New York (CNN) -- All nine people injured in Friday's shooting in front of the Empire State Building were wounded by police gunfire, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Saturday.
The officers unloaded a total of 16 rounds at a disgruntled former apparel designer, killing him after he shot and killed a co-worker and engaged in a gunbattle with police, authorities have said.
Police said an investigation is under way after one officer shot nine rounds while another shot seven. Three victims suffered gunshot wounds, while the remaining six were hit by fragments.
The gunman, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the late 1970s, had two rounds left in his .45-caliber pistol. It holds eight rounds, Kelly said.
The violence erupted Friday morning just as visitors began to queue up to ascend the famous New York skyscraper in one of Manhattan's busiest neighborhoods.

Good, solid sequence. I’ve done IDPA competitions for several years, but haven’t had a true ‘face-to-face’, yet. I too, practice daily, yet hoping the day will never come.
Well, at least the officers were unharmed, and afterall, that is the priority. You have to expect a little collateral damage in the process of performing heroic deeds. What I don’t hear is a “thank you” from the people on the street who were protected by the NYPD.
All — that’s not good. More of that and they will be back to carrying batons.
except of coarse for the guy the perp killed. Stupid headline
Just a wild guess, but I think there is a difference between the wounded and the murdered dead guy.
Oh I couldn’t be more opposed to your thinking on this.
ONE perp, NINE wounded villians with a total of 16 shots fired? And, it seems the perp even didn’t get a shot off? Come on! This is horribly inept shooting.
Medical expenses only? What about disability afterwards? You think getting shot by a 9mm or 40 cal is a cakewalk easily recovered from? I’d sue their damned asses off.
Why is the president being briefed on this at all? How many innocent people get killed in Chicago nearly every night of the week by hoodie wearing thugs?
Getting in a shoot out on a congested downtown street sounds like a bad idea. Sometimes reacting without thinking is a bad idea. Unless the man was actively shooting at civvies, the cops should have taken cover and cleared the streets before engaging the gunman. Just my opinion based on the story so far, reserve the right to change it based on new evidence.
I don’t blame the cops for bad shooting in a crisis situation, just bad judgement.
Too ‘jumpy’ for me. That’s also why I put my G32 .357sig away, and switched.
I carry a full size Kimber 1911 .45cal ACP w/ 230gr HPs. Very accurate and precise, like a Rolex.

LOL, I love it!!!
No, not disarming, but arming with a better gun than a high capacity 9mm (I'm just assuming that's what they're carrying). Sure 9mm is nice since you can carry 15+ in a magazine... but you need every single g**damn one of them.
Cops should be carrying a gun capable of a one or two shot stop and they should have the proficiency to actually do it. Here, one cop fires nine rounds and another fires seven! In a densely crowded street. That's a lot of bullets flying around in public that didn't really have to be there. And none of them were from the perp.
People who carry in crowded places-- civilian or police-- need to be thinking about having enough stopping power and good enough shot placement to be hopefully using the minimum number of shots. It's not the place to spray and pray. And Yes-- I'm completely aware that under stress it's a lot harder to actually hit anything than it is to make armchair comments on the Internet. But decisions made at the top can set up the cops on the street one way or another. They can be focused on maximizing firepower or they can be focused on training for one shot, one kill.
I've never liked the 9mm as a police round. It changes the thinking away from careful shot placement and instead toward "overwhelming firepower". It tends to lead to too many bullets flying around in public, IMHO.
“Why is the president being briefed on this at all?”
So he could have his “Tea Party Terrorism” statement ready to go.
3/16 rounds hit ppl.
13/16 rounds hit flowerpots.
They don’t say whether one of those rounds includes the perp.
Watched some footage this morning-shows the cops almost at point-blank range, shooting down the perp.
WHERE were they when they were firing off the other rounds? And was perp hit only once, or more?
Sounds like reckless shooting and ppl are lucky to have survived.
(Perp shot his victim 5 times. Cops said he never got off a shot at them. They shot him when he pointed gun at them directly UP CLOSE.)
Details are confusing.
You can't blame him. Just a few weeks ago Bloomingidiot suggested that all NYC police go on strike to protest armed citizens. LOL
I'll bet you're right.I get to NYC on a fairly regular basis and on the highways approaching the city (I-95/I-87) all you see are billboards for personal injury lawyers. There's one I see whose billboard lists a phone number something like "800-I-Am-Hurt" (I kid you not). Then you get on the subway and every other ad you see in the car is for either a bankruptcy lawyer or an ambulance chaser. And the nauseating thing is they won't go after the estate of the dead guy...he ain't got nothing.Somehow the City of New York will be responsible..."negligence"..."inadequate training"..."faulty equipment",etc.
It's like a case a few years ago in Rhode Island.Bad fire in a nightclub...100 killed. The lawyers didn't just go after the owners,or the band that was playing...not enough $$$.They announced that they were...get this...going to go after Shell Oil Company because they were one of the sponsors of the band's appearance and, therefore, shared responsibility for the tragedy.
We saw that too.
What I'd like to know, is did the two cops who were approaching the suspect know that was the suspect, as all the reports suggest?
If so, why in tarnation would they approach a murder suspect with holstered guns?
Big donuts with big holes in them for the big probes!
“Watched some footage this morning-shows the cops almost at point-blank range, shooting down the perp.”
Do you have a URL for that footage?
I saw it mentioned somewhere else, too, but haven’t found it yet.
