No. Zimmerman was an idiot - he lied under oath about his financial situation. Funny thing about courts, when you swear to tell the truth; and then tell a flat-out lie, then afterwards are on a monitored phone in prison and discuss your lies - the courts seem to frown on that.

In a case where so much of Zimmerman’s defence relies upon his word (as well as physical evidence, drug tests on Trayvon, dective reports) - providing the Prosecution ammunition for a witch-hunt is just bone-headed stupid.

If you or I were being tried, and we lied to the judge about our financial situation with regard to bail - it’s quite likely the same events would happen to us.

The fact that this is even going to trial, that the Prosecution is ignoring the facts - is just race baiting. And, hopefully just like previous Prosecutors who made policical decisions and ignored the facts (Duke LaCross team, for example), the odds are fair that the Prosecutor will find himself fired, debarred and thrown out on his butt (as, IMHO, he so richly deserves).

But, Zimmerman lied, and for this is being punished - in accordance with the law. Perhaps this portion of his story is the only portion that has legal merit. The fact that he is even being charged is, IMHO, entirely bogus.

gee, so bail is punitive?

the judge decides the amount of bail based on a decision how much to punish the defendant and how to seize his assets

the defendant- who is presumed to be an innocent person (until proven guilty)

I always thought bail was set to ensure the public was protected from dangerous people being out on the streets (ie repeat or heinous offenders endangering the public) and to ensure a defendant would show up for trial

thanks for enlightening us

No, he didn't. See post 20 in this thread.

Do you also believe that Martin was the fresh faced 12 year old portrayed in the initial reports by the MSM.

You really need to start paying attention

What lie did Zimmerman actually tell the judge? And be specific, don’t just tell us what MSNBC and NBC told you he said.

I don't think I can agree with that. If I were Zimmerman, I wouldn't have considered that my money, to do with as I pleased. I would view it as other people's money, who were volunteering to help pay my lawyer.

Since when is bail based on a "means" test. It's none of the judges damn business.

And considering the death threats....he's entitled to flee. Damn right....

Bail is not punishment. Its a security to appear in court. If he is in contempt or violated pre trial release, it should be dealt as such. This is bs...

He didn't lie, the financial situation was very fluid, he had money coming in for his defense fund and didn't know how to claim it.

You guys are so quick to jump on a guy who is going through a severe trauma, first having to defend his life and kill someone and then being arrested for it.

It was an oversight and didn't rate having his bail revoked.

I don't even buy the idea of anybody lying to this judge, more like putting the worst possible spin on a clumsy answer at a point where Zimmerman's finances were in a state of flux and they didn't really know how much money they were going to have available.

I mean, the guy (Zimmerman) passed two separate lie detector tests related to shooting Martin, different kinds of lie detectors, odds of fooling both of them vanishingly near zero, why would he start deliberately lying to a judge?

This judge has zero mandate to use his power to set bails as a vehicle of punishment, his only mandate is to ensure Zimmerman's return and the million dollar bail is provably not needed for that.

Legal experts have described this case as a career ender for the prosecutor and this judge acts as if he had some sort of a stake in not allowing that to happen.

“Zimmerman was an idiot - he lied under oath about his financial situation.”

Then why hasn’t he been charged with perjury, instead of his wife?
