Obama And Romney Are Wrong: Outsourcing Is Actually America At Its Best
Forbes ^ | 07/28/2012 | Harry Binswanger

Posted on 07/28/2012 4:02:37 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are currently fighting over who is the more patriotic. Obama slams Romney for having outsourced jobs to China during his Bain Capital days. Romney punches back by labeling Obama “Outsourcer in Chief.” The latest is that both John Boehner and Harry Reid are voicing outrage over America’s made-in-China Olympic uniforms. “Burn them!” thunders Reid.

Republicans and Democrats strangely agree that outsourcing is unpatriotic, and that the moral and patriotic thing to do is to “Hire American” and “Buy American.”

Well, no. Not in a thousand years. The fear of outsourcing and international trade is economic nonsense and moral blindness. More than that: this anti-profit attitude is un-American.

Despite the ongoing Europeanization of America, America still symbolizes the land of freedom, entrepreneurship, profit-making, above all, individualism.

But collectivism is the premise of “Hire/Buy American”: we are to view ourselves and others not as individuals, but as units of a nation. Businesses are urged to pay more in labor costs, simply to hire workers who are American; consumers are urged to forgo Walmart’s low prices, pay more, simply because the pricier goods were made by “our guys.” This is not rational patriotism, it is not Americanism, it's primitive tribalism.

American individualism means making buying decisions on the basis of economic merit, giving no regard to the nationality or race of the seller. Let’s not hide behind patriotic-sounding slogans. Let’s name things straight for a change: giving preference to American sellers over foreign sellers is the same mindless injustice as giving preference to sellers who are white over those who are black.

Economic nationalism is as morally outrageous as racism. Buying on the basis of nationality or race is the same collectivist evil: judging men and their products by the group from which they come, not by merit.

For the past 30 years China has averaged 10% growth per year. China's economy is 19 times the size it was 30 years ago.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China

The U.S.A has just exploding debt, 16 trillion $ in federal debt, 116 trillion $ in unfunded liabilities, declining cities .

History has proved that the U.S. was rising for 200 years with high tariffs and rising for 40 years when a trade embargo was on china. So your free trade is insane. And you 1rudeboy condescendingly ridicule us all that want to change this insane economic policy and do to china what china has done to us. You are the one that is crazy and wrong because you want to keep up the same economic policies that are now destroying this country, the USA.

Who says we don’t manufacture in America? You made that up all by yourself.

... We truly are nation which has forgotten our history.

Yup ... And we had help forgetting from the enemy within. In the late 1800's the Fabian society came to the conclusion that global communism could not defeat the US through violent means. A subtler approach was needed. Their cultural heir in the early 1900's came out of the Frankfurt School in the form of Cultural Marxism aka political correctness. One of the institutions they have 'marched through' is education.

The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America

Another institution is the media.

He’s not interested in real debate. He runs from truth like a scalded dog, and ignores logical points that destroy his premises to hurl more insults.

It’s rather comical really. I have to go out later. I fully expect him to keep punching himself in the face while I’m gone. He destroys himself every time we debate.

He contradicts himself constantly. He is proven wrong constantly. He can’t extrapolate meaning from anything. He agrees with what he was disagreeing with, only to disagree again a post later.

Some have wondered if he was drinking. Some have wondered if it was something more. All I know is the guy is one wigged out dude. Calling him a disruptor wouldn’t really go far enough.

I read a study that there is enough labor available in China to PRODUCE EVER SINGLE ITEM MANUFACTURED for the entire world. Would that bother you that every manufactured good was produced in one country? It would make economic sense, right?

Do any of you free traders think the U.S.A won't collapse soon under the 16 trillion $ in federal debt and other debts, 116 trillion $ in unfunded liabilities ? You all think we are doing so good ,manufacturing so much. Yeah your solution is keep letting China do to us what they have done for these past few decades which has benefited them at our expense.

Tariffs do nothing to stop competition between domestic manufacturers which hold down prices. They still have to compete with each other.

ROFL This is a point missed by many. Then again many may be accustomed to thinking solely in terms of of crony capitalism and TBTF.

Oh, stop it, you little woman. One way for a free-market, supply-sider to see if points have been scored is to observe what gets ignored, and when the whining begins.

... And if a wage rate was $20.00 per hour, guess what. You don't need poor people from foreign nations to pick the lettuce.

And ... we wouldn't be subsiding new low wage immigrants by $20,000 per household per year, nor would we be subsidizing illegals by $ hundreds of billions per year, etc ..... not to mention security implications.

Exactly! But did you notice the poster didn’t even acknowledge the facts in my post?

It meant nothing to him. That’s what I refer to as outing yourself.

Then maybe you can answer the simple question that no other protectionist can answer: if the purpose of a tariff is to artificially raise a price in order to protect a “high paying” job, then what purpose does it serve for competition to drive the price back down again?

The purpose is to keep the factory in the US. So the people that work there, fellow Americans, will be productive citizens, instead of becoming welfare maggots. Additionally, that factory is going to come in real handy if there is a war of attrition one day. If I’m wrong, then the harm is that people paid maybe 10% more for manufactured goods. If you are wrong the entire world is put at risk for an experiment, maybe the ChiComs have other plans once we are sufficiently “hollowed out”.
