It's a negative bump. We see bumps all the time. They level out.
10 point deficits are rarely made up in two months, unless video of McCaskill setting kittens on fire turns up.

Hopefully the only damage Akin has done is to his own campaign and it did not spread to the other races.
Though it would be an improvement, we cannot get rid of ObamaCare without taking the Senate.

I'm sure Akin is still spouting on mindlessly about that PPP poll taken a few days ago. You can't fix stupid. Kamikaze appears to be his style. What a self centered moron.

McCaskill got what she paid for. Ugh. Didn’t Missouri Republicans WONDER why the liberal Dem McCaskill was buying ads in SUPPORT OF AKIN?
This entire trainwreck is so depressing.
To: nhwingut
LOL. What a shock. Destroy a guy in the media for 5 straight days (including the "conservative" media) and his poll numbers go down. Duh.
If the GOP looses this seat, don't blame Akin. Blame the Hannity, Coulter, Malkin, etc. circular firing squad. With friends like these, who needs enemies?

I have to agree; this has gotten bigger than Missouri. Todd, I sent you money the night you won...but now is time to take one for the team. Drop out.

I think it would be wise for Akin to step down now. But if it goes into next week, and there's another poll then showing him 10+ down--losing ground, not recovering--then Akin MUST withdraw, and he needs to do so BY LABOR DAY, before the Democrat Convention, which would then be all about the "War on Women."
But I don't think Akin, who lives in an evangelical, home-schooling cocoon in West St. Louis County, who thinks he's on a mission from God and this persecution is proof of it, who has had easy elections here in this safe district and hasn't had to speak nimbly in the spotlight--I don't think he's capable of that--I don't think Akin listens to reason.
To: tsowellfan
The entire Republican Party, including the grassroots, has basically told Akin to go to hell, so I doubt it will spread over into any other races. That’s one silver lining at least.
To: Antoninus
Blame the Hannity, Coulter, Malkin, etc. circular firing squad.
If the conservative media/pundits even were responsible for as much as 1 point of the deficit I'd be surprised.

If Akin were really pro-life, then he would do what it takes to ensure that McCaskill doesn't win. As it turns out, Akin is far more pro-Akin than he is pro-life. My view of this matter is that Akin is a good man and a solid conservative that really - REALLY - screwed up with this statement. Given the stakes - control of the Senate and probably affecting the Presidential vote in MO (a key swing state) at a time when it is CRITICAL to get rid of Obama and also get rid of Obamacare, I think that Rep. Akin would do his party, his cause and his nation a great service by withdrawing. Its probably not fair, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles in our immoral, ill-educated, former republic. Akin HAS to look beyond himself, he HAS to take into consideration issues that are orders of magnitude more important than his ambitions. Right now, the single greatest service that he can do for his country is to withdraw. That is regrettable for him and his family but, IMHO, true.

It will be interesting to see if this evens out again as the story dies down. This story is NOT going to die down. The 'Rats are going to whip this into a frenzy at their convention, and are going to keep picking at the scab throughout the entire campaign. Why do you think all of a sudden Sandra Fluke is going to be speaking at their little arty?
They're already tying Akin to Paul Ryan. Akin has done horrific damage - he needs to get out NOW.
To: so_real
For a man of Todd Akin's voting record, it is worth riding this bump out
Anthony Weiner had a stellar liberal record too. Dems wanted no part of him. He was not only forced out, he cost Dems a seat in a far left district.
Voting records and being right on issues are meaningless after you turn yourself into a punchline.
