Pro-family, Tea Party leaders coalesce around Todd Akin

ST. LOUIS, August 23, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Now that Todd Akin has said he will be staying in the race for Missouri’s U.S. Senate seat, senior pro-life and conservative leaders including Phyllis Schlafly, Gary Bauer, and others are telling the Republican Party establishment to back off its “over-the-top” campaign to have him step aside. Phyllis Schlafly, Eagle Forum founder, supports Todd Akin. Phyllis Schlafly, Eagle Forum founder, supports Todd Akin.

Phyllis Schlafly, who emerged on the conservative scene with her 1964 book A Choice Not an Echo, rapped party elites for disenfranchising their own voters. “I don’t think people like that should make the decision,” she said. “The people of Missouri should make that decision.”

Both national pro-family leaders and local grassroots conservative leadership are confused and offended by national party leaders such as Karl Rove, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, and Charles Krauthammer, who have vowed to cut funds from Akin’s candidacy or pushed him to withdraw from the race.

Columnist Ann Coulter has suggested Republicans stage a write-in candidacy for former Governor Kit Bond.

“The on-going parade of public denunciations by various GOP leaders is over-the-top and counterproductive,” said Gary Bauer, a former presidential candidate and leader of the Campaign for Working Families, in a statement e-mailed to LifeSiteNews.com, “Some of their public attacks on Akin have been more aggressive than anything some of these leaders have ever said about Barack Obama and his truly radical rejection of the sanctity of human life and his promotion of abortion-on-demand paid for by the taxpayer!”

(Click “like” if you want to end abortion! )

Ryan Bomberger of the Radiance Foundation had a personal stake in the issue. The child of rape, he said, “Quite frankly, I’m glad such a pro-family, pro-life stalwart, despite a few bumps and lots of scrapes, is not quitting under pressure from hypocritical pro-abortion radicals and spineless Republicans.”

Iowa Congressman Steve King, who faced his own media feeding frenzy over abortion remarks taken out of context this week, was as blunt, stating that George Soros-funded media are now “dictating the response of leading Republicans.”

The Show Me state’s conservative leaders have flocked to Akin’s side, as well.

John Putnam, Missouri state coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, said the national party should be “circling the wagons” around their candidate, not condemning him.

Akin won his races with a family-fueled campaign that defied the state’s Republican establishment. That has led local media to conclude he owes them nothing.

If he loses the race, the Republican Party will not take back control of the U.S. Senate. But pro-family leaders say if the Republicans replace Akin, they will almost certainly lose the race.

“After allegations of sexual indiscretions in sealed divorce records, which were leaked to the media, Republican leaders pressured Jack Ryan to withdraw from the 2004 Illinois Senate race,” said Vision America Action President Dr. Rick Scarborough. “That’s how we ended up with Barack Obama in the White House—a steep price to pay for Republican squeamishness.”

“Missouri voters – who gave Akin the GOP Senate nomination – are wise enough to decide who they’d prefer to send to Washington, ultra-liberal Clair McCaskill or a decent man and an authentic conservative who misspoke,” he said.

Many see the tempest-in-a-tea-party as little more than an attempt to marginalize pro-life voices within the Republican Party. Judie Brown of the American Life League wrote, “This is really not about Akin at all; it is about the red herring that pro-abortion forces have used for years to define genuine pro-life apologists as zealots, fanatics and unrealistic Pollyannas.”

Despite Akin’s remarks, Public Policy Polling, a Democrat-leaning firm, found him polling one point ahead of Democratic incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill, 44-43. “GOP voters dislike McCaskill so much they’re not going to vote for her no matter what their nominee does,” the firm found. “Independent voters haven’t moved at all either.”

Putnam said from his perspective, the only way Akin can prevail is “if the pro-life community gets behind him and makes this a national campaign.”

“The campaign that’s been waged against him this week is stronger than anything McCaskill can come up with on her own, thanks in large part to his own party.”

When is everyone going to face the political realities of what Akin has done.

Not only his own senate race, but also now Rasmussen has Obama up by one in the presidential race, after Romney was up by 5 last week. A total disaster in the making.

Tell me again how Akin is going to pull this off.

I see you're back. Would you care to answer my question at reply 166?

So it's your contention that every report of rape is a case of an actual rape
occurring and there are no false reports of rape whatsoever?

He has lost 20 points since his major league gaff. Latest Rasmussen Poll:

“Todd Akin (R) 38%

Claire McCaskill (D) 48%

Other 2%

Not Sure 3%

That’s about as dead as it gets. Ask someone who knows something about how elections really work.”

Political realism is something quite alien to some people on this board.

Akin’s use of the phrase “legitimate rape” was bizarre and offensive
__________________________________________

So called “offensive” to who else besides the pro-abortion Wiloloard who uses “legitimate rape” as an excuse for murdering the resulting baby and didnt want anyone to be able to disqualify it...

Akin didnt “offend” me...

The ugly mouth of Willard was the one who was offensive...

Abortion-on-demand Willard wants to set the pro-life movement back...

He wants to squash it if he can...

He doesnt want any pro-life opposition in the US Senate for his pro-abortion agenda...

Willard founsd the perfect excuse to sideline a strong pro-life Senator and he jumped in with both liberal feet...

This bruhaha was caused by Williard and his Giddy Ship of Fools the LolliGOP...

Please do ping Jim. My views on abortion or gays was not stated. I said I do not like any cause attached to the TEA Party other than getting our financial house in order. As far as my statement on WACKOS, I stand by that. If our country doesn't get rid of Obama and ObamaCare, kiss any pro-life, anti-gay position good-bye. I dislike Romney as much as Jim does, but I wasn't part of the holier than thou crowd that wouldn't back the only other viable candidate we had, Newt. The situation is what it is because people were stupid. We are stuck with Romney or Obama. You can continue on any path you choose. I will continue to fight the best battle I can fight.

The thing that is stunning me is how these people are totally ignoring the fact that the man is completely selfish. He made a mistake, his first reaction to that should have been “I don’t want to hurt our chances”. Instead his first reaction was “Me first”. I can forgive his “oops” what I can’t forgive his his utter selfishness.

I agree. Yet in his statements, he thinks he's "helping the country, not himself" by staying in the race. The man is completely delusional.

Good luck with this seat now, Missouri voters... you're gonna need it.

Hell no, no one is that naive, the point is he categorized rape, legitimate =illegitimate.

so where does that come from in a political campaign?

Mary MacGregor: Robert, there is more. I am carrying a child and I do not know who is the father.
Robert Roy MacGregor: Ach, Mary...
Mary MacGregor: I could not kill it, husband.
Robert Roy MacGregor: It's not the child that needs killing.

That was beautiful. Never seen the movie. Will look for it now. Thank you.

JR hasn’t been mute. He supports Akin. This is what he said at http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2922134/posts?page=157#157

“My take is the baby is innocent. Always is. Akin is pro life. If he’s the candidate, I support him.”

Having read Romney’s plan, it is called “repeal and replace”.

What he means by that is repealing ObamaCare (if possible), or parts, and “replacing” it with a requirement for each state to have their own healthcare plan. That is, healthcare at the state level instead of the national level.

In American politics there really aren't any moderates ~ nor independents. Everybody is part of a faction that is just one of many affiliated with the Republican coalition.

I"m sorry to say Akin didn't PO moderates or independents ~ but he did PO many hard core Conservatives as soon as he became a focus of discussion.

This dude let Democrats run ads for him in the primaries.

That's kinda' like being a Republican office holder and making donations to Democrats.

It goes beyond bizarre!

The other two leading candidates are both arguably far more Conservative than Akin.

Oh, and he gave an interview to a very dangerous Leftwingtard geek ~ and that just shouldn't have happened. The RNC Senatorial Committe and the RNC Chairman are to blame for that one. They appear to not have any concern for the actual candidates.

TIme to get rid of Preibus and some of his funny little friends too.

The TEAParty can do whatever it wants, but if you want to win elections under the Republican brand you have to deal with the Socons, Defensecons, Prolifecons, and so on.

Otherwise on your own you are just another funny little faction orbiting the foci of American politics ~ the Single member district.

Soros didn’t inspire me. It is not fair because Akin is a good man. Or was until people learned what an arrogant and selfish *ss he is. If he is not gone, he will be the focus of unfair but effective RAT commercials until Nov. 6 all across the country. The damage will be considerable.

SOLUTION: Akin make a deal with the Republican Central Committee in Missouri to withdraw if he can name an equally fervent pro-life conservative candidate. For those who see pro-life as the most important thing in their life, this is a winner. A strong pro-lifer who will actually win the seat and do some good in the Senate. You don’t do anything in the Senate if you never get there.

BTW, the only 'put on trial' questions in recent years have arisen under the aegis of putting a rapist on trial for his life.

That's a separate issue from killing the kid, but I can handle the finer points of that situation should you have a prohibition of all abortion except where rape or incest is involved. Then you'd have to have the capital trial of the rapist FIRST just to prove there'd been a rape ~ then you could kill the kid ~ and in some cases he or she would already be born!

Trying to find a pro-abort to pop up and argue the other side on this issue.

Hell no, no one is that naive...
So you've got two categories yourself. A "legitimate" rape and an "illegitimate" rape.

...the point is he categorized rape...
Just like you did!

...legitimate =illegitimate.
Where did he "equate", which is what your "equal sign" means, legitimate rape to be the same as an illegitimate, or false report of, rape?

This?
It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.

Coming to a conclusion such as yours from that statement is one hell of a reach!

You're creating an issue where none exists.

What Akin claimed is not backed up by any science, or logical conclusions,

The sources for his information have been posted here and include articles written by a doctor. If "stress" is the main point of controversy, it's easy for anyone to confuse one form of stress with another. Basically he stated verbatim what came from Dr. Willke's article, so I'm not blaming him for reading a well-written, researched article and more or less believing it. Akin never said he was sure it was absolute fact and qualified his statements.

with such basic ignorance of BASIC reproduction and logic, he has no business near the business end of legislative creation.

He's been a successful legislator for a long time and appears to have one of the top conservative voting records out there. By that token he has more business being a legislator than 90% of the legislators out there.

It's not just about pro-life. Akin's got a far more fiscally conservative voting record than Paul Ryan, for example. Akin is one of the top Tea Party conservatives in Congress judging by his voting record, and he was this way even before the Tea Party existed when he opposed No Child Left Behind. Do we judge a man by his whole career or one sentence?

Yet, Akin chose to run as a Republican and he ran against Conservatives in the primaries. He allowed in Democrat help to do that.

That makes him pretty much the same sort of politician as Romney, and I"d suggest we are oversubscribed to that kind as it is.

One fewer of that kind is not a catastrophe.

“legitimate rape to be the same as an illegitimate”

Look he used the word not me.

If you state something is legitimate, it means you have categorized it. If something is legitimate, ergo something else has to be illegitimate. Words have meanings.

If there are legitimate rapes, then there has to be illegitimate rapes. It goes hand in hand, its called deductive reasoning.
