The Corpus Christi, Tex. Police Department has found itself on the business end of a civil rights lawsuit after the Justice Department concluded that a physical ability test used when considering job applications discriminates against women. As a condition for employment, new applicants must pass a physical ability test (PAT) involving: pullups, a 300-meter run, a 1.5 mile run, and sit-ups. Only 19 percent of female applicants passed this test between 2005 and 2009, compared to 63 percent of men, the DOJ complaint records. The Justice Department says that the test discriminates

Of course it “discriminates”, you governmental morons! Isn’t that what a test and standards does...discriminate so you tell who is qualified and who is not?????? Sheesh! All these mentally incapicitated liberal morons need to be placed in solitary confinement. Devil’s Island comes to mind. Their total lunacy is destroying logic and reasoning.
The city will be sued for allowing an incapable officer in the field. A wrongful death suit because she was incapable of handling a situation requiring physical skills that she didn't possess. Another wrongful death suit by the family of her dead partner because she was incapable of protecting that partner. Possibly a lawsuit by the citizen who suffered harm at the hands of a criminal who possessed better physical skills than the law enforcement personnel sent to handle the case. The lawyers will eat this up.
I just want fewer cops. So I don’t care. I will take care of myself. I don’t need no gubment cheese swilling union thugs in my day.
Well.....that depends. My mom is about that size. I wouldn’t want to up to no good, and anywhere near her. Especially if she was armed. :-)
But your point is well taken. There will always be exceptions to any rule.
Hey, Mr Holder! How about you and your boss lead by example? Make all members of your protective details women. Surely they can do the job of protecting you just as well as men can?
I wholeheartedly agree. And so does my daughter.
Ironically, of all places, she went through a battery of physical and written tests to get with SFPD that were tough.. No slack for the women there. My daughter is not some broad shouldered masculine type. She is however tough as nails and smarter than damn near everyone I've ever known, with spooky reflexes. Anyway, as I said, you wouldn't figure SFPD to be so tough on women candidates, but they were. And I can only say that in her case, compared to most men as the alternative, I'd have wanted her in a crisis situation.
Obviously she is a rare case. And she is front and shoulders with the notion that the physical demands of a job apply regardless of one's sex. Carry the weight or hit the road.
She didn't stay with SFPD for several reasons (the political insanity for one). But I am still somewhat surprised that a commie town like SF would have such high standards for police candidates. Considered some of the most stringent in the country. Who would have thought?
Playing Devil’s Advocate:
Male officers:
Some are bullies and want to push people around.
Some are libs and want to “help” people.
Some have something to prove.
Some want union bennies.
Some believe they are TJ Hooker/Swat guys/neo military bad butts.
Some really want to be cops and can actually do the job.
That’s a good point, so it’s not how that program should be run.
The bottom line is to accept that the civilian world is not that big for physical fitness, and that lots of recruits who are intellectually and emotionally up for the job need some guided physical instruction.
But the emphasis is never on just making the minimum, but to get them so fit that even if they are having a bad day, they do a lot better than minimum.
Most instructors would be thrilled if all their recruits were significantly above minimum on day one, but that almost never happens. And the slowest and weakest slow everyone else down.
And yes, there are also a lot of physically fit recruits who cannot hack the intellectual or emotional part of the job as well. So if they are unlearned, classroom prep works as well.
Possibly, but there should be a concrete separation between the “prep phase” and the “real training.” Including at least a week off, different classrooms, different training facilities, new trainng cadres, etc.
Troops (LE or military) who are coddled and hand-held into and through training, will be the first to fold up, collapse, and fall apart under great phyical or emotional stress.
That’s reality, as known by a 55-year-old former frogman.
Your mileage may vary, but my reality is my reality.
You're kidding, right? Or you're extremely ignorant of the current physical requirements to complete Ranger school.
Women dont Belong in Ranger School
As a Ranger you have to go there, epic stupidity.
like gun control, this is another advantage for crooks
Do not say Kill them all and let God sort the out. This will kill an interview real quick.
Thanks! That’s good advice! (heh) Happy Fourth and thanks for your service!
I quite agree. I imagine pre-training as pretty informal, but it is very serious in character. Yes, different cadre, but with the idea of boosting entry level quality.
From a trainers point of view, it’s a whole lot better for the whole course if the trainees arrive able to physically perform. It means that PT is focused on making what is good better, and keeping everyone at that level, so that when they have to do the classroom they aren’t drag-ass tired.
The opposite problem is perhaps worse, when they can cut the physical part, but not the classroom. You can train them to have more strength and endurance, but training them to be smarter is a whole ‘nother ball of wax.
Why can’t women apply to do the ‘brainy’ cop jobs — investigators, detectives, administration at high levels like the Chief of Police, without going through the charade of trying to achieve elusive success as a street cop?
It make no sense to have them on the street, but there are TONS of jobs in policing women could be just as good at as men.
It make no sense that every cop has to start as a patrol officer. Why? Completely different skill set than detective.
The military doesn’t make every officer experience being a private. If you’re smart, you get a commission. You’re an officer and you didn’t have to “work your way up.”
Doctors don’t start emptying bedpans. It makes no sense.
There’s no reason for women to be street cops; but there’s reason that should be a bar to other types of police jobs.
Yes but DOJ doesn’t give two craps when guys can’t pass the test.
If you read what the test is, it is very very physically easy.
And I was answering the poster’s specific question, not trying to be a “devil’s advocate”.
