The mainstream media have gleefully pulled the "RAPE" card. We conservatives should recognize this for what this is:
There is no real issue, no real "outrage" over what Akin said. In fact, what Akin said is generally true, albeit inartfully said.
No, what is really going on here is the Left's campaign of distraction. Dangle a shiny object, blanket the airwaves and other media with non-stop "discussion" of this "controversy," and distract voters from real issues.
Here is what Akin should do:
1. Call a news conference. Have a pro-life ob/gyn/physiologist stand up and answer questions on this topic. I.e., tell the world the truth that pregnancy as a result of traumatic rape IS, in fact, RARE.2. Bring Norma McCorvey to this news conference too. Norma, as many of us know, is the original "Roe" of Roe v. Wade. She will tell the story of how she was induced to claim she was gang-raped. This was a lie of the Left, and perjury to the Court. But it worked; and all our states' abortion laws were struck down, partly on the strength of the lie that pregancies resulting from rapes were common. McCorvey will tell the truth about the use of "rape" as a red herring by the Left.
3. Akin must stick to his guns. Stand up, and do it with conviction. Voters admire a candidate who has the courage of his convictions.
And here is what we conservatives should NOT do:
We should NOT join the msm pile on. We should NOT ridicule and condemn Akin like the rabid Left and their henchmen in the msm are doing right now.
You know, we have just seen Paul Ryan show the courage of his convictions in taking on another hot button issue ... Medicare.
How about we take a lesson from Ryan and NOT run away like scared little children every time the Alinsky-ites pull a shiny object out of their bag of sleazy tricks.
LOL Yeah, that's an argument based on real medical practice. Talk about asinine.
Agreed. The comment was stupid on too many levels.
Another relevant exemplary factoid:
Genghis Kahn is an ancestor of 0.5% of the world’s population - and not for being a seductive Don Juan, nor for fluke of his family tree branching. If you get my drift.
And we both know that the MSM would have jumped all over that as well, whining about how Akin wants to force women who have been raped to be forced to carry a child resulting from that rape.
Akin’s comments are indefensible. He needs to go. This Conservative isn’t running to the hills, I am chasing Akin to the hills.
Of course not.
Where in God's name do you get the idea that I, or any other pro-life person, is "ok with rape"?
The truth is:
1. The so-called Justice Department is about the last institution I would trust anymore. It has been obscenely politicized.2. Anybody can make up statistics to try to slant any argument.
3. And this is most important:
"Rape" is a red herring, used dishonestly by Leftists in their argument in order to OVERTURN all states' laws about abortion.
Do you know how states used to deal with this issue, before Roe v. Wade was forced on the entire nation by Judicial fiat?
Before Roe, difficult cases (e.g. medical issues causing a threat to the life of the mother; or rape) went before a medical board of qualified doctors. The doctors on the board would weed out which cases were "real" ... and which were not.
What we have now, as a result of Roe (and its companion case Doe v Bolton), is legalized murder of pre-born children for ANY reason and at ANY time throughout pregnancy.
And guess what? We are almost the only nation in the world that permits this wholesale slaughter of babies, for any reason at all. I believe we share that distinction with Communist China.
Thank you for introducing actual numbers into the discussion, vet7279. Those numbers are based on some percentage of victims receiving emergency contraception, which would lower the pregnancy rate. And a substantial percentage of victims are already using oral contraceptives or perhaps an IUD, so what is the pregnancy rate among non-contraceptive using victims?
It’s 32,000 rape-related pregnancies though, not 1500, isn’t it?
Shhrub, if you know a medical study showing that trauma reduces the conception rate, please provide a link.
Sorry, I haven't been able to take your comments seriously ever since you disgraced yourself by "running to the hills" over the George Zimmerman issue.
It’s not a medical opinion. Unlike suggesting a woman’s body rejects pregnancy due to rape. There are plenty of children of rape who are all the proof I need.
Give it up. You’re boy’s a damn moron.
Which is why you word it. Rape is extremely horrible and unexcuseable, but I feel that the killing of an innocent child is equally, if not more, unexcuseable and should be treated as so.
Let the chips lie where they may. He stated his principles and has not gone against anyone of them.
Your right... I had a 4 year old tugging at me and I was trying to finish my thought... yea right... :)
Nobody is running for the hills, we’re just calling an idiot....an idiot. When Whoopie made her moronic comments, even as a woman, people here called her out on it, now you have a GOP politician who basically pulled out a .45, shot through his foot about 5 or 6 times.
A guy who was clearly in the lead, now that’s questionable and he may have single-handedly revived McCaskill and left the Senate in Democrat control.
Think of it this way: we know there's a relationship between female orgasm and conception. The mechanism for this isn't entirely understood, but it's really not a controversial idea. We can think of rape, therefore, as the opposite of this. There's nothing about pain, stress, trauma and physical rejection that's conducive to insemination the way relaxed, consensual sex is.
Your comment is exactly why conservatives are stereotyped as backwards neanderthals.
There’s not a single peer-reviewed study that supports either your or Akin’s assertions. It was an idiotic comment by him, he should apologize, step down and go away to hopefully never be heard from publicly again. If he stays on, you can get used to seeing Claire McCaskill for yet another 6 years.
I’m entirely on the side of social conservatism, and would probably support and agree with just about all of Akin’s voting record. But good grief, his statement is such a grotesque, garbled mess. It’s just skin-crawlingly offensive to the sensibilities, putting the words “legitimate rape” together and talking about wombs magically shutting down conception (which leaves the implication women who HAVE gotten pregnant via rape are somehow not genuine victims).
If this were the case of the media doing its usual unfair hit-job on a Republican, like they did with George Allen and Trent Lott, I’d agree to stand firm and FIGHT like hell! The GOP invariably wimps out, cowering in fear, and come off like pathetic losers. But, this isn’t that sort of case. Akin did this to himself, with his incredibly dingbat wording. He himself has done damage to the pro-life, social conservative cause with his stupidity. It’s not the media to blame. He might be a good guy on the issues, but the resulting carnage to himself and his Party thanks to his statement merits not his support, but demotion. Down to the rank of buck private, if you ask me.
None of what you said has any basis in science. Women can get aroused during a rape, women can also orgasm during rape. These natural physiological reactions lead to feelings of guilt and even further trauma in those who were raped but do not make the rape any less “legitimate.”
I propose that from here on out, male politicians simply stop discussing the female body in general, it comes back to bite them almost every single time, especially Republicans.
Should have listened to Sarah Palin and voted for Sarah Steelman and you wouldn't have this problem. Or Akin can quit and she can replace him.
Romney took Akin to task, big-time, today for his comments. BTW, beandog, have you seen this thread? Jim Robinson came out for Romney today:

Expect Akin to produce a few medical doctors that will support Akins findings that the female reproductive system shuts down during what the body determines is a legitimate rape.
But social issues weren't important back then...
