Dick Cheney has some advice for Mitt Romney on choosing a running mate: Don't pick another Sarah Palin.
In his first interview since receiving a heart transplant in March, Cheney told ABC News, that John McCain's decision to pick Palin as his running mate in 2008 was "a mistake" - one that it is important from Romney not to repeat.
It's subject on which Cheney has some unique experience. He helped Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush lead their vice presidential searches and, of course, served as vice president for eight years. He's also privately offered some advice to both Romney and Beth Myers, who is leading Romney's search for a runningmate, on the process.
Cheney would not comment on what he told Romney and Myers, but he was harsh in his assessment of McCain's decision to pick Palin.
"That one," Cheney said, "I don't think was well handled."
"The test to get on that small list has to be, 'Is this person capable of being president of the United States?'"
Cheney believes Sarah Palin failed that test.
"I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. She - attractive candidate. But based on her background, she'd only been governor for, what, two years. I don't think she passed that test
of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake."

Like your posts, it was all unnecessary.
The Republic is on its deathbed and the most brilliant thing to be said is Sarah was a mistake. Way to go Dick.
Thanks for those pics. Talk about a girl on girl crush....but not in “that way”!!!!
I just LOVE my Sarah!
PING!
Here you come with all those EXCELLENT, pictures of Sarah.
Where did you find those!?
5,6,7,8 and 9 are especially wonderful! How does she take so many great photos!?
Thank You Mesta, you and all those Great Palinista FReepers have helped make may day!
Has nothing to do with any superior intellect.
We’re talking about something obvious—the fact that politics is corrupt.
It doesn’t take a superior intellect to know that politicians are far more likely to be cheaters than to be honest men and women.
So the point here is: when it comes to the two most important qualities for a politician to have—honesty and courage—Sarah Palin has more than the vast majority of all politicians.
After looking at all those pictures, many of them taken since 2008, maybe the mistake Cheney was referring to is they should have held her until this term to run.....Still will go that ABC misquoted him or took it out of content,
I don't like hearing or saying it, but Cheney's GOP-Elitism is showing here.
Now they SHOULD have ran with her this term because That would have gotten the Conservative base solidified and showed a sharp contrast to the average hard working American to Ubama.
As for the "Moderates" she would scare off, they can go eff themselves, they are Democrats anyway, they just don't want to admit that they want only "Moderate" Tyranny.
Thank you MKJessup. I liked your comments too.
Still haven’t heard any examples of what it is that people supposedly believe about the daily tasks of a president that Sarah Palin could not do.
Actually with Todd the Union member, their small business experience, their connection to hockey (MI does like them)Bristol covering the single moms with her reality show, the connection she has with family who have a disabled child; She certainly covers more of the “moderates” then any of the other candidates mentioned.
You describe Romney perfectly, but why do you ascribe those attribute to Palin?
But as Rush says, "Liberals are Liberals first" and I add to that "whether are Republicans, Democrats or Independents".
I have no doubt Sarah would attract all the real, hard working, decent folks around the country, regardless of their Political Party membership and curb stop Ubama in the election.
However the GOP-E obviously felt differently and in the end, I believe that may cost them the GOP, if we can't take it back from them, we should let it die and build a new around those same real, hard working, decent folks around the country, with Sarah leading the way.
Other wise all we have is two left of Center parties, one Socialist and one Outright Communist.
Don’t confuse the GOP-e cultists on freerepublic with facts. They might “sprain” their brains.
What timing. I think I was polite.
She has more to offer, more value now then she did in 2008. She, unlike many others mentioned, has name recognition. Yes they've attacked her, but after each attack she has stood taller then before.
Since we are in the process of introspection, lets assign the major blame accordingly.
You don't need to be respectful of these two-bit monkeys who are throwing stones at you. They have taken this country into a lot of troubled waters. If they were ship captains, they would have been out of work and thoroughly disgraced.
Please feel free to point out their records. You don't need to hold back for the sake of the party, as they don't feel the same way. You don't need to be respectful of them either.
Thanks onyx.
McCain’s choice of Palin dropped out of the blue, and re-energized his campaign.
And no one on his campaign staff appears to have been in favor of it, and undermined it and her.
Her two years as governor of Alaska, fending off frivolous lawsuits which just by coincidence followed her success against oil company, uh, influence over Alaska’s gov’t, is more than a match for Zero’s professional political experience.
Cheney’s only right in that the selection wasn’t handled well.
