Sources: Joe Paterno's statue stays

The embattled members of Penn State's Board of Trustees quietly have decided to leave Joe Paterno's statue standing -- at least for now and, some hope, forever, according to sources with firsthand knowledge of the trustees' private discussions this week.

The trustees' reluctance to remove the statue is motivated, in part, by a desire not to offend alumni and students who adore the late coach despite the damning findings of his role in the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse cover-up detailed in the Freeh report, the sources said. Some trustees also said in interviews they want to resist being pressured by the media into a sudden decision about such an emotionally charged issue.

They may as well shutter the program. As Rush says, the libs have football in their cross hairs and the sport as we know it will soon be dead. Just seeing some of the rule changes announced by the B1G Conference today makes one think it will soon (as in this coming year or in the very foreseeable future) be little more than a glorified scrimmage.

Shut down the whole football program? Who’s going to be hurt by this? None of the perpetrators or their enablers. The hoteliers who depend on football weekend business, the restaurant owners, all their student employees, the sweatshirt and souvenir manufacturers and vendors and all of their low-income (and innocent) employees, the kids who work in the stadium, and on and on and on. Thousands of people, mostly young and low-income, dependent on college football related jobs and completely innocent of these crimes, will be adversely affected by cancelling the football season. They didn’t do anything wrong and they don’t deserve to be punished.

Cry me a freakin' river. I was attending SMU in 1987 when they received the Death Penalty. The majority of the players, boosters and administrators were long gone by the time the penalty kicked in. That is often the case in these situations - people who had nothing to do with the sins endure the punishment. For two years, soccer was our homecoming. Lots of people were hurt for no reason other than a few boosters, with the blessing of the administration, were better at buying players than the rest of the NCAA.

The two years we did not play (we could have played away games only in year 2, but opted against it), allowed the university to clean house and get the priorities straight. THAT is what PSU needs by the truckload.

Stop drinking the Happy Valley kool aid and see how heinous this is. The longer PSU dances around with "investigations" and band aids like painting the showers, the worse the nightmare will get. Go Google "shut down PSU football." I am not alone in my opinion that drastic measures are needed for the nation at large to believe that the university is serious that protecting young boys from being raped in PSU showers and not covering it up when it is discovered, is a little more important than college football. Yes, even in Happy Valley!

I bet Hitler’s dog would enjoy pissing on Paterno’s statue.

You are indeed defending and supporting Paterno. In your first post on the thread you said you wanted a statue of him for your front yard and in your second post you said, of his supporters, “like me they love Joe Paterno” for all the supposedly wonderful things he did. You can’t pretend otherwise now. You have no credibility.

Who’s going to be hurt by this?

Still drinking the Paterno KoolAid

That was why he covered Sandusky's actions up.

The fact a majority of them don't see the problem most likely indicates we are not done with the Sandusky problem.

After a few months in stir maybe ol' Jer would like to talk to someone!

You know, when this story first broke back in November, I asked, what if McQueery had been working late at night and thought he saw somebody vandalizing Paterno’s office or statue...maybe even making “slapping noises.” Would he have ran and called his daddy to ask what to do next?

Well that is entirely different argument and you should have made that clear at the outset.

But Penn State isn't helping itself by dragging it's feet in denouncing Paterno and those others who were covering up Sandusky.

I think they should fire everyone who works for Penn State, burn all the buildings, blow up the stadium and then plow salt into the soil.

The Death Penalty is the best thing that ever happened to SMU, it’s a great school now, the death penalty forced them to focus on what really matters.

I will say that, there is one huge difference between SMU and Penn State. Shutting down SMU football had minimal impact on the Dallas economy, shutting down PSU football will devastate the Happy Valley economy.

And that is a very, very, good thing. Because covering up an evil of this type needs to serve as an abject lesson.
