Those contemptuous epithets and more were hurled by Republicans and conservatives at Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. moments after he single-handedly saved Obamacare, joining liberals on the bench to break a 4-4 tie.
The Supreme Court has abandoned us, Texas Gov. Rick Perry declared. Simply disappointing, Florida Gov. Rick Scott moaned. Activist court, Rep. Michele Bachmann cried.
Even Ari Fleischer, the former spokesman for George W. Bush, who appointed Chief Justice Roberts to the court, joined in. I miss Justice Harriet Miers, he whined.
But they all miss the point, and, more, by looking purely at the political, miss the forest for the trees.

Still just not sure what I think today, but to demonize Roberts is both pointless and possibly off the mark.
Time will tell us if what he's done here is awful or not.
Low IQ moron. |
There, fixed it.
I’m going to give it a few days before I decide whether to be upset or not.
He voted the same as Elena Kagan, that’s all you need to know.
After rewriting ObamaCare to RobertsCare, I think it is still ZerOcare.
Instead of clarifying health care, he has made it a muddle. How does this law not become a bill of attainer?
That’s not a bad approach. I woke my poor husband up at 6:15am with “they struck it down!!” - only to sheepishly return a bit later with “no they didn’t.” At that moment I did think Roberts was as big a dog as most of the posters today...
But you have to let reason in, and ask yourself “why the hell would he have done that?” - and calling him some yellow belly communist, as some here have done, is immature and intellectually shallow. John Roberts is NOT a liberal. He may not be as conservative as some of us hoped/thought, but he has been a very solid conservative vote on the court. You can’t argue with that just because he’s not voted with Scalia 100% of the time. He’s not some social liberal either. There is an explanation out there for why he ruled as he did, we just aren’t sure of it yet.
Ah except the know it all name callers, who in fact surely must have his number already.
And for those pining away for Harriet Miers, refer to the intellectually shallow comment above.
“But Justice Roberts did just the opposite (and, bonus, also strictly adhere to the original intent of the Constitution)”
I found that passage particularly troubling. I get what the author is trying to say, but adhering to the Constitution isn’t supposed to be a “bonus”, it is supposed to be a Justice’s raison d’etre.
All that said, I do agree that the best course of action now is to make the best of the hand that has been dealt to us. The ruling breaks my heart, but it has been made. Now we take what we can use from it to defeat Obama in November.
That's 3 and 0 in one week.
Methinks I agree with Rush as what we may be witnessing is this ASSHAT beginning to work on his "Legacy" much as Warren did and so far, that does not augur well for us Cons.

Roberts' naming it a tax is just the weapon we need. The Democrats are single handedly responsible for the biggest tax increase ever; let's get the word out.
Roberts does deserve our derision and disgust. He drove a stake through the heart of our freedom.
He has provided all the democrats who voted for this bill and Obama political cover and a path to re-election.
Every democrat can run around claiming “YOU SEE, We said it wasn’t a tax. The conservative republican supreme court made it a tax. Not we democrats. The Republicans passed this tax”
And there are enough stupid people that are going to believe this.
I don’t see why the left thinks it is so wonderful except their long range goal of single payer. For now we will go with employer provided .. .. should that go away we will forgo insurance and pay the tax . . . should we get sick we’ll go buy insurance.
I wish everyone would calm down. This is the biggest rallying cry for our party since 1994, when they tried to pass healthcare reform and you remember what happened in 1994. They lied, we now can call it what it is, the largest tax increase in the history of the Country, and take the whole shebang...White House, Senate and the House. Instead of the Dems running against the conservative SCOTUS, it’s all going to be about them. Now we have to stop whining and do our job of getting people out to vote, which got much easier today. Remember why we won so much in 2010? This election is going to forever change this Country.. I am positive it is going to go our way. Let’s get to work.

Wrong. I'll happily demonize Roberts!
