Akin Assessing Candidacy With Conservatives In Florida
KERO 23 TV (CNN) ^ | UPDATED: 2:03 pm PDT August 23, 2012 | Peter Hamby and Mark Preston

Tampa, Florida (CNN) -- Facing pressure from Republican heavyweights in Washington to abandon his Missouri Senate bid, Rep. Todd Akin is huddling with top conservative activists in Tampa to assess whether to move forward with his embattled candidacy.

Akin spent Wednesday night and Thursday in a series of private meetings at the two-day summit of the Council For National Policy (CNP), a secretive group of conservative leaders who are meeting in Florida before next week's RNC.

-snip-

Multiple sources at the CNP conference told CNN that Akin is being encouraged by leading figures in the conservative movement to remain in the Senate race even as he faces pressure from Republican establishment.

-snip-

Asked if Akin is using the meetings to re-evaluate his decision to stay in the Missouri race, a source close to the congressman told CNN that he is "keeping an open ear to those people who are pushing him or questioning him on viability."

But the source stressed that Akin is "getting a ton of support" from conservatives at the conference.

-snip-

Several of the conservatives attending the conference - most of whom refused to speak on the record because of the secretive nature of the CNP -- expressed resentment at the aggressive and heavy-handed treatment of Akin by Republican leaders in Washington who have pressured him to quit the Missouri race.

At least two people at the conference named Karl Rove, a co-founder of the powerful 527 group American Crossroads, as a specific source of frustration.

Rove's relationship with the activist wing of his party has grown frosty over the years, and sources backing Akin said they might not be rallying to his side with such vigor if Rove was not among those pushing Akin to get out.

Let’s hope Akin stays, if only to p*** off the GOPe and the herd animals that call themselves “conservative.”

This is Rove’s fault? Seriously?

So now we have RINO Sarah Palin and RINO Mark Levin and countless other actual true-blue conservatives begging this man to drop out and they’re ALL RINO????

Akin is a very nice conservative who said some incredibly stupid things and now cannot win this seat. He is perhaps the only person on the planet who cannot defeat Claire McCaskill. Remember, he is her picked candidate and his continuance in the race is fully endorsed and supported by all Democrats. Any number of very conservative replacements are ready to step up to the plate and will win running away.

Does it not strike you as odd that your position is the same as the lunatic lefty crowd?

Seriously, that Rove is a RINO.

Mark Levin is now behind Akin because he’s staying in but did criticize him for staying. He knows exactly what’s on the other side. And I have never called Palin a RINO to make it clear. Don’t read into things.

You know, I’m becoming more and more certain that there are Soros (or some other Progressive individual(s)/organizations) funded individuals who are paid to be on consevative forums and spread discord and good old FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt). And I have my suspicions as to who some of them are.

I think we are seeing the rise of a take them all down movement and teach the GOP a lesson so we can run who we want in 2016. What is not being factored is that after another four years of Barack Obama, there won't be a real election in 2016 or a country that resembles the USA.

RINO Rove is at it again.

...interesting, Akin and the conservatives urging him to stay in ...are only making Rove look better by comparison. Their egos are getting in the way - they are not standing up for any principles - just standing in the way of a conservative winning the senate seat in Mo.

Not surprisingly, you left out this part...

Participants in Thursday's meetings, though, said support for Akin was not universal among conservatives.

Richard Land, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission at the Southern Baptist Convention, said that while Akin misspoke and has been treated “unfairly,” he should still drop out.

“I think it splits the social conservative movement,” Land told CNN. “Some people say, ‘Look, he is our guy, we are going to stand with him. We think he can win.’ And some people are saying, ‘The odds are this is a fatal blow at least in this election cycle.’ For the good of the movement, for the good of the pro life cause, for the good of taking control of the senate for pro life forces, he needs to do what's best for the cause and throw himself on his shield.”

Right. Who needs that seat in MO? As far as I’m concerned, it’s lost. Gone. And it was a sure pickup before the selfish dumbass blew off his mouth last weekend. So sad. Because of his denial about the damage done, we’ll probably have Obamacare forever. A nice day’s work.

There are plenty of un-employed rats stealing wifi from near by homes or businesses willing to post that kind of drivel here and other places for free.

They are among us.

Futhermore, after Akin decided to stay, Levin on his radio show told the RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to get behind him to defeat McCaskill. Priebus balked at the suggestion but gave the impression when this thing settles down and Akin happens to stay in the race, they might consider sending RNC support.

Rove IS a RINO- I certainly agree with that- I just know there are a multitude of good, decent, PRO LIFE people who do NOT want to see Akin stay in this and yet are being called on the carpet for not being pure enough.

I know Levin said basically- if the guy is staying in- then he must get elected..but wanted him out.

I guess I’m alarmed at the number of people who think Akin staying in is a good idea. It’s bad enough that our country is already so divided- now we on the right are dividing ourselves too. I have sympathy for Akin- but I do not see any principle that he’s actually standing up for- other than the people should have better manners and accept his apology and then behave as if it never happened.

This is politics- not church.

A-hole wouldn't take their calls. There was a thread about it Monday/Tuesday.
