Immigrants lag behind native-born Americans on most measures of economic well-being — even those who have been in the U.S. the longest, according to a report from the Center for Immigration Studies, which argues that full assimilation is a more complex task than overcoming language or cultural differences.
The study, which covers all immigrants, legal and illegal, and their U.S.-born children younger than 18, found that immigrants tend to make economic progress by most measures the longer they live in the U.S. but lag well behind native-born Americans on factors such as poverty, health insurance coverage and homeownership.
The study, based on 2010 and 2011 census data, found that 43 percent of immigrants who have been in the U.S. at least 20 years were using welfare benefits, a rate that is nearly twice as high as native-born Americans and nearly 50 percent higher than recent immigrants.
The report was released at a time when both major presidential candidates have backed policies that would make it easier to immigrate legally and would boost the numbers of people coming to the U.S.

Years ago, before all this political correctness was applied to immigration and immigrants, the persons who sponsored an immigrant had to make a guarantee the proposed immigrant would not become a charge on the state, a euphemism for going on welfare. This system worked well until Ted Kennedy broke up all the rules and rewrote the immigration code back in those halcyon days of 1965.
The rewrite on the code opened the doors to letting in many more non-European minorities, and set the stage for the ending of the white majority in the United States. This was thought to be a “good thing” by the liberals of the time, as they already had managed to push through most of the “Great Society” program of LBJ, and they needed new bodies to make the program work.

I sponsored some of my wife’s relatives (she’s a citizen) to come here legally. It took 10+ years. I am legally responsible for keeping them over the poverty level as far as income until they become citizens or have worked 10 years. Yes, they can get some benefits, but I think that is state, not Fed.
That said, I bet they could get some bennies because the system is so screwed up.
Romney commented on cultural differences between Palestinians and Israeli Jews - correctly. I wonder what the cultural differences are between immigrants who become Americans and those foreigners who are simply parasites.
My wife is a UK citizen. She was recruited to the US as a Professor at a US medical school (her employer sponsored her), and she does basic research in liver immunology. She has a PhD from King’s College in London and has earned a good salary since she came to the US. Still, she spent 6 years and $10,000+ in legal fees just to get her green card.
So why is becoming a citizen harder for her than for a deadbeat from Somalia?
I have friends from Nigeria who tell the same story - IF you’re an illiterate goat herder from the Muslim north, you get right in. BUT if you’re a Christian with good career skills from the south the US doesn’t want you.

Strangely enough, nothing is mentioned of the demographics of these immigrants.
All I know is that this honky immigrant from Europe and all his fellow crackers that arrived on that liberty ship in 1956 did very well.

Obama buddy Deval Patrick says he isn't going to do anything that "makes vulnerable people beg for their benefits". So apparently tattoos and booze are entitlements taxpayers are, by default, forced to finance.
A defiant Gov. Deval Patrick finally signed a welfare reform bill into law yesterday — only to say he won’t enforce key parts of the measure, drawing the wrath of lawmakers working to crack down on widespread abuses of the system.
Patrick, in a letter to lawmakers, said it’s “not feasible” to ban EBT purchases of frills such as liquor, cigarettes, lottery tickets and tattoos — and that “this administration will not enforce what cannot be enforced with respect to the use of EBT cards."

Must be me, but all the immigrants I know have engineering degrees and make much more than the national average.

If it were up to me, we would go back to the immigration policies we had in the 60s, before we started massive immigration to pay for Social Security. Now we can’t pay for the Social Security the Immigrants will get, not after paying for their welfare, their educations, their housing and medical expenses. All further immigration should be based entirely upon America’s best interest. Everyone else who just wants to come live here should have to show means of support, and post a bond that will cover their deportation, should they need our social services. There are plenty of other countries for people to immigrate to, and should we get four more years of Obama, there will be plenty of better countries.

My wife is a British subject too. It was easier for me to become a legal resident of the UK then it would have been for her to become an American resident.
I’ve often told her that it would be better if she booked a flight to Mexico, then cross the border on foot right onto Americas red carpet.
