New York (CNN) -- Helen Gurley Brown, who created the idea of a modern woman with her book "Sex and the Single Girl" and was editor in chief of Cosmopolitan magazine for three decades, has died at age 90, the Hearst Corporation said Monday. Gurley Brown died Monday morning at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia after a brief hospitalization, the publisher said. "Helen was one of the world's most recognized magazine editors and book authors, and a true pioneer for women in journalism -- and beyond," Hearst Chief Executive Frank Bennack said. It was Gurley Brown who invented today's notion of a modern woman -- one who could have both a successful career and an exciting, satisfying sex life, said Bonnie Fuller, the influential magazine editor who took over at Cosmopolitan when Gurley Brown stepped down in 1997. "Young women today don't realize the legacy that they owe her," Fuller said in an interview with CNN. Gurley Brown's 1962 book "Sex and the Single Girl" encouraged young women to enjoy being single, find fulfillment in work and non-marital relationships with men, and take pleasure in sex, Hearst said. The book was on the bestseller lists for more than a year and became a movie starring Natalie Wood, Tony Curtis, Lauren Bacall, and Henry Fonda.

Cue Powers Boothe in “Tombstone”: “Well, . . . Bye!”
After all, no one will remember who the editor of some print magazine was a few years from now, but they will be her legacy.
Next up: Tina Girlie Brown
RIP Newsweak
Thanks for filling women’s heads with nonsense and helping to make more than one generation a disaster.
Good riddance.
Another man-hating old shrew who polluted women’s brains with penis envy, faux superiority, and unsubstantiated delusions. Less an editor than a fictionalist who happened to be in the right milieu at the right time. Otherwise, she would have ended up writing ad copy in the local shopper.
Had that Pelosi look.
Good riddance to bad rubbish. Thanks to that douche it’s near impossible to find a decent man under the age of 40.
why’s that? Isn’t it the destruction of decent women she’s more responsible for?
Looks like something out of the Scientology Movie.
Thanks to her most women just want to party party party and get drunk drunk drunk.
I think Johnny Pesky’s passing is much more significant.
The destruction of women was immediately followed by the destruction of men and of chivalry and of masculinity. Now the males (I’m loathe to call them ‘men’) much under 40 are almost uniformly emasculated, they’re lazy, they’re immoral, and they’re horribly narcissistic. Try finding a guy under 40 who will help you on with your coat or hold a door open for you...and good luck with that.
Disgusting old woman. Good riddance. She helped to corrupt a nation.
I luuuved Cosmo as a kid...much better boobie shots than National Geographic
I could not agree with you more!!! Thank you for your post. I’m 35 years old, single, and I don’t even try any more for EXAcTLY the same reasons you listed above.

RIP HGB
Well, like Hugh Hefner, she pioneered a niche and made a lifetime out of it. Decide for yourself if that was a good thing or not but at least they were pioneers.
The two things kind of go together.
Think of the world these guys have come into: there is nothing special about being a man, nothing that a man can do that a woman can't do (and possibly better). When you're told that all your life and everybody assumes it to be true, then the logical thing is to kick back and let the girls do it, then. Why should I bust my keister over anything? An understandable attitude, imo.
This won't be fixed easily. It might not be fixed without a complete demographic turnover, if even that would do it.
