General Motors announced this month its auto sales increased by 16 percent in June, its best monthly sales gain since 2008. Considering all the company has been through, and the fact that it still owes taxpayers approximately $25 billion in TARP repayments, a 16 percent boost in sales sounds like good news, right?
Who knows? With consumers buying up all these cars, maybe GM can reestablish itself as an auto heavyweight, shareholders will finally get to see a return on their investments, and President Obama will have something to brag about on the campaign trail.
Not so fast.
As it turns out, theres a big reason GM experienced an increase in sales last month: government purchases of GM vehicles rose a whopping 79% in June, according to the National Legal and Policy Centers Mark Modica...

“GM Boasts Strong June Sales”
should say...
“GM Boasts Strong Government June Sales.”
The headline says that 79% sold were to Fed, but the article seems to say that the Fed increases purchases by 79%. Do you know which is the case?
” government purchases of GM vehicles rose a whopping 79% in June,” does not equal 79% of GM vehicles sold.
Somme ting wong.
I'd also like to know. Thanks in advance.
totally misleading title on this.
government didn’t purchase 79% of vehicles.
governemtn purchases increased 79%. the article never says what % of total vehicles government purchased, but i am guessing its small. otherwise they would have said so.
so, sales to government could, and probably were, minuscule
To all those Freepers that post good sales of GM. Stick your posts up your butt.
Title should be: “GM Boasts Strong June Sales But Is That the Whole Story?”
Fake and misleading headline.
The article makes no such claim.
Do they (gubbmint) purchase those to recycle?
Altas shrugged, anyone?
You don’t have to lie to make the government look bad.
Obamanomics - your tax S$ trapped in the government whirlpool by Obama-engineered uniform circular motion
Government employees, paid by your tax money, purchasing cars, with your tax money, from a company bailed out by your tax money, and they won’t even give you a ride in one of those new GM cars to the grocery store so you can see people using your tax money to buy groceries.
I was at a multi brand dealership the other day for a job. Chevrolet was one of the lines they carried. I currently own a pre-bail out Chevy van that I bought about a year ago for 575 bucks..
the sales guys where bored I guess. Asking me if I wanted to trade and get a newer van.. I was trying to be nice with out saying “leave me the eff alone if you want to get back on to facebook” (their T1 was down) so I just said “in a few months that thing will turn 300,000 miles. you won’t take it in on trade”
He went away and I thought that was the end of it.
Nope.. He came back with a offer on my van (a bit more than I paid for it) and a write up for a new van with the same specs..
I said thanks I’ll think about it..
I went and looked at new Fords and Benzs today.
The Sprinter Diesel is nice.. I might hold out for the new Ford vans due out later this year.
No way I’ll own a post bailout GM.

Just wait and see what their sales will be like- when the Federal government requires everyone to buy one. After all, the Supreme Court says that’s ok.
