Changing Enemies Into Friends
July 26, 2012
During the US Civil War, hatred became entrenched between the North and South. In one instance, President Abraham Lincoln was criticized for speaking of benevolent treatment for the Southern rebels. The critic reminded Lincoln that there was a war going on, the Confederates were the enemy, and they should be destroyed. But Lincoln wisely responded, I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends.
Lincolns comment is insightful. In many ways it reflects Jesus teaching in the Sermon on the Mount: I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven (Matt. 5:44-45).
We will encounter difficult people in our livessome on whom we will need to set limits. But to give in to the temptation to undermine or hurt them in any way is not Gods way. Instead, we should pray for them, show consideration, look out for their best interests, and emphasize the positive. This may result in changing an enemy into a friend.
Not everyone will respond positively to us, but we can pray and plan for a more harmonious relationship. What difficult person can you start befriending?
Lord, some people in my life are difficult to love.
I am tempted not even to try to care. But You showed
love to me even when I was Your enemy. Please direct
me into ways to love with Your power and grace.
Its hard to hate someone when youre doing something good for him.
Read: Matthew 5:43-48

Im posting this again because I have learned that one of these young heroes was, in fact, in the Military. Jonathan Blunk was a Navy veteran who served several deployments on the USS Nimitz. He was apparently interested in re-enlisting in the Navy with hopes of becoming a Seal. Together with the two civilian heroes of this incident, he has earned our recognition, our respect, and our prayers.
Perceiving danger, these young men confronted it without hesitation, rather than seeking safety. In doing so, they saved the lives of three young women, paying the ultimate price.
May the Lord bless and keep them. May He cause His Countenance to shine upon them. May their valiant souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in Eternal Peace
PRAYERS GOING UP FOR JONATHAN BLUNK, MATT MCQUINN AND ALEX TEVES!
These three young men saved the lives of their girlfriends by shielding them from gunfire at the Aurora Massacre.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15; 13 KJV)
God bless these gallant young men! May their heroic souls rest in eternal peace and may perpetual light shine upon them. Prayers of condolence for their families and friends may they find healing and consolation.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."
Psalm 23 -KJV
