DHS Orders 750 Million More Rounds Of Ammo
The Alt-Market.com ^ | 13 August, 2012 | various

The federal government, specifically the Department of Homeland Security, is buying up huge amounts of ammunition and there seems to be no end in sight. Again, this is nothing new as the DHS has refused to explain their purchase of 450 million hollow points and has ordered "up to" 650-750 million rounds of ammo and also seems to be looking for more weapons as well.

An additional 750,000,000 round requirement on top of a previous 450,000,000 round government contract has got to have an effect on the ammo market. Seems pretty risky for any established bidder.

The contract obligates the bidder to deliver up to the contracted quantity at the contracted price, but does not obligate the government to actually buy at any particular time.

The net effect would be to give the government the ability to suck up all available amounts of the specified ammo types any time they want to, thus effectively removing them from the market to civilian purchasers. The bidders would also be required to maintain enough inventory to meet orders that might never come.

Yup, who'd want to sign a contract like that for five years, except maybe some unscrupulous crony of Obama or someone with dependable connections on the inside who'd ensure demand occured favorable to the vendor.

Based on those I know, it IS only the veterans I trust, older or not, who will have our backs and actually fight back.

It’s about 5000 rounds per DHS employee (1b rounds, 200k employees).

You can hold your terlet fire with this bit of reality. There are over 300 million privately owned firearms in this country. That’s more , incidentally, than all the rest of the world combined, including everyone else’s militaries. Just for the sake of comparison I’m gonna assume that every one of the 300 million guns has at least a 20 round box of ammo to go with it. That would be 6 billion rounds of private ammo——and that, in turn, would be around 2,000 rounds each that every federal employ including the military, would be facing if someone in Washington gets really stupid.——————————————They will try to disarm the rest of the entire world before they try it here for this exact reason. Chuckie Schumer and all his friends understand this. Obamuzzie may not but he’ll be leading his own parade by himself if he gets clumsy. Heavy handed federal krap will not be tolerated past the first incident-—remember Ruby Ridge and Waco for instance. The Fedz were about one more gunshot away, in each case, from getting their skins dried on the line.

I wonder how many armed DHS employees there are. At the height of the war in Iraq, the military was shooting 5.5 million small arms rounds per month. It will take over 11 years of sustained fire similar to that of the military in Iraq for DHS to run out of ammo. It looks like the DHS is either fielding Obama’s Army or reducing the availability of ammo for civilians, or both.

It's time to further stock up on reloading supplies.

And don’t even think to ask what our disillustrious House is doing about this since they control (supposedly) the funding for these sorts of shenanigans.

I totally agree. Time to update the inventory. I know I need more bullets to at least match the number primers on hand.

“”Most of the .357 Sig is for the TSA. I was unaware that TSA was armed at all, let alone armed with that round.””

But they might stumble upon a few arms in that caliber during the the confiscations.

Since the feds seem determined not to enforce immigration laws, it’s hard to imagine any good reason they need all this, even over a 5 year period. On the bright side, if we survive, we can buy it as surplus after the national bankruptcy.

Sounds like maybe obama and holder forgot to include enough ammo with the guns they gave to the Sinaloa Cartel.

DHS is soaking up supply.

It appears to be an OPTION to soak up the supply. Guaranteed purchase of only 1,000 rounds a year but if they implement the options, they will lock up the supply.

No doubt acquiring the ammo as a barter item to trade for dental work.

The fact is that there needs to be ordnance to fuel the civil war lead by Obama’s Brown shirts against Red States.

It will start in Arizona with Obama/Holders reconquista drug cartel guerillas, who they have been arming since 2008.

The military has trained up quite a few of them in the last 10 years or so. I’m sure they can find more than a few willing to work for DHS.

Then again, there are millions in the populace able to take a deer at 100 yds and better.

I totally agree. Time to update the inventory. I know I need more bullets to at least match the number primers on hand.

Serious question ... I am trying to figure out what my inventory level should be ... Some background: I have on order, should be shipped this week, enough 5.56 brass to top my inventory off to wear out my M4gery's barrel thru multiple reloads. The M4 is recently built, so it has a new barrel. I am figuring 25k to 30k rounds to wear out the barrel. I also have a M16A2 clone build in process. The question is ... how much powder, primers and bullets should be in my inventory?

Anyone can chime in on this. I am worried about being able to purchase components at a reasonable price. I am set for brass. I know what primer I am going to use. I am in the process of developing a load to match my weapons. So the equation is limited to the powder and bullet. I have tried to build my weapons so they will be effective with green tip ammo (so I can scavenge ammo if the SHTF), but I know I can get more accuracy through brass prep and reloading processes that are better than the military suppliers would use. Interesting note, my brief reading of the DHS RFP is that they are asking for .223 ammo, not higher pressure 5.56. They aren't buying green tip. My M4 handles both, in fact I have alternated .223 and 5.56 rounds in the same magazine. The weapons chew thru anything, but accuracy suffers a bit. I am guess I expect perfection.
