Mitt Romney has had a tough couple of weeks on the campaign trail -- and it shows in the latest Fox News poll. After a barrage of campaign ads, negative news coverage of his overseas trip and ongoing talk about his tax returns, Romneys favorable rating and standing in the trial ballot have declined. As a result, President Obama has opened his biggest lead since Romney became the presumptive Republican nominee.
The president would take 49 percent of the vote compared to Romney's 40 percent in a head-to-head matchup if the election were held today, the poll found. Last month, Obama had a four percentage-point edge of 45 percent to 41 percent. This marks the second time this year the president has had a lead outside the polls margin of sampling error.
Obamas advantage comes largely from increased support among independents, who now pick him over Romney by 11 percentage points. Some 30 percent of independents are undecided. Last month, Obama had a four-point edge among independents, while Romney had the advantage from April through early June.
There was also an uptick in support for Obama among women, blacks and Democrats.

Every real conservative I know of is already voting and supporting Romney because they know this isn’t about winning an election but far more about losing everything.
Im just sick.
Thanks to the Republicans Obama was allowed to give bazillions of dollars to welfare cheats, his cronies in business, ethnic groups, unions, the unemployed and a whole host of other category of potential democrat voters while the GOP helps Romney buy the nominee position so that the “special people” in our country can continue to flourish financially with the help of a special one of “their kind” in the oval office.
They blew it with McCain and never looked back to see why. Now, the set the stage to blow it with Romney.
The fact is that there are more people and businesses on the government nipple (either directly or indirectly) than ever before and the GOP has allowed it by going along with any program or bill that is politically correct.
The end has come. Our freedoms have been lost and we need to face it and the Constitution is simply a piece of political toilet paper.
for the record..... Bret reported the poll over sampled democrats by 9%
He was effectively saying....... don’t believe it
Romney makes me sick with his horrible campaign.
Does anyone think Christie, Newt, Santorum, Bachmann, or ron paul would be so silent in the face of this crap we get from thugbama?
Romney seems like he is throwing this election so far.
you can’t run a panzie against a chicago ghetto street thug.
I’ll vote for mittens, but damn is this campaign a joke so far.
Patience........
His money is tied up till after the convention. When the time is proper, there will be such an outpouring of destroy obama that the lapse of response in August will not even be remembered.
It is August...... nothing happens in August except the start of wars
Buck up, Bucky. Just because depressing polls are conducted and announced by allegedly-conservative Fox doesn't make them accurate.
Remember, we are now in the pre-election Goebbel's alternate universe. It will be an unprecedented nightmarish time-frame of streaming propaganda.
Along with the constant stream of lies emanating from the mouths of Obama and his fascist henchmen, we are in for a carefully-planned period of disinformation which includes unceasing bombardments of skewed polling results.
Between now and election day phoney polls will play an enormous part in the attempt to sway public opinion and cause demoralization with the ranks of Obama opponents.
However, be not dismayed and remain strong.........the end is nigh only for the Fascist-in-Chief and his evil brown-shirts.

I still think it's a toss up between Romney and McCain.
I hope so because so far I am disgusted beyond words.
After what we have endured the last 4 years under these chicago thugs and criminals I have better attack line than mittens on why obama must go.
Romney is like the rocky 3 v clubber lang first fight from what i can tell.
It's a shame we have people like John Boehner in the House that makes it so we hope the good guys don't move up or move on to better places.
You are right, we should not be hoping guys like Paul Ryan stay where they are because we have to counter balance the liberals from our own side in the House.
"Repeal John Boehner as Speaker of the House" needs to be a required campaign promise of any Conservative running for Congress in 2012.
we are now in the pre-election Goebbel’s alternate universe.
Now, we have over 40 years of absolute political “brain washed” political zombies who will only vote Democrat/Leftist and nothing will change their programmed minds.
I believe the polls are correct, if not a little bit too conservative in their canvassing.
Don’t be down, its only the left and the far right fringenuts that are screaming “all is lost, give up now”. Sort of like Tokyo Rose.
Think about it, getting a call from some pollster is a golden opportunity to do do either of two things, 1- mislead for self entertainment or 2 - mislead for political purposes. Polling is not real, its akin to a video game.
If we watch closely and read further than headlines, its becoming quite clear that more than us Tea Party conservative types are unhappy with nobama. Beleive history, no President has been re-elected with similar bad economic record. Nobama can give excuses til the cows come home it does not remove his responsibility. Nobama can smear Romney with everything in the book and it still does not change his record. Like Slick said “its the economy, stupid”.
All these dirt untrue ads are a clear sign the nobama camp is desparately trying to re-energize “their” voter base who probably will not vote against nobama, but probably will just not vote.
"Gee willikers, Beav! That sure is a mean ad!"
And that's pretty much the campaign.
Why are you getting sick, this is NONSENSE folks..
Obama has a hard top limit of 42-43% period, that’s it. Any poll showing this guy over low to mid 40s is fundamentally flawed. I am not saying the folks doing the polling are trying to deceive, or have nepharious motives, but the idea this guys going to get anywhere near 49% of the vote, let alone his oponent would only get 40 is just wrong.
To get these sorts of numbers, you have to not only oversample democrats, but overrepresent geographical areas and or other factors.
I know lots of people say this including Rush Limbaugh but it is frankly stupid. Unless you're calling the people who voted for Romney "the GOP elite" I don't know how "the GOP elite" stuck us with Romney.
It is registered, not likely voters, so the absolute numbers are almost certainly inaccurate.
However, it does show Obama improved from their last poll. I believe that is accurate.
Romney is concerned that responding to the crap would get him “off message” which is about the economy and Obama’s policies. I think it’s valid concern.
What they need to do is find a way to be a little creative and include in statements about what a mess the economy etc. some counter punches on the other stuff. Something like “He has to lie about me because he doesn’t want to talk about the economy”. They seem to lack any sense of how to do that.

Please - Romney “concern” is being viewed as him being a pussy and a joke.
I’m beyond disgusted with this farce of a campaign so far.
What surprises me about these people is the hostility they exhibit. They seem to take it as a personal affront that some conservatives won't vote for Romney because of Romney's politics. There are no good choices for conservatives in the candidates of the two major parties. It is a tough choice. Should a conservative vote using pragmatism or principles? I've made my choice, others can make theirs. Respect my choice and I'll respect your choice, even if I don't agree with it.
