Jay Leno on Tonight Show Layoffs: 'We've Been Taken Over By Bain Capital' By Noel Sheppard Created 08/21/2012 - 10:18am
Jay Leno on Monday addressed the recent announcement that there have been numerous layoffs at NBC's Tonight Show forcing him to take a pay cut to save some of his staff.
Feeling the need to take a cheap shot at presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, Leno quipped, Turns out now we've been taken over by Bain Capital" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
Leno began his opening monologue saying, Welcome to the Tonight Show, or as Comcast calls us, The Expendables. That's right.
After some laughter and applause, Leno continued, As you may have heard, our parent company has downsized the Tonight Show. You know, and we've consistently been number one in the ratings. And if you know anything about our network, that kind of thing is frowned upon.
And more bad news, Leno said. Turns out now we've been taken over by Bain Capital. Oh, I can't believe that.
I guess if you're a late night television host, it's imperative that every gag involve Romney somehow.
But Leno wasn't finished.
See, I knew something was going on, he continued. Friday morning, I woke up and there was a peacock head in my bed.
But the good news, said Leno, the Tonight Show, it's still free to get into the Tonight Show. Bad news: its 100 bucks to get out. Okay? So please, have your money ready. Exact change if possible, though.
Can’t say anything linking it to OBAMA and the economy.
He’d wake up to find a crazy MSNBC Klux Klanster with a gun in his bed, instead of a peacock.
YOU JUST DON’T DO THAT if you want to stay employed at NBC
It’s comedy, FGS! Lighten up...
It’s comedy, FGS! Lighten up...
When republicans talk about taking the high road in their campaign style it should include staying away from the late night shows. There is absolutely nothing to be gained there.
I didn’t know he was still on, and frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn! I didn’t even know or care that NBC was still on.
That's debatable.
What an AZZ. I hope he gets to drive off in to the sunset while all his porn and car collections go up in smoke.
Well — there’s one comedy writer’s job who was saved.
No, you stupid jackwagon, it's not "comedy". It's propaganda. Grow up.
Is he still on TV? There are so many other more interesting, entertaining and challenging things to do than watch TV, let alone him or the other ones.
I guess there were no obvious Obama Economy jokes...
Comedy isn't supposed to make you bring up your supper.Although I must admit I *did* hear a laugh track when Harry Reid recently announced that "the word is out".
It`s Johnny Carson`s fault.
What he meant to say was “We were waiting for our loan from the Department of Energy, but the money went to Solyndra”
He’s unwatchable.
IMHO - These late shows are no longer "in". More like People's magazine which Obama thinks is important)...which explains Michelle's visits...Obnoxious b****.
Yes, it is “just” comedy, but it is the fact that the punchline always has the design of injuring Republicans or Conservatives. If it’s “just” comedy, then why don’t they consistently write/tell jokes about Obama, or Democrats, or homosexuals, or Liberals?
The fact is, that the layoffs are more a result of Obama’s policies than anything else and reference to Bain is probably only really known by dedicated political types. The general, Leno-watching TV audience probably has little or no idea what Bain Capital is. So then, really, why do it if nothing more than a bunch of left-wing writers who constantly feel the need to take cheap-shots. These same lefties are so thin-skinned themselves that any joke at their expense is met with street-riots and calls for boycotts.
Yeah, “just” comedy.
