~ Independence Day ~ July 4, 1776 ~
Preamble to the Declaration of Independence
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Mozart: Sonata for Violin and Piano in A, K. 305

When Jefferson died in 1826, an inventory of his music library showed tons of sheet music of English dances, but the one thing that stood out like a beacon was a book of Mozart violin sonatas. The early works were written for the home market, but the middle and late period violin sonatas were written for professionals. If Jefferson could play these well, he was a violinist of concert quality. This sonata is new to me, but I can guarantee that it will be fun.

This is very French, romantic, and quite nice.
Schubert: Quintet for Piano and Strings in A, D. 667
Jon Kimura Parker, piano

This is the famous Trout Quintet, named thus because its fourth movement is a set of variations on his song, The Trout. Schubert liked to vacation in the town of Steyr, where he stayed with mine manager and amateur cellist Sylvester Paumgartner, who had a large house with a fine salon for chamber music. When Schubert was 22, he stayed there and answered Paumgartners request for something based on The Trout with this piece. Sylvester played the cello, and friends played the three other string parts from music paper where the ink was still wet on the page. Schubert played the piano part from memory and wrote it all down later for publication. Its one of the warhorses of the repertory, but its sheer fun. You walk out of the hall smiling and whistling the tunes.

Great to see you this evening! We're playing it pretty low-key this year - I've been sick the last few days and will try to get some rest. It's too hot (for me) for grilling - I think we'll have some stuffed salmon filets. I have a couple of errands to run - will try to take care of them in the a.m. before the serious heat sets in.
