Fox News Outs The Navy SEAL Who Wrote An Anonymous Book On The Bin Laden Raid
Business Insider ^ | 8/23/12 | Geoffrey Ingersoll

Posted on 08/23/2012 11:53:02 AM PDT by Jean S

Turns out there are leaks everywhere, even among Navy SEALs.

Fox News obtained and released the identity of the author of the controversial new book "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden,"  due to come out on the anniversary of 9/11.

"Mark Owen," the pseudonym under which the book was written, is actually 35 year-old Matt Bissonnette of Wrangell, Alaska. Bissonnette held the rank of chief in the elite Navy SEAL Team 6 prior to retiring. He was one of the first men in the room where bin Laden died, witnessing the occurrence first-hand.

We tracked down pictures of Bissonnett on  PatriotFiles.com and Flickr.

Bissonnette was also part of the operation which ended with the killing of three Somali pirates in order to save the life of Captain Richard Phillips in the Indian Ocean in 2009.

He co-wrote the book with author  Kevin Maurer, a well-versed author of four books, most based on military special operations.

What is this “vetted” stuff? Do you think the wacko Islamic fundamentalists care if this book was vetted? Americans will buy it or not, believe it or not. Those who hate us,,they will now be after this guy! Get it? Vetting has nothing to do with it. It’s a matter of safety. This man participated in killing one of the saints of terrorism. Where in the hell do you have any proof that the wacko Islamists are worried about making sure they have the right guy,,or making sure they have the truth? Wow,,now even his kids are in danger!

“These men should remain mysterious for a reason: they are America’s Best.”

Yes, they should remain mysterious....so instead he writes a book. Did he put anyone else at danger with the info in the book? Bottom line is he sold out and should be ashamed of himself.

Yes, I can talk about it without mentioning his name, can you?

I understand your point but sadly it's too late.

What stinks is that there are those such as yourself, that think it’s OK to filter the truth through controllers.

I’ll take the eye witness testimony of a hero over ‘vetted’ propaganda any day.

It’s unfortunate that Fox has sacrificed their cerdibility at the Obama Ass Altar.

.
Bet your life on it.

Ok so what should he have done? He used a pseudonym and used fake names for the other Seals.....how else should he have gotten the information out?
I understand if there is a disagreement about whether or not he should have put the info out,,but if you are going to criticize how he put it out,,then please,,how would you have put it out?

FWIW, and to no one in particular, I am NOT saying he desrves to be outed, or this is a moral or ethical thing that was done to him. The problem the SEALS face, IMO, is their CIC is a rotten SOB who does not care for them except for what they can do for him. It’s a rotten deal all around.

Hi there Jean. I understand what you are saying and your point is well taken. However, my plea is that we do not add to it by putting his identity out there. That’s all. FR is full of patriots and people who support the military....and I don’t want us to be part of the “snitch” chain,,if that makes any sense.

I understand it is the media that is initially responsible. In this case it’s FOX,,which just makes me sick.

Yes.

And even the advance publicity for the book said it told of his growing up in Alaska. How many Seal Team Six members grew up in Alaska? Narrows it down a bit, I would say.

I think the whole anonymity bit was a publicity stunt by the publisher to drum up interest in the book.

I’m saying he should not have wrote a book. And if you do chose to write a book you have to expect consequences. I have a deep respect for the military. and I personally believe our military should be held to a higher standard. Not cashing in by writing a book.

Then why write a book?

What cashing in? All of his earnings are going to Wounded Warrior or some other military related charity. He did this to expose the truth, probably with the blessing of fellow soldiers.

Why’d he write a book?

Well, not until a couple or so decades had passed and what is written can no longer have an adverse consequence in the present. We’d be poorer for not having the memoirs of veterans of long-ago wars recording their experiences for posterity...

RWGinger had asked for a link to the Fox News story, and I provided it. That is all.

Maybe you intended your post #62 to be a reply for someone else.

Who leaked it?

The author effectively leaked all the information, including his own name, himself.

This wasn’t a confidential document published in-house by the Navy or anybody else.

Mr. Bissonnette was dealing with people in the commercial publishing world. Who on earth would even think of honor or confidentiality among that group?

I don’t necessarily blame Bissonette for writing it (I don’t know how sacred the nondisclosure act is considered by the SEALS, or by any who have served in the military, which I have not) and I don’t like his name being out in public for the same reasons as you and other posters.

But I would guess a man as savvy as this SEAL chief recognized the kind of turds he is dealing with and has already made his plans in terms of publicity, exposure and his and his family’s security.
