Romney on Chick-fil-A: That’s not something that’s part of my campaign
Hot Air ^ | August 3rd, 2012 | Allahpundit

Posted on 08/03/2012 3:33:17 PM PDT by Third Person

Via the Examiner, I understand why he punted here. His retort to Reid’s tax-evasion smear last night was that it’s an obvious, grotesque attempt to hand the media a new distraction from Obama’s record. He just got back from a foreign policy trip/photo op that was also submerged in distractions, most notably his Olympics comments in London and his aide’s “kiss my ass” comments to the press in Poland. He’s just begun pushing a more positive message keyed to his biography to convince undecideds that he’s up to the job. The last thing he wants right now is another distraction wrapped around his ankles, particularly on a day when the news is about the latest disappointing jobs report.

Given that the Chick-fil-A question here was packaged with another question about Bachmann and the Muslim Brotherhood, he had two dilemmas. One: If he weighs in on either, that’s a story and now suddenly he’s being asked about gay marriage and Islamism instead of jobs for the middle class. If you want a candidate who’s more interested in culture-war issues than economic growth, try Romney 2008. Two: If he weighs in only on Chick-fil-A, the easier of the two topics, then there’ll be a separate story on why he specifically ducked the question about Bachmann and he’ll hear it from her supporters and from the media for dodging. He probably figured he was better off playing it safe (as usual) and passing on both. Hey — if you wanted a nominee who’d inch out on the highwire to answer any question put to him, you should have nominated Newt.

Still, hurts to know that even a tool like Mike Bloomberg is capable of offering a righteous answer on CFA when called on to do so:

Critics trying to shut Chick-fil-A because its CEO opposes gay marriage are undermining the very essence of the Constitution, Mayor Bloomberg declared today in a stirring defense of the embattled fast food chain.

“It isn’t the right thing to do and it isn’t what America stands for,” Bloomberg said on his weekly WOR radio show. “And those people who don’t like (Chick-fil-A) don’t understand their rights were protected by people who took a difficult position in the past and stood by it. They stood up so everybody else would be free.”…

“What’s for sure is that government cannot in the United States, in America, under the Constitution, be run where you have a litmus test for the personal views of somebody when they want something in the commercial world.”

Barney Frank also managed to say a word against government discrimination towards Chick-fil-A. Ah well. Maybe Mitt will get another question about this tomorrow and say something about free speech even if he ends up avoiding the subject of gay marriage. Speaking of which, enjoy the second clip below. Not sure what’s gotten into Stewart lately, but this is a rare week during which most of his big hits have been at the expense of Democrats.

Exit quotation via Mediaite: “Pretty sure you can’t outlaw a company with perfectly legal business practices because you find their CEO’s views repellant. Not sure which amendment covers that, but it’s probably in the top 1.”

“I was never going to vote for him in the first case so it certainly doesn’t affect my vote.”

Ain’t that the truth.

A second term for Obama will be a direct cause for either a second Civil War or a second American Revolution-—with unintended consequences for ALL of us.

ROTFLMAO

It's all over but the shouting, Honest Ape waged war against the sons of the Founders and we are now slaves to the Washingtonians.

Reality sucks.

Well, maybe he needs to say that once again now that Dan needs his support. And actions speak louder than words. Where are the pix of Mittens and his staff eating there?

He's a coward, a two faced douchebag, and a serial liar who doesn't have a conservative bone in his body and will say or do anything to get elected, then govern like a leftist.

I disagree with the part about him willing to say or do anything to get elected. He will not speak out in favor of the Chick-Fil-A owner even though clearly that would help him be more popular with the vast majority of people. Romney is extremely liberal on social issues, and he would find it personally abhorrent to speak out against the gay activists. He enabled them to get gay marriage in Massachusetts, a massive breakthrough for their cause which gave immeasurable help to their movement and led directly to one major political party backing national gay marriage. The only reason Romney doesn't seem more liberal to more people is because Obama's moved the bar on the left side of the aisle so far to radicalism and communism. Both parties moving further and further left puts the country in an untenable situation that will mean the end of America as a shining light of freedom to the world. Romney is not the guy who will save America. He is part of the problem.

What BS to compare Mittens, who isn’t even the nominee yet, to Sarah Palin who has been on the national stage for four years and raises money for conservatives and helps them win their elections by endorsing them.

Half of the country is standing in front of Dairy Queen with ice cream dripping down the fronts of their shirts right now..and they barely know who Mitt Romney is...

Entourage, press, cameras. let’s save that for someone who might really get it.

If Mittens wanted to stop at Chick this week, he could have done so,..quietly and without fanfare.

Instead he says that it isn’t part of his campaign.
A more appropriate response would have been to repeat that he stops there all the time!!! followed by a full shout out for Cathy and his principles.
What’s that I hear... More crickets?

This election is about the economy and Obama’s failure in spite of getting multiple stimlus packages as requested. To get side-tracked with gay, abortion, or other democrat party disctactions using the social agenda arena would have been stupid.

To ignore any issue is stupid. Every vote counts and different voters will be motivated by different issues. The Democrats have a chance to win by building a coalition of many different interest groups who are motivated by different issues. They're not a single-issue party.

Conservatism has at least 3 planks, all vital to the movement, economic, social and national security. To hinge the election on only one factor is an unnecessary risk, since conditions on that factor may change by the time November comes around. You don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Bottom line is this is not about strategy for Romney. He is listening to his heart. He is a big city elite liberal whose justification for being a Republican has always been that he is "slightly" more interested in lowering taxes than the nearest Democrat. He'd probably lie about more of these issues if he could, but his charisma is extremely low which makes it difficult to be a good liar, so he knows he's better off saying nothing at all than to try to lie about his true feelings on these issues. And he obviously can't say how he really feels without driving conservatives away in droves.

Since when do liberals "own" the issues of gay marriage and abortion? Arguably it's conservatives who own those issues. They are winning issues for our side. To be "neutral" on those issues is to simply throw away votes. Obama's social-issue-oriented base will be fired up but ours won't. Romney would never avoid discussing those issues if he believed what we believe. Because he doesn't, it's a mine field wading into them for him because he can be caught in a lie or be caught accidentally being too honest.

There is nothing we can do to "fix" him and make him better on these issues. He is who he is. But let's please not delude ourselves into thinking this is the right way to run a campaign. We certainly don't want other Republican candidates following his example.

In what primary did Romney win a majority of the votes?

Son of a gun got the most delegates—how did that happen exactly?

I don’t believe he got a majority of the votes cast in the primaries. He got a plurality. The rest of the candidates, together, beat him. Unfortunately, they split the vote, allowing Romney to get the nomination.

In what primary did Romney win a majority of the votes?

According to the Wall Street Journal, it was the Texas primary that put him over the top (May 29).

That wasn’t my question. In most of the primaries, he didn’t get a majority of the vote. He “won” with a plurality, meaning most GOP voters wanted somebody else.

He can make stand and say what is right but yet again when it comes ot social issues many on our side become cowardly

Completely irrelevant to this thread, but I did want to thank you publicly for keeping ‘Fahrenheit 451’ in the public view. I never paid much attention to it and your references have put it on my ‘to read’ list.

You are quite welcome. Keep in mind also that the recently deceased Ray Bradbury was also a big time conservative who loved Reagan and despised Clinton and Obama. Google it.

Mountain Mary, Please go back to DU, they miss you there.

Why, you ignorant n00b. How dare you address a real conservative that way?

If you had the slightest idea what conservatism was really about, you'd recognize that Mitt Romney bears only the barest superficial difference to any liberal Democrat in Washington.

Tuck tail and vote for him if you must, but DO NOT come in here berating those with real spines and core convictions about their disgust for that piece of crap nominee the GOP-e has foisted upon us.
