alas, the keyboard commandos on FR will always have all the answers despite the fact they've never gone in harm's way for 1 millisecond of their lives.
Thank you for many years of service to the NYPD.

Sigh.

The cop bashing was starting to feel like 16 plus nine bullets.

People do not get how crowded with pedestrians Manhattan is.

You sir, are a bonehead. You don’t know d!ck about what anyone here has done, but your typical cop attitude, like so many snot-nosed teenagers, is that we “just don’t understand.”

The absolute LAST person in this entire country, that should be pontificating on the skills and practice of shooting a firearm, is someone from New York.

BTW, take out an eight hundred pound alligator with a .22, and then you can tell us about situations that would make you crap your pants.

Idiot.

I’m with you.

Most people have watched too many TV and movie shootouts and don’t understand the reality of armed confrontation.

Thank you. Been trying to say this, from the video, several times to various tv amateur G-Men. The Bronx gave them a better reaction time and instincts.

FINEST police force in the world, my ass. Lived in NYC for 15 years and the NYPD officers I saw daily were idiotic donut munchers. Enjoy your pension.

Eat $#!+ and die, you moron. Many of the folks on this forum have put more rounds downrange (often on the two-way range) than a city cop fires in his entire career.

What an arrogant and contemptuous prick. Here are just two examples of courageous armed citizens - senior citizens in this case - that put lie to your statement.

I agree a bad situation.

One question. If this happened in Baghdad, what type of charges would be filed for the soldiers that fired?

Yet, that was the best they could do. Injure a bunch of innocents. So much for the “FINEST”, or does FINEST mean,

Yep - Amadou Diallo would agree.

Nope tootsie roll, not that exact situation, and I bet you haven't either. OTO a lot of the older generation have been under fire in situations that would cause you and your fellow JBTs to crap THEIR pants - where the enemy is actually shooting back.

NOW all of your bullsh!t aside what do you suppose would have happened if a couple of armed citizens did exactly the same thing as these two did. Honest answer if you're capable of it.
