Susita Site Yields Surprises
Arutz Sheva ^ | 7/8/12 | Gil Ronen

The 13th year of Haifa University's archeological digs at the Susita site just east of the Sea of Galilee (Kinneret) has yielded several surprises, including what experts believe is a portrait of a local man from the 3rd century CE, carved into a basalt gravestone.

Susita – as it is known in the Aramaic version – was originally known by the Latin name Hippos. Both names refer to horses, although the reason for this name is not known. It was destroyed by the earthquake of 749 CE.

Archeologist Dr. Michael Eisenberg explained that the "Susita man" rock was found in the course of a pre-season dig, at the site of a small fortress guarding the main entrance to the road that led up to Susita. Eisenberg is certain that the carved rock was removed from its original location at a cemetery, where it had served as a gravestone, and used to build the fortress.

"This is a simple work of art by a folk artist that fits the late Roman period, around the 3rd century CE," he estimated. "The portrait of the first Susita resident in our hands and we hope to be able to decipher his name soon, too," he added, referring to the Greek letters that were engraved next to the portrait.

Archeologists also found what they say was the town's garbage dump, which they say will offer them a glimpse into the residents' day-to-day lives, and especially their diet. "Garbage can't be fooled," said Eisenberg.

OK. You’re right. From now on I’ll manually change all dates on archaeology articles originating in Jewish publications to the date from the creation of the world. 3rd Century CE would be between 3760 and 3860. That way I won’t violate any PC sensibilities, or even acknowledge a chronology based on the advent of Jesus or the eras preceding or after. Only then the more scientifically-minded freepers would debunk my assertion that the Earth is less than six thousand years old. On second thought, I’m lazy. I’ll just leave the articles be as they are, and if you don’t like it, lump it.

Susita was one of the towns known as the Decapolis, whose residents saw themselves as culturally Greek, as opposed to the surrounding communities, whose inhabitants were Jewish, Phoenician and Nabatean.

Where are the Palestinians?

Why do you think this portrait was buried under stones? The Palestinians threw them.

Oh, I’m so happy that they switched from that awkward “Anno Domini” (AD) to the much more pleasant “Christian Era” (CE) and “Before Christian Era” (BCE).

But it really doesn’t matter what they call it, the years are still counted from the life of Jesus Christ, before and after.

They can run, and they can hide, but God sees their folly anyway.

Dear TheOldLady:

I notice that you have either been zotted or suspended, and the last post you made prior to this action was the one to which I am responding. Your posting history does not suggest anything trollish to me, and I myself made no complaints against you. Imho, this action taken against you was excessive. You are entitled to your beliefs and I to mine, and we try to discuss our differences here maturely, and I think that the post in question, while not to my liking, did not warrant a zotting/suspension, and I am sorry that the moderators did that.

It is easy to unintentionally start a shouting match about religion here, and unless a poster has a history of deliberately and repeatedly looking for a fight, I tend to let it all roll over me and forget it.

I hope that whoever complained against you, or whatever moderator acted on his/her own initiative, bears that in mind. Again, sorry that this happened. It was none of my doing, and I disagree with it.

“won’t violate any PC sensibilities”

The PC thing here is the anti-Christian use of CE while plagiarizing a dating system. Using the Jewish dating system would be more honest or they could go with an actual scientific one, BP.

Given that the actual Palestinians (Philistines) were Greek, it would be interesting to find out if these people were descended from them.
