Police continue to investigate Sundays reported hate crime but say they havent ruled out the possibility that the 33-year-old woman staged the attack.
Chief Jim Peschong told the Journal Star investigators were not certain an attack took place, but he said Tuesday it was too early to tell whether the attack was a hoax. Police have no suspects, the chief said.
Capt. Jim Davidsaver said later the FBI had joined the investigation, and an agent was at the department Tuesday.
A 33-year-old Near South woman told police three masked men burst into her house Sunday morning, bound her with zip ties, carved anti-gay slurs into her skin and tried to light her house on fire, according to the womans friend, who spoke to the Journal Star on Sunday.
Lincoln attorney Megan Mikolajczyk told the Journal Star she was representing the woman who reported the crime, but she said her client did not wish to make a statement Tuesday evening.
When she first told me about it, it seemed far-fetched and hard to believe, said Dawn Thorfinnson, another friend who said she met the victim of the reported crime two months ago.
Its entirely understandable (police) are not ready to believe something this horrid would happen, and it would actually be almost better if it never did, she added. I would hate to find out anything that she said wasnt actually real.
Thorfinnson said she thought her friend was telling the truth. She is a good person and staging a brutal attack and then lying about it to an entire community would be out of character, Thorfinnson said.
That would shock me. I know enough about (her) that I know this is not at all something shed be capable of doing.
According to Thorfinnson, the womans attackers told her they targeted her after watching her perform with a 5-year-old girl during Omahas Gay Pride Parade on June 30. The woman lip-synced Elton Johns Your Song while the child danced in a tutu.
During the festivities, the woman was named to a position of prominence, Thorfinnson said. She wanted to champion tolerance and make the world a better place for future generations of gays and lesbians.
Its really sad she was attacked for being with kids when its the children shes really focused on, Thorfinnson said. Thats why she wanted to do any event during Pride where were raising kids in a world of acceptance and tolerance instead of hate.
Supporters have set up several fundraisers to help the woman, and well-wishers donated money for the womans recovery in various ways, Thorfinnson said. They include donation jars at several Lincoln Blockbuster stores; a fundraiser at The Q, a Lincoln gay bar; and websites of such LGBT organizations as Outlinc, Star City Pride and Heartland Pride.
Its absolutely fantastic so many people have stepped up, said Tyler Richard, president of Outlinc. Richard declined to give a dollar figure, instead referring the Journal Star to Mikolajczyk.
Not surprising. The hate-crime story goes on page 1. The news that it was a hoax gets buried on page 18, so most people never find out it was a hoax. The hoaxster generally faces no penalty.
The net effect is to create a perception in the public mind that hate crimes are rampant, and SOMETHING MUST BE DONE, like passing more legislation. Net win for the Left.
While the jury is still out if this is a hoax, in any event regardless of outcome it is a HATE CRIME.
It is either a hate crime against perverts or a hate crime against straight people.
Should this, or other crimes of this nature be determined to be a hoax, the punishment should be EXACTLY the same as if it were not a hoax.
I would say the story has more holes than a box of Dunkin’ Muhckins, but, then again, I happen to like Dunkin’ Munchkins.
LOL! Don’t tell Moochelle or Mika...they’ll send the food police after you!
Wholly agreed.
Right. Who put out the fire, which was intended to burn house and “victim”? I hope this hoaxer pays to the fullest extent of the law. Hopefully the FBI will make her sing like a canary.
You've got to be kidding. In the name of "reparations," this criminal dyke will get a pass on any false report charge and still smell like a rose to the homosexual colony of America.
It's all about "equality," you know.
“Not ruling out a hoax” is cop-speak for “completely certain she staged it, and what a dimwit she is, too.”
Someone on thread yesterday perceptively observed that cutting the skin is NOT a factor in crime at almost any time, but is highly typical of psychologically disturbed girls and young women.
“Tolerance” and even “pride” do not make people with sexual disorders (often related to abuse) happy or stable people. Some need so desperately to believe that their misery is caused by “prejudice” or “intolerance” that they have to stage the incidents themselves. She needs to believe she’s really a victim, and she needs the outpouring of attention and support she’s receiving ... because she didn’t have a loving and secure family, with a mother and father, when that was what she most needed.
"Just one more question but doesn't doesn't it strike you as strange that the perps would go down into your basement to spray paint a neatly lettered message on your wall?"
Well, you know, insanely bigoted masked home invaders always have very nice penmanship with their spray can, and they avoid marking visible areas or places that can’t be cleaned easily.
My favorite was the gasoline fire that was supposed to kill her so she couldn’t testify against them, but only caused $200 in damage. That’s not even a significant patch in the carpet or vinyl ... and it wasn’t lit long enough to make any smoke or fumes, even.
The last two women I read about who claimed that "attackers" carved words on them were bagged as hoaxers. The words were carved backwards -- as if done in a mirror...
Dummies!
Why does the purported "victim" need a lawyer so quickly?
I was thinking the same thing, Peej. Was she attacked in her basement? If not, why would perps go down there to spraypaint their “hate” message? Wouldn’t it be more effective on, say, the living room walls?
Another oddity: She was attacked by hate-filled, homophobic men who stripped her naked, tied her up, but didn’t rape her?
IF the attack occured at all, I would suspect jealous lesbians rather than men.
Well it took a month, but here you have it! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2191664/Charlie-Rogers-Lesbian-charged-lying-claiming-masked-men-tied-beat-carved-anti-gay-slurs-body.html
The cops knew this less than 5 minutes after checking out her and her house.
