After days of ignoring Republican pleas to abandon his U.S. Senate campaign in Missouri, Rep. Todd Akin today received an even more damning message: A new Rasmussen poll shows that Akin, who held a tidy lead before making his controversial comments about rape and pregnancy, is now down 10 percentage points (48-38 percent) to incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.
Never fazed, the Akin campaign shot back with an unlikely proposal.
“The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48 percent after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is,” Akin spokesman Perry Akin said in a statement. “If she can’t break 50 percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down.”
McCaskill, whose political career might well have been saved by Akin’s moment of madness, went online to cast doubt on the validity of the survey.
“Rasmussen poll made me laugh out loud,” she tweeted. “If anyone believes that, I just turned 29. Sneaky stuff.”
McCaskill then linked to a story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel claiming Rasmussen, with its ties to high-powered Republican operatives like Karl Rove, had intentionally stretched the spread in an effort to push Akin out of the race.
The final deadline for Akin to withdraw is Sept. 25. After that his name cannot be replaced on the ballot. But there is no indication he’s even considering it.
Today, he reported on his Facebook page, ”Thousands and thousands of people have stepped up today and helped us raise over $100,000 in donations as small as $3. The message is loud and clear… the people of Missouri believe they should pick candidates, not party bosses or Washington elites.”

Mike Huckabee has always been a principled social conservative, and he is precisely right about an orchestrated attack on a pro-life candidate. The following paragraph, though, is an indication that Huckabee has realized that social conservatives are no longer welcome in the GOP. It is an astounding thing for a major republican leader to write with such obvious bitterness. You MUST read it:
Who ordered this "Code Red" on Akin? There were talking point memos sent from the National Republican Senatorial Committee suggesting language to urge Akin to drop out. Political consultants were ordered to stay away from Akin or lose future business with GOP committees. Operatives were recruited to set up a network of pastors to call Akin to urge him to get out. Money has changed hands to push him off the plank. It is disgraceful. From the spotlights of political offices and media perches, it may appear that the demand for Akin’s head is universal in the party. I assure you it is not. There is a vast, but mostly quiet army of people who have an innate sense of fairness and don't like to see a fellow political pilgrim bullied. If Todd Akin loses the Senate seat, I will not blame Todd Akin. He made his mistake, but was man enough to admit it and apologize. Maybe e-Claire thinks he will drop out of the race now that he has not much money to spend. She would like nothing better and the GOPe has been of no help. Do we all remember that the only thing Karl Rove cares about is that a voter and politican has an “R” next to their name.
For a relative newbie, you’re certainly posting a lot of attacks on Akin in every thread. As I’ve already said here a bit earlier, why should Freepers be helping the enemy attack our own guy? At least he’s solidly conservative and pro-life, unlike romney. And, contrary to the liberal spin, what he said was incautious, but not that far off. Far worse things are said by numerous politicians every day, and nothing said. I WONDER WHY THE LEFT FOCUSED ON THIS? AND WHY SO MANY RINOS ARE HELPING THEM DO IT?
I counted two whole pages of your recent posts in the forum, and every reply but one or two was an attack on Akin. I didn’t bother to check a third page, because I assume you’ve been doing this like mad ever since the story broke—as have a few others.
This. The only thing Claire is scared of is Akin dropping out. She hasn’t even had to campaign against the guy, he’s basically destroyed himself. When she actually does start campaigning, she’ll be sure to finish the job, the way she backed him financially through that advertising to the tune of $2 million, she’s got more dirt on him and is likely waiting until after the 25th to drop the boom.

THERE IS NOTHING a senator can do about it! In fact, there is VERY LITTLE a President can do about it - it was found to be a constitutional right by the USSC! All the President can do is appoint Original Constructionists to the USSC and wait for a case that would overturn Roe v. Wade to come up .
For that to happen we MUST have a President that will appoint Original Constructionist jurists AND a Senate that will confirm them!

Well when Akin steps down and Brunner, Wagner or Steelman take his spot, I’ll be cheering for them, bright, true conservatives who don’t have a mental dysfunction. Hope you can get over your disappointment on Obama Claire losing her sure victory enough to join me, otherwise you can head to DU and I’m sure you’ll find consolation there! :)
Thank you so very, very much for the eye opening post. I have been trying to point this out myself but it has fallen on deaf ears. Those posting the nasty comments about Akin do sound like liberals and are NOT using their heads. I concur with xzins this campaign has been orchestrated by the GOPe and now I am wondering if they are in bed with the Dems. If so, may God have mercy on their souls.

The GOP has no options in the beginning. Akin would essentially have to sue to have his name taken off the ballot and pay the costs for reprinting (any) ballots. The GOP would then be allowed to select a replacement candidate, up until the 25th of September I believe.
115.359. Withdrawal of candidacy, deadline for, how made.—1. Any person who has filed a declaration of candidacy for nomination and who wishes to withdraw as a candidate shall, not later than the eleventh Tuesday prior to the primary election, file a written, sworn statement of withdrawal in the office of the official who accepted such candidate’s declaration of candidacy. Any person nominated for an office who wishes to withdraw as a candidate shall, not later than the eleventh Tuesday prior to the general election, file a written, sworn statement of withdrawal in the office of the official who accepted such candidate’s declaration of candidacy. In addition, any person who has filed a declaration of candidacy for nomination or who is nominated for an office who wishes to withdraw as a candidate due to being named as the party candidate for a different office by a party nominating committee pursuant to sections 115.363 to 115.377 may withdraw as a candidate no later than 5:00 p.m. on the fifth day after being named as the party candidate for a different office by the party nominating committee.
2. Except as provided for in section 115.247, if there is no additional cost for the printing or reprinting of ballots, or if the candidate agrees to pay any printing or reprinting costs, a candidate who has filed or is nominated for an office may, at any time after the time limits set forth in subsection 1 of this section but no later than 5:00 p.m. on the sixth Tuesday before the election, withdraw as a candidate pursuant to a court order, which, except for good cause shown by the election authority in opposition thereto, shall be freely given upon application by the candidate to the circuit court in the county of such candidate’s residence. No withdrawal pursuant to this subsection shall be effective until such candidate files a copy of the court’s order in the office of the official who accepted such candidate’s declaration of candidacy.

The name of a person who has properly filed a declaration of candidacy, or of a person nominated for office, who has not given notice of withdrawal as provided in subsection 1 or 2 of this section shall, except in case of death or disqualification, be printed on the official primary or general election ballot, as the case may be. PhxTM06 is just venting the frustration that anyone who cares for this country feels seeing stupid, hick, b*stards like Akin, King and Huckabee killing the momentum of the Romney/Ryan ticket and breathing life into the "war on women" bull.
Ordinarily fiscal conservatives can write off the antics of these clowns with "bless his heart" condescension.
But these aren't ordinary times. The republic is at stake and we can't afford this cr*p.
