Todd Akin: That Rasmussen poll showing me down by 10 points is great news

Doug Brady

I’m beyond speechless. What is this guy drinking? Stacy Drake, one of my fellow C4P editors, summed it up best in an email:

Who knew Baghdad Bob moved to Missouri?

With that, via Jim Hoft, anyone who goes to Todd Akin’s website will have the privilege of reading the following pearl of wisdom:

St. Louis, MO: The following statement was released by Perry Akin, Campaign Manager for Todd Akin for Senate, in response to the Rasmussen poll released this morning: “The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48% after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is. If she can’t break fifty percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down. Todd is in this race to win; we will close this gap and win in November with the support of the grassroots in Missouri and across America.”

This is an example of the breathtaking ignorance we’re up against, folks.....

Punchline: He gets to the pearly gates and asks, "Why didn`t you save me?" God replies, "You didn`t see the Coast Guard cutter I sent?"

"I am beginning to think some do not like him since he is very strong pro-life."

No, it's because he's proven himself to be an inept politician who has damaged the cause rather than helped it.

Where's his humility? If it wasn't about him, he wouldn't even consider risking the possibility that Obamacare (which expands abortion funding and will absolutely increase abortions) may now become the permanent law of the land because he blew it, yet resists stepping aside for a more sensible and articulate pro-life candidate.

Charles Krauthammer gave the best advice of all:

Someone needs to put a horse’s head in Akin’s bed to send him a message.

You think only Senators can have an opinion about Senators?

That may be the silliest post on SI of all times.

He’s from the Huckabee/Robertson wing of the party so no matter how bad he screws up his followers will believe they can pray their way out of it. Unfortunately, these are not the kind of folks that listen to reason.

And just for the record, dumb as Akin’s statement was, I’d agree with his hardcore SoCon supporters that it is totally unfair that his entire career has been destroyed because of this. Most of us probably say dumb stuff each and every day and it doesn’t matter. Sadly, this seat is just vastly more important than worrying about Akin’s career, feelings, ego, etc. This isn’t some admin position down at the corner dentist office. We are talking about a US Senate seat here. We’re in the “big’s”, and yeah, one slip up and you’re out.

“Potential first lesson of politics: No matter how much you love him, do not select your son to run your campaign. He may have a hard time acknowledging difficult truths when the candidate is someone so close to him.”

I don't get this picture?
It looks like 1/2 of the old 1960’s TV show, “The Time Tunnel” (Which I loved as a kid!) but all possible space-time events put you in bib overalls sitting on a bale of hay in from of a lady in a striped shirt & white skirt!

I am beginning to think some do not like him since he is very strong pro-life.

Oh BS. Akin isn't doing the pro-life movement any favors by staying in the race. If that was what Akin really cared about he could have said "I will drop out if my replacement is as strongly pro-life as I am". This is about Akin's ego. Sure, some of his friends like Huckabee put that friendship above politics. That's what you'd expect his friends to do. But for the rest of us, cold hard politics is what matters here. The seat is vastly more important than Akin's career, his feelings, his ego, etc, etc.

Some think he's on the take but I say he's an engineer and professional politician. Arrogance is his natural state

As an outgrowth he believes his candidacy is providential.

God Himself could come down from Heaven and tell Akin to step aside and Akin would go find someone to say, "That's not God; He's an imposter!" (with apologies to Tom Marr)

so you think

“engineer + professional politician = arrogance”

How about just “professional politician = arrogance”

I fail to see what engineer has to do with it?

He is not leaving. God told him it was his duty to fight against those elitists in liberal media - i.e. Hannity, Levin, Rush, Malkin, Coulter, Walker, Rubio, Ryan...

Doesn't Sarah Palin talk like that?

It was a profound statement on your part when you said the the guys with the nets will be coming...They’re needed now.

I may have underestimated the number of guys and nets we need, given the fact that Akin is polling 38%. They can't all be relatives.

Yes, I believe you are correct. I have questioned a handful of people commenting on Free Republic who are strongly anti-Akin, and they have admitted that they are not against abortion in cases of rape and incest. Their reasons have not been explained, but a child of rape is no different than any other, and must be defended. And the mother should be cared for so she doesn't make a huge error during her time of extreme sorrow, anger, and confusion. It is incorrect that a raped woman receiving an abortion will forget the violent act that caused her to be with child in the first place. Instead she will remember BOTH the rape AND the killing... for the rest of her life.

Akin is the drowning guy who turns away the Coast Guard in a hurricane because God will save him.

And who is the Coast Guard here??? the people telling him to just go away.

My God... SC`s Alvin Greene had a better grip on reality than this guy.

Maybe he`s unwittingly building the GOP`s case to legally remove him from the campaign. He`s showing us all he belongs in a padded cell.
