Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin's advisers are making preparations to withdraw from the race Tuesday, GOP operative Richard Grenell and RedState.com editor Erick Erickson report. Grenell cited "GOP sources" in his tweet announcing the withdrawal, which has yet to be confirmed by Akin. Akin has been under fire since saying women have biological defenses to fend off pregnancy after a "legitimate rape."

Republican Source: Akin Moving To Withdraw
The controversial candidate is taking concrete steps. UPDATE: Another Republican close to Akin says he’s in the campaign.
Missouri Republican Todd Akin has begun moving toward ending his candidacy after his remarks on rape and abortion provoked a firestorm, a top Republican said.
“Akin is taking concrete steps to withdraw by tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.,” a senior Republican told BuzzFeed, adding that Akin could still change his mind.
But a Republican close to Akin said his position hasn’t changed: He’s still in the race.
Tomorrow afternoon is an important deadline: If he files papers to end his candidacy in Jefferson City tomorrow he can end his candidacy unilaterally; after that, he would have to file an application in court.
Possible Republican replacements, the Republican source said, include three former senators: John Ashcroft, Jim Talent, and Kit Bond. Other names being mentioned include former Ambassador Ann Wagner, who is running for Akin’s now-vacant seat; and Auditor Tom Schweich.
Just saying but lots of dems crossed over to help him win.
He should have been gone by noon today.
Wonder what dark secrets in his personal life?
A degree in “Management Engineering”? What the hell is that?
The Dems in Missouri were instrumental in electing a legitimate corpse (Carnahan (D)) to the governorship a few years ago. Should McCaskill drop out and be replaced by Corpse Carnahan, Aikin would still not stand a chance. That is how much damage he did to himself.
Tell him not one dime. Put another Independent R on the ballot. Force him out. Geez. I’m sorry for the guy but that was just dumb.

Todd Akin: Were Going To Stay In
Benjy Sarlin 3:46 PM EDT, Monday August 20, 2012
Todd Akin told Sean Hannity on Monday that he will not drop out of the Missouri Senate race, despite pressure from Republican officals.
“I’m announcing today that we’re going to stay in,” he said. He added that he was aware of Tuesday’s 5 PM deadline for him to drop out in order for the state party to replace him on the ballot.
Just got shut down at Hanity’s am show. Here’s a guy who claims to be an engineer who takes an unsupported assertion held in some circles as a rule. Which says that if a woman concieves after a rape she concented to the rape. While I don’t know if that has been used as a defence even proposing that idea could be forwarded by some shyster. This guys a loser !
James Watt Interior Sec. under Reagan- Described a Special Advisory panel as "A black, a woman, two jews and a cripple."
Both got trashed.
Nonsense, Mr. Akin, we do not forgive you, and we do not accept your apology.
BTW, if Mr. Akin does not abandon his pointless and damaging candidacy, then notions of being a Dem plant do become worth examining.
(Not saying that this fool is a plant, just that it's possibly worth ruling out via a thorough look-see)
.
If Akin stays it sure is.
polls?
Watt, Reagan's Interior Secretary, on the other hand, wanted to point out the diversity of his advisory panel and said: "I have a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple.
He too was forced out.
“Other names being mentioned include former Ambassador Ann Wagner, who is running for Akins now-vacant seat; “
There’s your possible deal making solution. Have Wagner and Akin switch positions with very conservative pro life Wagner, a woman who would be bullet proof from McCaskill war on women attacks running for the Senate and Akin running for his current seat in the House. Akin might even have a marginal chance of being reelected to his current seat assuming no women live in his district.
It was Earl Butz, Gerald Ford’s Ag secretary. His son, Dave Butz, played football at Purdue where Earl was hired from. Dave was a long-time defensive tackle for the Redskins.
He’s got to go. In Texas, Clayton Williams was 20pts ahead of Ann Richards in the Governor’s race - then he made his rape comment. Something like “If you know you’re going to be raped, you should just lie back and enjoy it.” Even my arch conservative wife voted against Claytie.
That said, I know what he means when he says “Legitimate Rape.” A seventeen year old boy who has sex with his fifteen year old girlfriend is technically a rapist.
“All black people want is loose shoes, a tight p****, and a warm place to sh**.”
Actually, it wasn’t James Watts who said that comment, it was Gerald Ford’s Agriculture Secretary, Earl Butz. He made the remark during the height of the 1976 presidential campaign, and had to resign a few days later. Mr. Butz died on Feb 2, 2008 at the age of 98. He made a few other gaffs during his career, but nowhere near as many as Joe Biden.
Ashcroft, Talent, Bond, Wagner, Schweich--those names have all come to my mind. (I think Ashcroft would be the least likely of that bunch.) It's not a given that it would be one of the two that lost to Akin in the primary, runner-up John Brunner or third-place finisher Sarah Steelman.
