(CNN) The Republican mayor of San Diego has announced plans to air an ad advocating for same-sex marriage rights during next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa.
The spot, titled "Family and Freedom," comes after the Republican Party developed its official plank on gay marriage, which pushes for a federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex couples from marriage. The platform is expected to be officially confirmed at the convention next week.
The Human Rights Campaign and Freedom to Marry said they will run the spot from Monday through Thursday next week in a $30,000 television ad buy in the Tampa area market.
In the ad, Mayor Jerry Sanders speaks directly to the camera encouraging Republicans to support his stance on marriage equality while touting his conservative view of limited government.

Wow - this guy is as big a Republican as Arlen Sphincter was. He should be kicked to the curb.
Sanders is part of Bloomberg’s anti RKBA effort.
He’s the one who should be asked to resigned.
Why should he.
Gay marriage was invented AND
installed by Mr. RomneyCARE who also installed
the first death panels and socialized medicine.
This will be a tribute to the Romney Agenda.
Way to play The Divisive Game during the most important elections in a lifetime, Mr. Mayor
It’s all about you, isn’t it?
There’s another party out there for you Jerry. They would welcome you with open arms.
Yeah, with the pro-gay crowd, it’s always about them...
In today’s GOP, Akin is the enemy, not Sanders.
obviously he has no ambition beyond being mayor of SD.
you betcha!!!! That is worse than a blundering AKIN....think anyone in the RNC will object? hardly!!
“This will be a tribute to the Romney Agenda.”
It is also a preview of the emerging GOP.
“We’ll hold his feet to the fire!”
No. It is the other way round.
The left continues to dominate ALL U.S. cities, no matter what their political party affiliation is, and this continues to be a profound, long-term problem for all of U.S. conservatism. If the left is, eventually, victorious in getting rid of the electoral college, for all future races for POTUS, then it will, probably and mainly, be U.S. cities that would determine who all future POTUS are!
There needs to be a committee in the Republican party that can expel RINOS, recalcitrants and traitors.
The major’s daughter is a dyke so this should make her happy.
Guess him and Dick Cheney are good friends now.
that would be great.
That’s a very, very valid point. No, I’m not defending Akin, whose ghastly-sounding comment was a four-alarm level example of political ineptitude. But for the GOP to go ballistic on him, yet be comfortable with this sicko mayor’s pro-perv agenda, is a depressing testament of how far in the sewer the GOP has sunk.
Funny, I used to always watch the GOP conventions, for decades, for the satisfaction of experiencing shared ideologies and a certain almost cultural kinship. That seems to really be shot to hell nowadays. With the GOP now at the point of nominating a Massachusetts liberal, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised it’s come to this.
