DENVER (AP) -- There will be more whole grains on school lunch menus this year, along with a wider selection of fruits and vegetables and other healthy options. The challenge is getting children to eat them.
"We don't want healthy trash cans. We want kids who are eating this stuff," said Kern Halls, a former Disney World restaurant manager who now works in school nutrition at Orange County Public Schools in Florida.
At a School Nutrition Association conference in Denver this summer, food workers heard tips about how to get children to make healthy food choices in the cafeteria.

Probably easier to just get a new first lady.
“You didn’t make that sandwich!”
Or worse yet (but more likely in an institutional setting) canned! I can't abide canned vegetables, especially the green ones. Ever notice that sickly brown-gray-yellow-green color canned peas, spinach or green beans are? When they're that color, the flavor and no doubt the nutrition are equally disgusting.
She has campaigned against obesity and has championed health eating.
But when First Lady Michelle Obama met celebrity chef Paula Deen she apparently ate like a horse!
The TV star told the Washington Examiner that she and Michelle had more in common than you might expect.
She said:
“She probably ate more than any other guest I’ve ever had on the show”
“She kept eating even during commercials.”
Thanks for the ping!
Minding OUR freaking business for us is a "likability ploy"??? I can't imagine that making them any more likeable to anyone, even lefties. Well, maybe childless lefties, of which I admit there are many.
They had Hill bake cookies?? I could have TOLD them that was a doomed effort. The only thing having that witch make cookies is going to do is give people creepy thoughts of Hansel and Gretel.
Oh, yes, for Good Housekeeping the first time Bill ran for President.
Oh, OK, that early in the cycle when few knew who or what she was, I can see it. Now it's more like [shudder] "Collectivism -- it's what's for dinner!"
You notice the TV exposes never show the trash cans after lunch at those model schools. They show the kids (acting for the cameras) just loving the crap. Ask them off camera and you get a different story or better check the trash cans for the real story. If they were such great lunches, why do many of them ban the kids from bringing their own lunches? I know as a kid, I would be making a fortune selling black market Twinkies on the sly. Finally, I took peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to school for 12 years. If we were lucky, we got a bologna sandwich every once in a while. We did have fruit and vegetables (from our garden) and the old standby 2 cent milk. Didn’t die, didn’t starve and greatly appreciated the extras when we got them.
PS. Grape jelly most of the time as it was much cheaper than my favorite strawberry jam!
When mooooooooochele stop ordering 10 big macs, 8 large fries, 6 apple pies and a large diet coke as a midnight snack then maybe they will listen, nah they still won’t listen and she is to stupid to know that.
I don't see what the problem is. Just issue a decree that all children will eat their kale or their parents will face criminal charges--with the possibility of losing their custody of the community's cheerdrins.
Must have been in her “headband” epoch. Ah’m not gon’ sit around home bakin’ cookies and bein’ all Tammy Wynette, Stand By Yore Man. Immediately preceding the “Rodham” era, which preceded the “Hillary!” period. When you think about it, the woman has managed to get herself in the history books, and has made herself eminently, thoroughly qualified to be POTUS, G-d forbid.
