As we wait for Mitt Romney to pick his running mate in the next few weeks, the last successful GOP running mate has been privately advising the current GOP nominee and the head of his VP search committee, Beth Myers. Cheney believes that the #2 slot has to be filled with someone ready to take over the top job on Day 1 and that John McCain flunked that test in 2008. In an interview with ABC News Jonathan Karl, Cheney called the selection of Sarah Palin a mistake:

They picked Tom Dewey twice, even though he proved himself a loser the first time around. And before that, they picked Wendell Willkie and Alf Landon. You don't have to be Einstein to figure out why the GOP has been dubbed the stupid party.
Ditto and bump that!
Giving ABC an interview brings him down a notch in my book. And lambasting Palin takes him off the list.
You're kidding me.
By that standard, Mitt's not even close to being qualified to run for president. He'd better get his hiney back to Massachusetts and serve another term as Governor, then spend a term in the US Senate before trying his hand at presidential politics again.
It continues to amaze me that some on our side set such a high bar for experience in front of Sarah Palin, and NO other politician. Let me remind you that Sarah Palin had twenty years of experience in public service when she ran for VP. Twenty years.
Not only that, of the four individuals running in the 2008 race, she was the ONLY one of them who possessed any executive experience. She was more qualified than the lot of them to be president.
IMO it just shows what we already know—their complaints about Sarah Palin have nothing to do with her level, degree, or type of political experience.
“Hey DICK, want to win??? How about giving us conservatives top of the ticket instead of arch RINOs like Romney.”
How many elections does it take to figure out that the Cheneys, McCains, Bush’s, Palins are NEVER going to ‘give’ us a conservative????
How many??? When you all stop drinking the GOP Kool aid, that’s when.
There are a lot of shades to this argument. Sarah Palin was not ready. On the other hand, the other three of the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates all had even less relevant experience.
A nice collection of points nicely made!

She is the only Conservative that has been able to make an impact directly on the pop culture... you know... that thing that is destroying our Republic.

Yeah, imagine the difference in America today with an Alaskan Corruption fighter in office instead of the Chichago Politics as usual Thugocracy we have endured to date.
Dick Cheney is WRONG! I would never have voted for McCain WITHOUT Sarah Palin being on the ticket.

Same here. And I suspect there are thousands like us.
There was a time when I just loved Cheney — I even have a cat named after him. So sad to find out what he really is....
Thanks for posting that. Newt supported Sarah and Sarah and Todd supported Newt. The establishment have gone out of their way to nuke them both. Sarah is out stumping for tea party candidates and they perceive her as a huge threat. They fear the tea party and anyone connected with it.
There were many dads over in Vietnam...
The GOPe is getting ready to blow another one with Mitt. I would think he would be smart enough to latch on to the excitement at the Beck rally last night, but he doesn’t need the tea party. He will go ahead and pick someone more vanilla than him, Portman is my guess, and not have to worry about being out done by his running mate. Yawn.
Simply disagreeing with Obama will NOT get the job done. But he cannot hear anyone except Rowe.
Hey DICK, methinks that new heart of yours came from a PDSer.
Go back to the shotgun range and practice!!!
my my how times change...that woulda got ya banned her in 2003..
the naysayers then were more right than we knew...i saw folks here question Bush from jump street
i didn't till amnesty really...
And another thing....DICK....when you and your GOPe clique were out screwing the conservative base and protecting your little fiefdoms, Palin has been working the grass roots and rallying the base.
Ohhhhh, that’s right, She’s been getting a new batch of CONSERVATIVES into the arena....ahhhh, I see. She’s starting a new club and your friends ain’t in it.
and only Levin actually smacked Romney about
it showed how disassociated GOP leadership is ..by and large...from it's base
this is how parties collapse historically in time
Why does Dick Cheney feel it necessary to attack Sarah Palin?.

I’m a fan of the former vice president but this isn’t classy. And he’s also wrong. John McCain ran a terrible campaign; the Bush-Cheney administration had become very unpopular with the American people, including many Republicans; and the Bush-Cheney administration was every bit as activist when it came to expanding domestic spending and government activism as the Nixon administration. The continuing attacks on leaders of grassroot conservatives by the Republican establishment, especially former Bush administration officials, need to end now. They got their nominee and they need to focus on Obama.
