After days of ignoring Republican pleas to abandon his U.S. Senate campaign in Missouri, Rep. Todd Akin today received an even more damning message: A new Rasmussen poll shows that Akin, who held a tidy lead before making his controversial comments about rape and pregnancy, is now down 10 percentage points (48-38 percent) to incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.
Never fazed, the Akin campaign shot back with an unlikely proposal.
The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48 percent after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is, Akin spokesman Perry Akin said in a statement. If she cant break 50 percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down.
McCaskill, whose political career might well have been saved by Akins moment of madness, went online to cast doubt on the validity of the survey.
Rasmussen poll made me laugh out loud, she tweeted. If anyone believes that, I just turned 29. Sneaky stuff.
McCaskill then linked to a story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel claiming Rasmussen, with its ties to high-powered Republican operatives like Karl Rove, had intentionally stretched the spread in an effort to push Akin out of the race.
The final deadline for Akin to withdraw is Sept. 25. After that his name cannot be replaced on the ballot. But there is no indication hes even considering it.
Today, he reported on his Facebook page, Thousands and thousands of people have stepped up today and helped us raise over $100,000 in donations as small as $3. The message is loud and clear
the people of Missouri believe they should pick candidates, not party bosses or Washington elites.

When you get to the bottom of the bottle don’t accept the worm as a muse.
Akin has more balls than all of the GOPe combined. His own party has done an Alinsky on him and he is still hanging in there and fighting. The GOPe does not like Akin for some reason. Wonder who they got their marching order from?
Nothing personal, but many of the Freepers on these threads seem to be acting like a bunch of jerks. Of course Akin is down, after a 24-7 attack on him by every talking head, every media source, every Democrat politician, and ALMOST EVERY so-called conservative.
Yet he’s right. Claire McCaskill, the incumbent, still can’t put together a majority, even after all this.
So, are all the so-called “conservatives” going to do the baby-killing Democrats’ work for them, and keep on attacking Akin until the election?
We don’t need any left wing propaganda shills, evidently. Stupid Republicans are determined to jump on board the propaganda train the left wingers started, and drive it all the way back to the terminal for them. Free of charge, no questions asked.
Look I am only looking at the bigger picture here, he might be the most solid conservative on the planet, yet he is damaged goods in my opion.
One more thing had this happened a few years ago, I might have a different outlook on this, it is not about him anymore for me, it is about this county.
Would you like me to rephrase it in a much more PC form for you? Okay. Todd Akin is a bit what you might call...intellectually challenged.
What do you expect after being totally trashed by the GOPe and Sean Hannity, etc. But we’ll forgive dimwit Biden!
If the GOP would go after obama like they have Akin even Romney would have a chance against the worst President in our history!
Get ‘em. I believe this person is a troll and working for the McKatKiller campaign. I have seen the same behavior.
I see Akin as simply a naive guy who has been lucky to some degree in the past in local politics in the state. He’s not witty, charming, or that intelligent. When some unknown PAC came up during the primary and pushed an ad or two at the right time....he never asked who they were or where their money came from. For the amount they tossed into their ads....it didn’t take much to put him into the right position.
As for now? I think the naive of the guy, and those around him.....simply dictate that he continue on. He can’t win, but he’ll get the forty percent level which looks decent.
As for him dropping out and some Tea-Party campaign suddenly erupting? My guess is that if you had forty-five days....you just might be able to pull a write-in vote for some person that independents might drift to. If he waits this out to the last week....then it pretty much destroys the election anyway.
BS. If it was about the country, you would have held Mitt Romney to the same standard. And if you really think the GOPe is aiming to save this seat, you’re wrong. Defend the guy you got, don’t run another freaking candidate to divide the vote.
I think this putz has had a nervous breakdown
And the stupid goober Huckabee is behind him all the way. And now Sharron Angle’s loser campaign manager is also calling for Akin to stay in the race too. We are beset by idiots, as the Senate and perhaps the next Supreme Court hangs in the balance.
Todd Akin is a loon and fast becoming a laughingstock. He will be lucky to be polling in the low 30’s before election day. I listened to both of his interviews on Hannity and he comes across as Barney Fife. He may be a solid pro life supporter, but his position on abortion alone does not make him a viable candidate for the US Senate.
I just want to know why you chose to join FR last month.
Good post, thank you. Someone who gets it!
Like I said, a few years ago I would have a different outlook on this. Not today. Just me though.
You sound like a mouth piece for e-Claire.
I just want to get that Senate Seat, it was ours for the taking, but this guy actually thinks that going from up 11 to now down 10 is somehow a “good thing.” He’ll probably lose by 15 points in November, maybe more, but if a miracle does take place and he wins I will be very happy. I dont care if its Akin or someone else I just want to see McCaskill lose, can’t stand that woman, she is Obama’s #1 Dem for a reason
The thing McCaskill is really scared of is Akin actually dropping out of the race.
