Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry on Tuesday reaffirmed his position that candidates should be forthcoming with their tax documentation, finding himself again at odds with Mitt Romney, his party's presumptive presidential nominee.
Perry first called on Romney to release his tax returns when running for the GOP presidential nomination, and in late January, Romney released his records for 2010 and an estimate of his liability for tax year 2011. He has since said that he does not intend to release additional years, as Democrats - and an increasing number in his own party - have called for.
Perry addressed the issue when asked by a reporter in Austin on Tuesday.
"I'm a big believer that no matter who you are or what office you're running for, you should be as transparent as you can be with your tax returns and other aspects of your life so that people have the appropriate ability to judge your background and what have you," he said.

"I certainly think it is inappropriate for the president of the United States to not keep his college transcript and his law school transcript public," he continued. "He should make those available."
Perry ...in January ...
"Mitt, we need for you to release your income tax so the people of this country can see how you made your money," he said. "Listen, here's the real issue for us: as Republicans, we cannot fire our nominee in September. We need to know now. So I hope you'll put your tax records out there this week so the people of South Carolina can take a look and decide if, you know, we've got a flawed candidate or not."

On Tuesday, Romney said in an interview that Democrats would use the records to "distort" him.

Perry is right.
Mitt should release tax records.
Obama should release all records.
I suppose we know now at least one reason McCain might have rejected Romney as VP mate in 2008.
Rick Perry = useful tool (for the democrats)
sore loserman?
Romney is in the process of getting this stupid ploy behind him. Why is Perry giving the media fresh stories to write?
Perry is doing this:
1. Because he probably believes what he’s saying.
2. Paybacks are hell
Romney might get away with this, though, if he has the guts to bring up Obama’s records that remain secret.
If he doesn’t have the guts to make that an issue, then the media will gut and fillet him over this.
Perry = NRO
Useful idiots.
ping
Maybe I missed it but did the dummy also say that barry should release his school records or stop blocking the f/f investigation
Straight out of the Obama / DNC talking points.
Yep. Perry's Dewhurst campaigning and this show that the dreadful performance last year in the campaign was not a singular event. I thank Perry for his championing of the 10th Amendment, but he's looking to be politically dull.
WRONG!
Perry clarified his comments later.
Recognizing that any release will be seen as weakness, and the nittpicking and accusations will never end.
Perry should shut up and stop being a back seat driver.
Perry should say, “It’s Romney’s call” and that is the truth.
Mitt's baby-daddy released 12 years worth of tax records.
Sometimes, I guess, the acorn doesn't fall anywhere near the tree ~ not even in the same part of the country.
Frankly, the Mittbots have more issues to talk about than their master's tax records, but he's made his choice ~ now we'll hear endlessly about Mitt's taxes and all the speculation surrounding that distraction.
What happened to the debates over Obama's destruction of the United States?
Hey, folks, if it's not important enough for Mitt to get into ~ then why do you keep demanding those who oppose his nomination to engage in it.
Question: Did Romney file returns with the IRS ?
Were they accepted ?
End of discussion.
Look to Corsine, Geitner...etc.you want to talk ‘felons’?!
Did Clinton ever release medical records?
Why open THOUSANDS of cans of worms to nitpick over?
yes, he did
What a “heartless” thing to say...
When all you can say about Perry is that he is in the game for Perry, we may want to look at why Obama thinks he can turn Texas into a battle ground state. Maybe Rick heard the Democrats would like him back as state chairman.
There is NO reason for Mitt Romney to release anything. If someone wants to know about Bain, that is probably public. Obama is trying to rope Romney in with the assistance of Perry, Barbour, et al. When Obama publishes EVERYTHING, which is by now all scrubbed and redone anyway, than maybe Romney could release his own college records. Anything with his wife’s name on it should not be considered fair game.
Do you think the IRS failed to audit him?
Do you suspect he committed tax fraud?
Or do you think maybe this is part of obama’s class envy war? Do you think Romney's releasing tax records will end it? Or play into it?
Do you think Romney is too rich to get elected?
Is income honestly earned and wealth honesty built a disqualifier in this election?
Is that in the US Constitution?
Personally I think Romney should release ONLY past 2 yrs of tax returns, his tax returns from his time as Gov of Massachusetts since he was a public servant then, his birth certificate to prove his Constitutional eligibility to by US president, and his school transcripts from kindergarten through law school to prove his academic achievements.
Then refuse any further comment on those publicly posted records
Game On.
