I apologize for not being current but my job has shifted me 450mi and it can be quite daunting. I wish this upon nobody. I found your poster packed up and I guess it made it to the Atlantic. My home in middle TN is still there and draining me until it is ready. I wish all here at the canteen the best yet this year has been quite a shift meant for young folks. This will end up very well.

The year 1888 was a messy one for Johannes Brahms in that he had to find a new apartment. His lady friends, all safely married, helped him find new furniture and a housekeeper who could clean around the clutter in Jo’s home without disturbing anything.

A trip to Italy and a summer in Switzerland produced his next to last collection of songs and his last violin sonata.

This sonata, like the Opus 101 trio, is short and to the point. The slow movement, in second position, contains one of his great heartbreaking melodies. The intermezzo has some of his best rhythmic games. The finale is a bravura movement, full of fun and flash.

Brahms: Violin Sonata in D minor, Op. 108

He was a fascinating man with a naughty sense of humor and a dangerous wit. He just had all those problems with womenkind due to the days he played piano in a waterfront dive and watched the goings on.

Good evening, Kathy!

*HUGS*

How are you doing this evening? The dust is settling at the office - hours are back to 40 per. About a dozen of the noobies were cut - but they'll be picked up on another project soon. Things are picking up in this line of work.

I went to see my PCP yesterday - he's got me on antibiotics and Robitussin in addition to all the other meds I'm on.

Holy carp Luvie....If I were ever to leave my beloved AZ I might just move back to Texas!

For the summer of 1889, Johannes Brahms decided to return to his old haunts at Bad Ischl. The main project for this summer was rewriting his early piano trio from 1854 by tightening it up. His friends preferred the unruly wildness of the early version, but this is the version that has stood the test of time.

It starts with the kind of long-limbed melody that Brahms was prone to write in his youth. Catch the delicious portamento on the cello at the beginning. At 2:31, the second subject in G# minor is brand new material, as is the development. None of the sprawling and long-winded counterpoint of the first version survived. The cello work at the end is glorious.

Brahms: Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in B Major, Op. 8, first movement

The scherzo, in second position, is almost untouched from the original. The slow movement starts with the pianist’s hands at opposite ends of the keyboard to create a bell-like sound. This performance uses the latest technical trick of joining the two movements. The pianist doesn’t let the final B Major chord from the scherzo decay completely before starting the slow movement.

second and third movements

The finale was rewritten by introducing a new second subject, something that Clara Schumann hated. The movement sounds like a grim old folk ballad, with Brahms in his best folk writing mode.

fourth movement
