LOS ANGELES This would seem a moment of great opportunity for California Republicans. The state has become a national symbol of fiscal turmoil and dysfunction, the Legislature is nearly as unpopular as Congress and Democrats control every branch of government.
But instead, the state party once a symbol of Republican hope and geographical reach and which gave the nation Ronald Reagan (and Richard M. Nixon) is caught in a cycle of relentless decline, and appears in danger of shrinking to the rank of a minor party.
We are at a lower point than weve ever been, said Representative Kevin McCarthy, the No. 3 Republican in the United States House of Representatives. Its rebuilding time.
Registered Republicans now account for just 30 percent of the California electorate, and are on a path that analysts predict could drop them to No. 3 in six years, behind Democrats, who currently make up 43 percent, and independent voters, with 21 percent.
Its no longer a statewide party, said Allan Hoffenblum, who worked for 30 years as a Republican consultant in California. They are down to 30 percent, which makes it impossible to win a statewide election. You just cant get enough crossover voters.
They have alienated large swaths of voters, he said. They have become too doctrinaire on the social issues. Its become a cult.
There is not a single Republican holding statewide office. Democrats overwhelmingly control the State Assembly and Senate. In interviews, Republicans were unable to come up with any names of credible candidates preparing to run for statewide office. By contrast, the Democratic bench is bustling with ambitious younger politicians who are waiting for their moment. It is a giant turnaround since 2003, when Arnold Schwarzenegger knocked out the Democratic governor, Gray Davis,

It’s pretty hard to maintain the status of a major party, when all of your constituents are fleeing to the USA.
And the rest of the highly-populated states will go the same route, as sex deviates, welfare parasites, illegals, inner-city tribal units, felons, and Union-extortionists who are ALL dependent on Taxpayers have gained the necessary size to overwhelm the Tax-paying Repulicans. Once the Exodus of business and taxpayers is complete, they will depend on Taxpayers nationwide to keep them afloat.....it’s coming to a City near YOU soon, too......
The GOP isn’t doing well in Beijing, Pyongyang, Tehran and Havana either. Ain’t lookin’ good.
...as the lemming democratic populace of California march into the sea on their way to Catalina.
Wake up people. White babies are a minority. In a few years, we will be told that we will never get suburban women if we don't support gay marriage.
Sadly, my State is going hard Left and will pretty much eliminate the GOP in November. The worst part is the GOP will have less than the 1/3 needed to stop a full Rat takeover.
California is well down the road to the hell One Party government.
The only thing saving it from compelte disaster is Prop 13.
Some fear that those fleeing will pollute the area they are moving to. It would seem good guys are fleeing and may reinforce Republican ranks in their new homes.
California is a one party Democrat state. It is in financial decline and is on the verge of bankruptcy. The state has no one to save them from themselves. There is no Ronald Reagan. There is nothing to prevent further decline.
I see nothing that can be done about it. The Dems have gerrymandered themselves into a permanent position of power. The state government is beholden to union interests that are finding out that their pensions and the tax revenues to pay them their wages are shrinking with alarming rapidity. Of course, nobody is willing to take the first hit. In the meantime, CA is losing power generation capability and the ability to harness it natural resources, eg; oil. Industries are fleeing for lower taxes. In short, the great climate has ceased being the factor that could outweigh any and all other disadvantages.
This once-great state I moved to 40 years ago, which had the best roads, the best schools, jobs for anyone who could get out of bed 2 days in a row, and a thousand different industries of every description, is now an amorphous mass of welfare recipients and dedicated liberals intent upon creating a utopia of ever-shifting characteristics. They’re not going to be convinced until it’s destroyed.
So let it crash and burn. Neither logic nor reason need apply. It will have to be a socio-science fair project that goes wrong at the end.
Most Republicans have long since fled the state, and I too will be doing just that ASAP.
There are still many conservatives in the state - but most of them do nothing of anything politically significant - hell, half of them rarely vote. jmho!
They have become the marginalized party in a soon to be marginalized state.
From now on, California is considered suffering from a sickness of liberal excess. Sort of a place to visit, but not live (unless you are very wealthy). Unhealthy in many ways.
Bump
Add to that faux Republicans who sabotage any conservative who dares run for office. The Wilsons, Parskys, Schwarzeneggers, Maldonados et al. have done everything they can to screw the Republican base for their own personal gain and petty vendettas.
And judges have done everything they can to subvert the will of the people and enact their own agenda, add to that voter fraud, people no longer have confidence their votes and voices count anymore.
Now that many conservatives have fled the once golden state, and I know of many, and illegals are firmly entranched, that has lead to the decline in party registration.
This has happened because the California GOP attempted to become a “big tent” party and precisely because they elected a RINO to replace Davis. Electing Rinos is not a “lesser of two evils” act, it is the path to oblivion. They taint the party label for generations and destroy the party’s ability to take principled stands against collectivism. In short, they turn the GOP into the very thing conservatives are fighting.
I’d rather fight a pitched battle against a Dem marxist with a small number of true liberty loving conservatives at my side then capitulate with a Rino’s dagger in my back.
Throughout the 1990s Jack Kemp, Jeb Bush, William Bennett, and other national Republicans were in California railing against California voters for passing Prop 187.. a perfect time for moles to move to take control of the Party.
I will likely register with the Constitution Party -- or as an independent
I think that's the case. I myself brought six new conservatives to Texas, from California.
