Those contemptuous epithets and more were hurled by Republicans and conservatives at Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. moments after he single-handedly saved Obamacare, joining liberals on the bench to break a 4-4 tie.
The Supreme Court has abandoned us, Texas Gov. Rick Perry declared. Simply disappointing, Florida Gov. Rick Scott moaned. Activist court, Rep. Michele Bachmann cried.
Even Ari Fleischer, the former spokesman for George W. Bush, who appointed Chief Justice Roberts to the court, joined in. I miss Justice Harriet Miers, he whined.
But they all miss the point, and, more, by looking purely at the political, miss the forest for the trees.

“If this was a tax and decided on those grounds, the case shouldn’t have been decided and punted back until it was in effect.”
YES! Thank you! If he really believes this is a “TAX”, then there IS no case until the tax has been paid. Which it has NOT. Plus, it seems to me that all taxes need to start in the House. I am still unclear whether this was started there or not, but I’ve been reading that it started in the Senate.
I think that yes, Obamacare as a whole is unconstitutional and wrong.
Roberts, however, might have seen that judging it a tax would benefit the Republicans immensely as:
1. Its rejection doesn’t become a campaign issue, but rather Obama’s “no tax increase” promise becomes a lie.
2. The Republicans will overturn the sucker anyway.
3. The Republican base is motivated even MORE.
I predict that Obama will lose by 2%-3% more because of this decision. I have to wait until the debates are over to get a really accurate picture, but it looks like Romney’s gonna beat Obama by at least 55%-43%. The coattails should ensure a heavy Republican House and a 60+ in the Senate.
That night in November looks to be a nice one.
Awww, c’mon, share!
Can you answer this: Do you think Roberts has a Game Plan beyond the theories elsewhere discussed?
Elections? ROTFL! We live in a country where anyone can vote as many times as they want.
Your post made me laugh a little, so thanks for that - I do appreciate your sentiments, completely.
As I said, I wish the guy had not written this bizarre opinion - but I do think it’s now up to us, the American public, to act now to get this thing repealed. The main thing John Roberts is guilty of is failing to rescue us from ourselves, as the blame for Obamacare rests with the country that elected this POS to office. Hate it? Get involved and make sure it gets repealed under President Romney.
thanks, I appreciated the comments - although I’m not sure what your tagline photo is all about.
Boy would I be delighted to see that happen!
The thing is, at this point we can’t say that what Roberts has done will doom the Republicans, or that it will stick us forever with Obamacare. As you point out, it may help do the opposite.
And he has limited the Commerce Clause, which conservatives have been seeking for a very long time. He also did create this notion of the Court not being completely partisan - gaining some political capital for the Court, perhaps that capital will be needed at a different time.
I just can’t say. I do know my libertarian Alaskan gun toting lawyer of a husband who is about as liberal as Justice Thomas, thinks Roberts may have had his reasons, and that as a nation we bear the responsibility for Obama and his crap law.
Who sounds like the liberal now? When you feel you’re losing ground, blame CONSPIRACY, that’s always a real winner.
Sorry pal, I’m a work at home mom in Alaska, who has an 8 year record of posting on FR. Before you flame people for being trolls, you should do a little research.
Sentiments understood sir.
I wouldn’t try to prevent you from feeling that way.
Ah I’m not being sarcastic either - as a veteran you have surely earned the right to hate Roberts until the end of time; you’ve paid your dues, and rightfully may feel that he blinked rather than do what could have been right for the whole country, at a time when the economy is in the crapper, and getting rid of it may have offered some reprieve.
True about the polls and the huge political bump Obama has gotten, but since many economists are saying Obamacare is like an anchor dragging down the economy; what chance of an economic bump do we have in the next 6 months now? And without that, his short term bump will sink like a stone. People vote their pocketbooks.
And yes i am a pig.....obviously
But I'm chivalrous
I don’t hate Roberts, I hate the decision that he made that what he did to the Republic doing it. If, in the end, it helps deafeat Obama, fine, but that does not excuse his decision of ignore the Constitution and go LOOKING for a reason to vote for it. Even Kennedy, Mr. Fence Sitter and usually final vote, went all in on defeating the entire mess. Roberts, like Souter, is going to turn out to be a stupid decision by the Bushies.
Sent you a pm too :)
Sorry to have jumped on you so fast. Product of too much freeping this week I suppose, lol.
