I won’t hate Todd Akin officially unless he refuses to withdraw from the Missouri Senate race. If he does withdraw, honorably sacrificing his personal interests to save the country, it will be time for all good men to rally around Akin as an American patriot.
Akin was one of nine GOP candidates in the primary to challenge Missouri’s left-wing, tax-cheat sitting Democratic senator, Claire McCaskill. McCaskill is Chuck Schumer in a dress. Totally out of step with the good voters of Missouri, her seat should be an easy win for Republicans this year.
Curiously, Democrats ferociously supported Akin in the GOP primary. McCaskill’s supporters spent $2 million to make Akin her opponent and also crossed over to vote for Akin in the Republican primary – and that’s been admitted in The New York Times.
Now we know why. The rape comment was a totally unforced error on a day that should have been a smashing triumph for the Romney-Ryan ticket.
Akin wasn’t asked some out of the blue question no Republican candidate has ever been asked: He was asked the most jejune, obvious question every Republican is asked in any race for any office. How can a Republican not have an answer for: “What about abortion in the case of rape and incest?”

Instead, Akin rambled about “legitimate rape” – violating an ironclad rule of politicians that the word “legitimate” should never appear within 15 yards of the word “rape.” And he talked about the medical possibility of becoming pregnant from a single traumatizing rape.
He’s not a talk radio host. He’s not sitting around shooting the breeze in a college dorm room. This is a politician who should have a clear, nonthreatening answer at the ready for the most cliched question in the MSM’s playbook.

Akin tramped through the biggest pile of dogsh!t he could find with hiking boots, and now people are upset with Coulter for telling him to take his shoes off before he comes in the house.
Why isn’t she calling for Romney to step aside? Why is it only Christian conservatives who get thrown under the bus by their fellow Republicans but not narcissistic, liberal New England RINOs who spend half of their campaign making excuses for not releasing their tax returns, with no possible perceived benefit to the party or the campaign for doing so?
This is the same Ann Coulter that helped give us Romney as the GOP candidate. She is hardly a moral authority on right and wrong. She most certainly is a poor judge of character.
Let the people of Missouri deal with this. It is a State issue. Most her on FR scream about “States Rights.” Well here is a good case for you. The PEOPLE of the state need to decide....that cowardly pols throughout the country.
We had an entire primary full of candidates who could do a better job than Romney has been doing. Ryan, Gingrich and Santorum to name three. Romney was destroyed in the South Carolina debate and primary because he wouldn't agree to releasing his tax returns. And he's failing to learn from his mistake and setting himself up for the exact same catastrophic fall. There is nothing in those tax returns that could be any worse than the fear of the unknown that the Democrats will inculcate up to a fever pitch. And if Romney does eventually release them, how will he justify wasting all this media air time making excuses for himself when he could have been running an actual campaign against Obama?
Sorry xzins, I have to disagree with you on this one. In the primaries, Santorum was hit with essentially the same question and handled it with great aplomb. He pointed out a recent Supreme Court ruling striking down a Louisiana Law making rape a capital crime (under some circumstances). Rick pointed out that the same system of laws that prevents the execution of the criminal, protects the killing of the unborn child, and spoke about how one act of violence should not beget another. All Akin had to do was parrot Rick.
Nowhere did Santorum discuss female biological responses to trauma, "legitimate" rape, etc. For everybody that says Akin was boldly defending life, it seems, in comparison to Santorum's remarks, Akin was the one trying to split hairs, and exploring extraneous detail.
Absolutely, because it was just a simple gaffe of poor word choice. His message was absolutely correct and is exactly what the Republican party is supposed to stand for and believe If someone believes or does something crazy, then that's a problem. But most candidates make a verbal gaffe and have a poor choice of words at some point. Voters don't tend to make their final decision based on that kind of shallow judgment.
And is this why Coulter, Rove, etc., supported Santorum so intensely in the primaries and why the GOP elites didn't at all try to get him to drop out of the race and pave the way for their RINO golden boy?
Not to mention, Santorum was savaged in just the same way by the same kind of people when he tried to make the case against same-sex marriage to college students in New Hampshire. He was ridiculed for talking too much, speaking poorly, whatever. Bottom line is if you offend the sensibilities of liberals and RINOs by speaking out against same-sex marriage or abortion, you will be savaged and torn apart if you don’t make an absolutely unimpeachable case and say every word perfectly. They will look for any opening to tear you down, and that’s what they’re doing here. We should not be going along with them by holding up people on our side to the same impossible standard of perfection.
Say what you will, all Akin had to do was repeat Santorum's response word for word, and this whole issue would be dead in the water.
He needs to be a grown up and step aside. His foolishness went not only national but international.
Coulter, Allen West, Sen. Johnson, Mark Levin, many freepers and others want Akin out for the good of the country. He'll have no funds because the RNCC has pledged to spent no money on Akin's race vs. McCaskill.
So why give them an opening?

Ryan wasn't in the presidential primaries. If Gingrich or Santorum really was a stronger candidate than Romney, they would have beaten him.
You might like them better, you might agree with them more, but they can't be stronger candidates than Mitt if they couldn't beat him.
It is possible that a candidate is more popular outside the party than he is inside, and the losing primary candidate could be a better candidate in the general election, but that's not true of Rick Santorum or of Newt.
Romney may be a poor candidate, but there aren't a lot of independents who would line up to vote for Gingrich.
You can't win if you don't have the candidates.
I don't seem to recall Santorum making any groveling apologies for anything he said the way I heard Akin blubbering on Hannity today. Unapologetic means just that. Akin may have sincerely profound pro-life beliefs; more power to him. But if that' the case, he should have taken the opportunity to dismiss his critics, explain fully what he intended to say, correct his mispoken words and drive home the point he was trying to make.
Akin 98% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union. He had to be taken out. We can’t have conservative representatives.
