Denver shooting suspect James Holmes purchased some 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the internet before carrying out hismassacre at a midnight screening of Batman.
The ammunition was part of a massive arsenal he gathered in the run-up to the killings, which also included four guns legally purchased at local gun shops.
His weapons were two Glock pistols, a 12-guage shotgun, and a high-powered AR-15 assault rifle fitted with a drum magazine allowing a fire rate of 50 to 60 rounds per minute.
Dan Oates, the chief of police in Aurora, Colorado, where Holmes killed 12 people and injured 58 others, said: He purchased four guns at local gun shops and through the internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition, more than 3,000 rounds of 0.223 ammunition for the assault rifle, 3,000 rounds of 0.40 caliber ammunition for the two Glocks in his possession, and 300 rounds for the 12 gauge shotgun.
Also through the internet he purchased multiple magazines for the 0.223 caliber assault rifle including one 100-round drum magazine which was recovered from the scene.
Even if it was semi-automatic Im told by experts that with that drum magazine he could have got off 50 to 60 rounds within a minute. As far as we know it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in the theatre.
My understanding is that all the weapons he possessed, he possessed legally and all the clips that he possessed, he possessed legally and all the ammunition he possessed, he possessed legally.
Holmes is also believed to have joined a casual sex website where he apparently hinted at his plans for his killing spree, asking potential suitors: Will you visit me in prison?

We Freepers seem to have terrible problems with tragic boating accidents that cause us to lose thousands of dollars worth of arms and ammo. My condolences to you..
Exactly right! But, brace yourself for an all-out assault on the 2nd Amendment now to include the one and only Mitt Romney aided by John McCain and other, oh, so reasonable GOP’ers.
It was shockingly easy to legally buy not one, or two, but three cans of green beans last week!
4 firearms with ammo for each is not a “massive arsenal”.
Also they don’t note there’s no way in hell he’d be able to lug 6000 rounds around, much less fire them all. Nutball gave himself up with 5900 rounds left in his apartment.
Again all this example illustrates is INTENT IS EVERYTHING.
There are people who deliberately run people down in their cars and they have a legal driver’s license and legal plates. They may own multiple cars. Do we ban everyone else from driving or owning cars because of these idiots? Cars are efficient killing machines and you may not get caught, and if you do the sentences are less severe than if you used a gun.
It was shockingly easy to attack a theater full of dis-armed Americans.
Exactly
And of course the DC Muslim killers.
Hell, I usually have that many just on layaway.
I agree, Silverleaf. The killer was smart, obviously, but we can safely assume that kind of assault requires a lot of training and practice. Combine that with the extreme cost of the firearms, ammunition, armor, etc., this appears at first glance to be a very well-funded and well-planned paramilitary operation. I can’t imagine he was acting alone in this horrible massacre.
Don’t forget those evil swimming pools.
Me,either.
The headline says “Shockingly easy to get the guns”.
I want to know how he got in there dressed as he was and carrying the weapons! No one is talking about this.
I’m just a housewife, so what do I know? When the towers were hit on 9/11, the first thought I had was, “Why wasn’t the cockpit door locked....they’ve been hijacking planes since I was in high school in the 60’s.
Likewise, it was easy for every person in that theater to be armed and take out the shooter.
Alas the liberals who run the theater demanded the audience to be disarmed for an easy slaughter.
We will know if he was part of an organized conspiracy to ban guns. There will be a very easy tell tale.
If like Timothy McVay, he is rapidly convicted, sentenced to death, and then executed, then we will know he was part of an organized plot. The death penalty takes decades to carry out. I knew immediately wen McVay was quickly executed, that he was part of a conspiracy and they didn’t want him talking in prison.
We will see if Holmes is rapidly executed like McVay. It he goes through decades of death penalty appeals, then he is just another evil nut-job.
I think you have the answer. He was not intending to pay off his credit card bill. A maniac intent on slaughtering a large number of people would not be too concerned with his future credit score.
The mentality of the journalists has been so indoctrinated and warped.
The writer referred to the “deadly arsenal” the shooter was able to obtain - as if the parts of that arsenal were under their own control and would be “deadly” no matter who possessed them. As stored arms and ammunition, for whatever purpose, the items themselves do not control themselves and they, on their own, were not deadly. The shooter was.
If the shooter woke up every morning hearing the call of his “arsenal” saying “use me”, “use me”, it was the call of his own insane imagination, not the weapons or the ammunition.
