Akin Assessing Candidacy With Conservatives In Florida
KERO 23 TV (CNN) ^ | UPDATED: 2:03 pm PDT August 23, 2012 | Peter Hamby and Mark Preston

Tampa, Florida (CNN) -- Facing pressure from Republican heavyweights in Washington to abandon his Missouri Senate bid, Rep. Todd Akin is huddling with top conservative activists in Tampa to assess whether to move forward with his embattled candidacy.

Akin spent Wednesday night and Thursday in a series of private meetings at the two-day summit of the Council For National Policy (CNP), a secretive group of conservative leaders who are meeting in Florida before next week's RNC.

-snip-

Multiple sources at the CNP conference told CNN that Akin is being encouraged by leading figures in the conservative movement to remain in the Senate race even as he faces pressure from Republican establishment.

-snip-

Asked if Akin is using the meetings to re-evaluate his decision to stay in the Missouri race, a source close to the congressman told CNN that he is "keeping an open ear to those people who are pushing him or questioning him on viability."

But the source stressed that Akin is "getting a ton of support" from conservatives at the conference.

-snip-

Several of the conservatives attending the conference - most of whom refused to speak on the record because of the secretive nature of the CNP -- expressed resentment at the aggressive and heavy-handed treatment of Akin by Republican leaders in Washington who have pressured him to quit the Missouri race.

At least two people at the conference named Karl Rove, a co-founder of the powerful 527 group American Crossroads, as a specific source of frustration.

Rove's relationship with the activist wing of his party has grown frosty over the years, and sources backing Akin said they might not be rallying to his side with such vigor if Rove was not among those pushing Akin to get out.

The GOP should have just shut up and called the guy on the phone instead of using the media...They all made it worse...now they can make adds with the loud mouths

Right. A better way to handle this. And many other ways to handle this situation.

Actually, Levin didn’t find out until Priebus clued him in to the 25th. So you think in the mean time that Levin is going to still join the RINO chorus (I don’t think so) helping the Dems attack Akin, but we will see what he says when he gets back. Today he has a guest host.

Actually, the boneheads in the RNC are the traitors giving aid and comfort to the Dems.

Well, the Dems, specifically McCaskill, are giving "aid and comfort" to Akin in the form of nearly $2M. Best case scenario: a wash. (Which means McCaskill wins, 'cause you know what happens when it's close in a state run by a Dem SOS.)

If only. The Dem opposition in most of the seats you mention can now point to Akin, and it will draw votes from our candidates in those elections. If you think the damage will be limited to MO, you’re just plain wrong. We’re so screwed, because of one very selfish, arrogant jerk in MO.

There is a certain brand of conservatives who take pride in being pure and losing elections. This is so much more satisfying to them than actually winning elections and taking responsibility for governing.

Some of these purists are great friends of the left and will even get their grudging praise in return for their help in making conservative governance less likely.

Rove wants a nice, safe, compliant moderate in that race.

There is a certain brand of “Republican” who takes pride in considering any normal conservative to be a “purist,” and wants us all to vote for progressives or socialist RINOs like Mitt Romney to appeal to the Dem voters.

It will hurt your brain and make it cramp if you think about it too long. This is highly unfair... granted. Life is not fair and the older I get... the more I come to understand this. Life is good times and bad times... making mistakes and hopefully learning from them. Fair or not... he destroyed any chance of victory. I have not talked with a single right wing woman that has not been turned off by his ignorant statement... misworded... mistaken or heartfelt. They found it offensive because it was construed to be nonchalant about a woman being raped and for stating that women can control conception under rape conditions. Most of the women that I have talked with are terrified of rape and I cannot blame them.

The article is long and had to be excerpted. It should be read in it's entirety.

My point was Red, with his excerpt choices, left the impression that Akin had more support than he actually has.

The article names an impressive list of people whose advice Akin is hearing. Phyllis Schlafly may be the best person to weigh in on this whole mess. She has a lifetime of dealing with press bias and all things female.

Well, the Dems, specifically McCaskill, are giving "aid and comfort" to Akin in the form of nearly $2M.

You really think Akin had anything to do with those political McCaskill political ads?

And it's up to 2M instead of 1.5M? It was a desperate move by McCaskill who was losing by double digits in the polls. So she makes these political ads who she thought was the most conservative to coax her base from smoking dope to come out and vote and support her cause. Akin misspoke has nothing to do with McCaskill political ads. Unless you actually saw McCaskill pulling puppet strings attached to Akin's mouth to form and say the wrong words. No - that nutso.

Her intervention would definitely be useful.

Unlike most of you I live in Missouri and can vote in the upcoming election. I voted for Steelman. I knew very little about Akin. I was welling to give him a look , as I would never vote for a Dem. What Akin said and how he handled the firestorm afterward turned me off to voting for him. The people of Missouri were ready to send McCaskill home. Now most likely she will have an easy time in the election. Akin appears to be in it just for himself and not thinking about the big picture. The GOP had every right to ask what they did. Things like what happened are just a fact of life. We in Missouri will most likely have to wait six more years to have a crack at replacing our Senator.

My point was Red, with his excerpt choices, left the impression that Akin had more support than he actually has.

While you point to one, a sidebar, who thinks he should drop out, Akin actually does have wide spread support according to "multiple sources" inside the CNP conference.

To repeat this again since it does get ignored:

"Multiple sources at the CNP conference told CNN that Akin is being encouraged by leading figures in the conservative movement to remain in the Senate race even as he faces pressure from Republican establishment.

And this little tidbit being ignored:

" "But the source stressed that Akin is "getting a ton of support" from conservatives at the conference. "
